Higher education/culture is the one thing we actually do have. 4 colleges within city limits, and the Springfield Armory History Site & Quadrangle museums. Mind you, they are surrounded by stunning poverty and infrastructure entropy, but they're there. This isn't the city it was when Dr. Suess lived here, little known fact the cityscapes and factory backdrops of his books are based on what he saw growing up here.
Keep in mind, I know Worcester far better than I do Springfield.
And speaking of armory museums, just went to Higgins for the first/last time yesterday.
I'm guessing any visit to "Springfield" is: - Basketball Hall of Fame - Ingleside Mall - Six Flags and/or The Big E - some nice suburb like Longmeadow (wait, which suburb is the real good one?)
And just totally overlooking the high crime rate, outrageous amounts of poverty, near total absence of cultural anything or higher education, and just all around shiztiness that makes Worcester look like Providence in comparison.

HA! Where I live in the Silver City of Saint Paul, MN, I have at least four institutes of higher learning within a mile of my current stomping grounds plus we have stunning poverty and infrastructure entropy.
Sorry, more. We also have fabulous wealth. I'm not sh*tting you, I live equidistant from the Governor's Mansion and a well known crack den. Yet I can walk down the street and feel relatively safe. Life is weird.
Forget the worst cities. Worst state would have to be West Virginia. I love it though for better or worse. Its where I was born and raised. I travel all across the country for my job and I've been lucky to travel out of the country many times as well but WV is just an all around depressing place to be and it gets worse by the day. Its good to be able to go home from time to time but every time I go back home a little piece of me dies when I see how downtrodden it has become. It really sucks man. I love WV dont get me wrong but its just too depressing man.
I've been all over the world. People make the city.
I have been all over the world, as well. Saying Springfield, Mass. is one of the greatest cities in the world is an insane thing to say.
You're right. I was drunk last night. If you think your city sucks and you refuse to contribute anything positive to the place and also refuse to leave, well, you're the reason the city sucks. I live in Toronto. It's a great city, but it has it's problems... mostly the citizens referring to it as the "greatest city in the world" right before they throw their Tim Hortons cup on the ground.

Not everyone has the means to just up and leave, even if they hate where they live.

I'm from a small town in Georgia called Ringgold and it's about 15 minutes south of Chattanooga and this show is filmed in my town. If any of you haven't seen this show, it's a complete waste of time. I've met these people multiple times as they have been hired quite a bit to be security at parties. I've tried and tried to get my picture taken with them but I'm refused every time. They are just as goofy and trashy as the show.

Ahh yes, saw a commercial for this show once. I have a feeling that this was never explained:
I am finally making the thread, bonzai. Be excited.
I love Knoxville even though she disappoints me on the regular. I am sure I am not the only one who gets let down by their city. For today, it's blatant public racism.

Oh yeah, Joan is retarded. They are the biggest joke of a security company, but hey you don't need much intelligence to live in this backwoods, redneck infested little piece of land. Population of 3500.

It's not easy to sell a house that is worth half what you paid for it 10 years ago. I'd love to move more than you know. I fought against it for 2 years but were also getting a casino now, so assume all you want about people who don't like their cities, but I'm the one stuck here.
I am trying to come up with something bad about Nashville. I do wish we could get shorter lines at the Pancake Pantry I guess.
Although I love the Pancake a Pantry, the food in general sucks in Nashville and Tennessee as a whole. Of course there are some hidden gems throughout the state but unless you like fried greasy food, Tennessee has some bad cuisine.
Overall I do like Nashville, it's a pretty clean city. It's just so damn small, downtown is tiny and pretty boring. I guess maybe I'm spoiled growing up in Chicago.

Have you seen/heard this video? I learned about it from some podcast that made fun of it but it's insane people think this way:

Uh oh, you're about to start a war. You may need some suggestions on where to eat next time you come to town. We have FANTASTIC food, if you know where to go.
And yes, downtown is small. And yes, it can be boring. But that's why locals don't hang out down there

The one redeeming quality that WV has is once you get toward the bottom of the state, its pretty to drive through. Yes I said drive through, you dont stop (unless at the New River Gorge). And you don't stop because, well, Deliverance.

John Ragan is actually my state rep. Stacey Campfield makes more headlines, but Ragan is a way bigger tool. Last year, he was up for reelection for the first time. He and his opponent were outside the polling place saying hi to people and such in the parking lot. What was Ragan reading during down moments? The Bible, of course. I am all for people reading it, but it just reeked of pandering. Also, he is the dick who basically wanted to make it legal for LGBT kids fo get harassed at school as long as the person harassing them was doing it as an expression of their religious beliefs. Seriously. I am not joking or exaggerating.

You are kind of insane, we might not have the cuisine you get in Chicago or NYC, but we have some seriously top notch places to eat. Husk, Rolf and Daughters, Catbird Seat etc... will all stack up pretty well against most towns our size.

I actually lived all over Tennessee, Lebanon(east of Nashville), Joelton(northwest of Nashville), and Bartlett(northeast of Memphis) for a total of seven years and have a lot of family that have lived there for 30+ years. I've dated a decent amount of girls and had plenty of co-workers to show me around and suggest restaurants, most of which wasn't very good. Memphis is decent with good barbecue but that's about it. I've tried a lot of pizza places and they all suck, same with Chinese. I found a good Italian place in west end, Valentinos, and a Tapas place that's no longer there called "the mirror". Morton's steakhouse is decent for a high end steakhouse chain.
Not trying to start a war but I wasn't impressed with the food in Tennessee. I've traveled to a lot of states and Tennessee ranks near the bottom for food.
Maybe somebody can enlighten me on where the restaurants are that have above average food.

Thanks for the info, I'll look those places up when I'm visiting next summer after Roo.

Next time you head to Nashville, let us know and we'll shower you with good food suggestions The food scene has picked up over the past few years so things may have improved since your last visit.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Every year that I go back down there my wife and I have a tough time finding places to eat so any suggestion is a good suggestion, imo.

Not many places more scenic with natural beauty than WV in the fall. I love seeing all the colors on the mountains from the leaves. Sadly you are correct about the drive through part. Im actually from southern WV, Princeton to be exact. I can be at the gorge in about 45 minutes. and the Deliverance thing. See that really bothers me. As I said prior, I travel all across the country for work and that seems to be a reoccuring theme. I absolutely despise the stereotypes. I guess every state has them but it seems like WV gets it the worst out of anyone. Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi can relate too I guess, I hear those often as well. But in reality WVians are really some of the most down to earth, hardest working, nicest people. Maybe I'm biased since im from there but whatever. Coal is pretty much the only thing the people in that state have. It drives so many businesses, small and large, its ridiculous and as coal slowly gets pushed out the state is left with next to nothing to turn to.
Oh yeah and one more thing....Eat Shit Pitt couldnt resist when I saw you were from Pittsburgh.
