True. When using a tripod, turn VR/IS off. I haven't needed a remote, yet. Doing 30sec shots or setting the timer to do star trails, has been sufficient, but since I want to explore light painting, etc. I'm gonna need a remote. I haven't used Lightroom. I've got CS6, but for quick adjustments, I just use Picasa.

It's that time of year in Illinois, the bald eagles are back in force. Ready to mingle, mate and raise their eaglets. There is a mating pair (not pictured) that I love to watch as they fish and tend to their nest. Unfortunately, a windstorm wiped it out late last spring, and I'm not entirely sure they have rebuilt in the same place. Anyway, here are my 1st photos of the season

A lot of shows added as I have had a streak of good luck (as photo passes go) here in Columbus. Just made some changes to the site as well. Some more additions to come in the Photographer section. I have also upgraded the equipment my concert setup is now Sony A77 body with a Sony Zeiss 24-70 2.8 lens. Not sure how I got by without a 2.8 lens, a world of difference, love it. Also still have the Tamron 18-200 3.5 as a backup.

I love to see new posts here. I always think, "Yay!! New shots to look at!" I haven't done much of any shooting this winter. It's been so dang cold and snowy. I'll be starting a 6 week road trip vacation heading west to Arizona at the end of March. I'll be dusting the cobwebs off my camera then
Also, I edited the OP, but thought I'd put the new link here too. I've put a few of my favorite shots on Flickr click here

My galleries from McDowell Mountain Music Festival. The lighting for Slightly Stooopid and Gramatik was HORRIBLE. But got some good shots of the rest. :-) STS9 is publishing the photos on their site and possibly Slightly Stooopid. Fun weekend.

Great pictures. I love to dabble with concert photography but without dragging my good camera to the show, I tend to get a lot of Red lights and maybe and silhouette of my favorite artist as the lights flash at me. I was at the City and Colour Concert concert and he stopped the show to tell everyone to put their cameras, smartphones and other apparatuses down and enjoy the show with your own eyes for at least one song. It was kinda cool not to see so many smartphones in the air but I admit I am guilty myself at every show!!!
Great photos, all. Love the light painting, SilentEyedStorm. That's a lot of fun.
Seeing the concert and festival photos makes me wish I had taken my DSLR to Bonnaroo, but I intentionally left it at home. I was worried -- about the camera -- but also that I would miss something because I was so busy looking for it. I just took a point & shoot to capture any moments.
Finally got to go through these. Look Great! Did very well with the bad lighting
Thanks! Have you been out to shoot anything recently?
I just got done with a local festival here in Columbus. Pretty good night of music.
What fest? Just did Rock N Roll Resort last weekend, when our review and my gallery are published I'll put it here along with the full gallery on my site. I've got Marco Benevento and Twiddle on Friday, The Word 5/1, good chance of UM Bowl and/or the record label party on 5/3 and 5/4 and Tauk with Fikus and Mun on 5/7 so its shaping up to be busy.
What other fests are you trying to shoot? I also applied for Firefly, Mountain Jam, Newport Folk, Vibes, Locken or Catskill Chill, and will apply to Phases of the Moon.
I don't expect to be approved for all so it will be a manageable amount.
Nice! Hope you get some positive responses back from your applications.
I am hoping for Bonnaroo, Forecastle, Nelsonville (here in Ohio), Dark Star Jubilee. There is a weird lack of shows right now in Columbus. But should pick up here in a month.
The festival I shot last weekend was called the Back Tax Music Festival. Just two stages, put on by a local band to benefit Parents with Autistic Children. There was a band there from Louisville called The Pass. They were really good, I expect to see more of them in the near future. I'll post the gallery links when I am finished editing.
dogtorkurt2 and roro-The downside to shooting shows and festivals is that I do only get about 75% enjoyment when shooting as opposed to just taking it in. I used to find myself taking to many shots making sure I got it right, but when my skills and confidence improved, I got better at getting what I needed then enjoyed the rest.
The upside is the press passes get me to more shows then I otherwise could afford to go to.
Other side is for really amazing sets like Tauk at Rock N Roll Resort I barely took any shots because of how well they played and I was just one with the music.
Gibran-we got the thank you for your application we will let you know from Peach, Phases, and Firefly, Mtn Jam, Vibes, and Newport Folk haven't responded. Locken we should be ok as my editor knows the people running it, and Catskil Chill having done the past 2 years we are in if we want it. Roo probably wouldn't approve us this year, but at current growth pace I think we would have a shot for next year.

