Fun Fact: If you curated a lineup consisting of every band that people suggest will play Shaky Knees instead of Bonnaroo, you would unequivocally have the best lineup in music festival history.
Well, over the past few years we have seen multiple gems who are undercard acts get snagged by SK instead of playing Bonnaroo.
Oh, I agree that Shaky Knees has absolutely been a thorn in Bonnaroo's side when it comes to booking the undercard. But this idea that every alternative/indie act that's worth a damn is going to be gobbled up by Shaky Knees is ridiculous.

....I mean it happened in 2016 and a lesser extent in 2015.
2015 Roo Indie/Alternative Bookings: Alabama Shakes (do they count?), UMO, MMJ, Spoon, War on Drugs, Against Me, Mac DeMarco, Growlers, Iceage, Temples, Strand of Oaks
2015 Shaky Knees: Strokes, Ryan Adams, Social Distortion, Noel Gallagher, Tame Impala, Brand New, Interpol, TVOTR, Manchester Orchestra, DFA1979, Dr. Dog, Spiritualized, American Football, Black Lips, Best Coast, Frank Turner, Real Estate, Built To Spill, Mac DeMarco, Minus The Bear, Fidlar, Metz, Two Gallants, Speedy Ortiz, Palma Violets, Surfer Blood, Jukebox the Ghost, Viet Cong
2016 Roo: Tame Impala, Death Cab, Band of Horses, FJM, Kurt Vile, Lord Huron, Clutch?, Fidlar, Dungen, Twin Peaks, Bully, Givers, Waxahatchee
2016 Shaky: MMJ, ATDI, Deftones, Decemberists, Young The Giant, Head and the Heart, Foals, Silversun, Bloc Party, The Kills, Cold War Kids, Phosphorescent, Black Angels, Savages, Against Me, Frightened Rabbit, Parquet Courts, Wild Nothing, Front Bottoms, Brian Fallon, UMO, The Dear Hunter, The Vaccines, The Orwells, Strand of Oaks, Hop Along, Foxing, Julien Baker, Ought, Nothing
It's pretty obvious that SK is taking up a majority of the good acts that fall into that category now. Roo is still getting a few, but SK is wrecking them on a genre that usually has pretty wide appeal. Considering that SK/Beats is on an upswing and Roo is on a downswing, it's hard to argue against the trend only getting worse for Roo, especially now that Beats is gonna start stealing the less crappy electronic music too.

It was more obvious in 2015, but your 2016 list for Shaky Knees includes some pretty mediocre stuff (Young the Giant, Head and the Heart, Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, The Vaccines, The Orwells). Also, several of the artists on that list played Bonnaroo in 2015, so including them doesn't make much sense.

But you're comparing Bonnaroo to a festival that pretty much exclusively books that kind of music. Again, I'm not saying there's no impact, because there clearly is. But obviously an indie rock fest is going to book more indie rock than a multi-genre fest. There are also other factors that you may not be taking into account.

The point I was trying to make is that indie rock, while not Roo's exclusive genre pool, is probably one of the biggest draws for its target demographic, especially given the saturation of electronic music festivals around the east coast. Roo will get some legacy acts, a handful of rappers, some synth pop, some bluegrass, maybe some pop, and some up and comers. Traditionally though, the middle of the lineup has been bolstered by those kind of acts that SK is getting their hands on.
Shaky Beats also has the potential to rip out a lot of the electronic representation of the past: acts like Four Tet, Classixx, SBTRKT, Flying Lotus and Big Gigantic aren't locks in the way I would have previously considered them if they were planning on doing a US festival summer run.
My argument is that focusing in on one genre, those two festivals are going to pay more attention to the quality of acts, given they need to get the best of the bunch to draw a crowd, as there's little diversity. In doing so, that's going to potentially start leaving Roo with fewer options for what I'd argue are their two most important target genres. I'm sure there are plenty of other factors in the mix, but I think SK would bank a lot harder on getting Fleet Foxes considering they hit their target demo perfectly and would draw a ton of people from Atlanta alone.
