Can we just sterilize everyone who supports flying this pathetic and disgusting symbol of "Southern pride"?
Seems harsh, maybe we should educate them on why others see this as a symbol of hate and racism. I know a lot of good people who take pride in being from the south. I am proud to say I am from the south. I know many people, good people, who carry the confederate flag; it is their way of showing that pride and they are not filled with hate, nor racism. I just do not think they fully understand what it represents to others and the hate that it carries. Even Hollywood got it wrong for decades. The Dukes of Hazard were good ole boys, did you ever see or hear of anything that would link either Bo or Luke Duke to being a racist or hate filled? No. It is a "Rebel" Flag and many just see it as that. A southern rebel. Now, according to the majority, it is filled with hate and racism and slavery and should not be flown at government buildings and if you chose to fly this flag, then you chose to accept every thing it represents. Marion county should be smart enough to know this, so maybe we could just keep the sterilization to their seats.

Oh, I mostly agree with you everything you've said. It's just frustrating how many people either can't comprehend or choose to ignore the fact that the Confederate flag is inherently tied to racism, White supremacy, and slavery. Like you suggested, people need to be educated about the flag's origin and true meaning. Unfortunately, there is also a sizable segment of the population who couldn't care less that it's a symbol of racism. Regarding the "Southern pride" comment, I apologize if that appeared to be a dig at the entire South. What I meant to say is that there are many better/more appropriate symbols to demonstrate one's pride in their Southern heritage than the Confederate flag.

Agreed! Personally, you comment did come off with a hint of negativity and i wanted to change that, I understand what you were trying to say and do not get me wrong, we have some idiots down here. Some who, no matter what will always fly the flag and hide under the umbrella of heritage. I have been suggesting the Bonnie Blue as a flag for a substitute.
This Sam DuBose case is really encouraging Cincinnati's finest to speak their minds.
It's amazing how these kinds of events bring the racists/white supremacists out of hiding. Some people will literally go the ends of the earth to defend the shooting of an innocent black person. I just don't understand.

I wondered how long it would be before TN jumped into the national spotlight on this issue. So embarrassing. How in the hell do the proponents of these bills intend on enforcing these ridiculous laws? geesh

Sadly, even though TN is also considering one of these ridiculous bathroom bills, that article is about a law recently passed in TN that is even worse, in my opinion. The hateful and ignorant podunk TN state legislators recently passed a bill allowing therapists and mental health counselors to decline treatment to patients whose behavior conflicts with their "sincerely held religious beliefs." The only hope is that Gov. Haslam will let common sense prevail and veto these bills.
EDIT: I think Haslam might actually pull out the veto for the sake of state business interests. It's unfortunate if that is his only justification, but it's still preferable to the pure hate spewed by the legislators.

Thank you for the clarification. I just assumed it had something to do with the "bathroom bill." You're right. If he does veto, which he should if these ignoramuses pass these bills, it would only be with lost income/businesses in mind.

Unless I'm reading it wrong this covers community based services that receive government grants. So a low-income gay person with mental healh/ substance abuse problems could be turned downed by individual providers that are funded by the state. In my town, these places are the only real option I'm aware of. This bill absolutely alienates people from what could be their only lifeline in their community, besides going to an emergency room.
I doubt it would happen a lot, as most health care workers aren't assholes or could give the case to someone else at their office. Still, fuck the people that voted for this.

I admittedly have not read the bill. I probably should, but do not really want to at the moment. I have only read news stories on it, and those stories state that this bill is a little more broad than that. The stories I have read claim that this law protects all therapists and counselors from civil lawsuits and criminal action if they deny services to clients whose religious beliefs conflict with their own. It essentially creates an immunity where one did not exist before.
If these therapists and counselors have views that are so warped that they would deny treatment to individuals based on their lifestyles, then they are probably pretty terrible therapists and counselors anyway, but the concept of medical providers denying medical treatment based on personal beliefs is a horrible precedent.
EDIT: Here is the language of the Bill. The counselor or therapist must refer the patient in those circumstances, but the horrible precedent I mentioned above remains.
HOUSE BILL 1840
(a) No counselor or therapist providing counseling or therapy services shall be required to counsel or serve a client as to goals, outcomes, or behaviors that conflict with a sincerely held religious belief of the counselor or therapist; provided, that the counselor or therapist coordinates a referral of the client to another counselor or therapist who will provide the counseling or therapy.
(b) The refusal to provide counseling or therapy services as described in subsection (a) shall not be the basis for:
(1) A civil cause of action;
(2) Criminal prosecution; or
(3) Any other action by this state or a political subdivision of this state to penalize or withhold benefits or privileges, including tax exemptions or governmental contracts, grants, or licenses.
(c) For purposes of this section, "counseling or therapy services": (1) Means assisting an individual, through the counseling relationship, in a manner intended to facilitate normal human growth and development, using a combination of mental health and human development principles, methods, and techniques, to achieve mental, emotional, physical, social, moral, educational, spiritual, or career development and adjustment throughout the life span; and
(2) Includes services described in subdivision (c)(1) provided by any person, whether or not such person is licensed, registered, or otherwise regulated by this state.

No, it's certainly that broad. I was just focusing in on the state funding part because my initial assumption was this was for private practices. I love the wording, which makes it all about the client's "goals." So basically, it covers the therapist's ass because they can just give some vague justification and make it like they are doing both parties a favor.
this is not a WTF is "wrong", more of a "right", it is good to see these quacks being held accountable. This was last month. 4 Marion County Deputies sentenced
So a local police officer was gunned down while on duty last night, in a town about 20 minutes from where I'm originally from. Such a sad and senseless event.
The suspect was later shot and killed in a shootout with police in a neighboring town. In that exchange, a Massachusetts state police trooper was shot in the shoulder but thankfully he'll be fine.
spent most of yesterday evening glued to twitter, r/memphis, and the MPD helicopter tracker. had the whole city on edge. Dude just went on a rampage shooting people, carjacking people, livestreaming it on facebook. 4 dead, 3 wounded.
earlier this week a woman was kidnapped and murdered while out on an early morning run too, and another kidnapping in broad daylight at a target. been a rough week here.