I have had a different experience since starting to shoot shows. I absolutely love doing it. There are some shows I end up not going to if I do not get a photo pass. Not sour grapes, but I know if I go I will be mentally picturing things I would have wanted to capture with the camera. Then after the show I will see countless crappy cell phone pics on the bands FB and web page. :-) When I get into something I tend to go overboard, thankfully it is not very often something catches my attention like that. I think photography did because there is seemingly endless room for improvement. From camera equipment, to editing skills, to software. That is exciting to me and keeps me coming back to shoot more shows, or anything else for that matter. For me it does not dampen my concert experience it enhances it. That is just me though, I have had a lot of people tell me they would hate to have to take pictures at a concert as it would distract them from the music. I understand that, but it just doesn't do that to me.
Mike- Congrats on the vibes confirmation. I am still waiting on several.......patiently....as possible. :-)

It sucks that many fests and shows don't let you know until right before. Which did you apply to?
The lower enjoyment is only for the time I shoot. I am trying hard to stop shooting after I know I have plenty of good shots but I often start up again when I see something happening or about to. I don't seem to have the problem of seeing only crappy shots from shows I might miss as we are surrounded by many very talented photogs in this area so there are no shortage of great pics.
I agree on going overboard, I have a $10k wish list of gear that I feel I need to take my work to the next level, and I just recently started using HDR on occasion so I don't get left behind.
Well, I have actually has conversations with the folks from Nelsonville (festival here in Ohio) I think I good there. I am supposed to contact the rep from Dark Star Jubilee on the 1st. I should not have any worries there either. The two that take forever are Bonnaroo and Forecastle. Those requests were submitted by an editor on my behalf because site information is required. They take forever to send out notifications. I am going to both either way, but I hate the thought of not being able to shoot. So fingers crossed.
Buddy, I know exactly what you mean about "trying to stop shooting when you think you have enough good shots" I am sooo guilty of that.
I think I am realistic but my girlfriend would say otherwise. I am about to buy a 70-200 lens and a fisheye...not cheap. I keep telling her "This is what I need and I will be set for a long while" but then something else always comes up....that I NEED! :-) Oh, HDR....I have dabbled with it. I hate it. But it is trendy so I to will submit one or two. Do not want people to think I am not with the time. haha

I have a 35mm fisheye and it's nice but not worth the money. When you get one shortly after you will find that you start to use it less and less. What appature is the 200 your about to get?

I have 3 lenses in my bag, a Tamron 70-300, Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 28-75. My favorite lens is the Tokina. I absolutely love it. It's on my camera 80% of the time.

I am about to get the Sony G SSM II it is a 2.8, test drove it at my last festival. I shoot with Sony so everything is a little more expensive but I have been pleased with the quality. Upon further consultation I may not go with a fisheye but maybe with a 14-24 2.8 to fill the wide angle department.
So my bag will be: Sony 24-70 2.8, Sony 70-200 2.8, and a Sony 14-24 2.8 or lower. That should cover it.

The Nikon fisheye I want that I rented for last year's Rock N Roll Resort is only $650, but the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 are both give or take $2k so I'll probably get a 50 1.8, the fisheye and rent when I need something better for low light then my current Tamron 18-270 all in one.
Also I just applied to be a staff photog for Mountain Jam, wish me luck as I'll need plenty of it!

I use a Nikon and you can get a rokinon fisheye for the Nikon dslrs for like 350 and they're just as good as a canon or Nikon. If your hell bent on getting a fisheye look into those
