I don't even know if this is a bad thing, but it seemed to fit this thread the best. Last night, Lake City, which is the next town over from me, voted to officially change the name of the city to Rocky Top. At one point, it seems goofy. At another, Lake City is one of the innumerable small towns that is dying a slow death, and the name change is an effort to change their fortunes due to it being attached to a deal with a developer who plans to build a large hotel/tourist attraction in the city. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out for them.

The pilot is an excellent tourist attraction already. Rocky Top is on the up and up !!!

Just from a geological perspective, it seems brazen to claim to be a Lake Town and a Rocky Top. What's next? Rocky Top Island?
haha roro that was kinda my first thought. Dave Maynar is it on a mountain lake? I just find the two town names conflicting as most bodies of water are at lower elevations.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I hate all of you.
It is the nearest town to Norris Lake. Rocky Top is a reference to the greatest fight song in all of college sports.

Being the terrible Tennessean I am (technically, I'm from Kentucky anyway), I never really paid any attention to the lyrics of Rocky Top. Did the two strangers who went looking for the moonshine still and never came back get killed on Rocky Top, or did they just like it so much that they stayed?

Rocky Top is the best fight song in college sports.
This is coming from a midwestern Catholic who has been a Notre Dame fan since birth.
I never really thought about the lyrics, but after some deliberation I would say that the strangers "more than likely city folk" probably died on Rocky Top? I don't know, I'm not from Tennessee.

C'mon.
As an ND fan, even I think "Hail to the Victors" is better than Rocky Top. Rocky top is in the top 10 but #1???
you would be a minority, of the ND fans I have met. Went to a UT/ND game in South Bend, and was walking around campus friday night singing rocky top trying to stir up trouble. students started singing it with me, and told me it was a staple at the karaoke nights at the bars. Apparently it is (was?) a really, really popular song in South Bend. and not ironically.

There needed to be a Rocky Top, Tennessee, period. I remember being at Neyland Stadium while that was being sung.....wow. I hope it works well for the town.
EDIT: I saw Shakey Graves at a small venue in Scottsdale, AZ, his encore was "Rocky Top", played with no mics and from the middle of the dance floor. Even the Canadians next to me knew some of the words. It was a giant sing a long. I felt like I was back in TN at a bar somewhere in Nashville on a Saturday afternoon.

Yeahh.. even if I cared about college football (outside of the occasion UConn game), how would one know the name of your song? I don't think UConn's even has a name outside of "UConn Fight Song." Or if there is, we never used it. And I went to A LOT of basketball and football games when I was there.
And I do know that lakes at high elevations exist, Tahoe is at over 6,000 feet.

I would think Lake Tahoe would also fit this definition. Or Lake Lure, even.
I already mentioned Tahoe. GEEZZZZZ Never heard of Lure, but I googled it and it seems to be about 900 feet above sea level. A big local lake near me is 470 feet above sea level and central CT is not exactly in the mountains. I don't know what the cutoff is, but Lure is not that much higher.

Ohio, as a state, failed to get enough signatures to get medicinal marijuana on the November ballot. Franklin county, Columbus, was one of the counties who fell short.... Yet, the majority of Ohians are for medicinal marijuana. Seriously? How does that happen?! Ugh. Fucking Ohio. I guess signatures can start again in one year.
In case you weren't counting 82 shootings in 4 days.
I thought of you when I heard this, and I worried about you.
I was actually in DC. The thing about Chicago is that it's extremely segregated. I live on the predominantly affluent/white North Side. From what I saw in the addresses there, only about 4 of the shootings were in that area of the city. That essentially means that 95% of the shootings were South/West, which is normal.
For reference area 32 is the heart of downtown. 26 and 27 are the West side area on the edge of Chicago before like Oak Park/River Forest areas. 37,67,68 are near south side the White Sox play in 34 and the cubs play in Lakeview which is 6. Both areas are the heart of the North/South side. Shows the discrepancy between the two areas quite well.

Ah, we've made The Daily Show. This time for something a little more serious than when we were on Colbert for the strip joint that didn't want to pay taxes.
This is a win for Knoxville. An elderly viewer writes a local meteorologist to tell her that she needs to stop wearing dresses that fit snugly under her bust. She tells him/her to fuck off (in a nice way).
Reading that on your facebook page made me so angry. And so sad for the couple, the guests, this world we have to live in. What the fuck is wrong with people???
Some kids put a dresser in my old high school's courtyard and wrote racial slurs and a threatening message on it, then called in a bomb threat. Only in Florida
