I'm 19. Is there any hope of me being able to rent a car? I know must companies say you have to be at least 25, and others 21. Are there any that do 18 and up?
It'll be a tough sell to get a rental if you're 19 man.
You could have someone of age rent it and break the rules a bit. The rough part is, if you get in an accident or damage the vehicle, and the company finds out you were driving, it could be big trouble. Not to mention that your insurance company might not cover you if you're in violation of a signed rental agreement.
I used to rent cars/vans to go to festivals all the time when I was under 21, and never lied about my age. The way to do it is to hit up the yellow pages - there are numerous "mom and pop" car rental places out there. Have you ever noticed that the cars that Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc. rent are always about 1 year old and never have more than 10K miles on them? There is constant overturn by these companies, but due to title requirements, once they've been rented, they are tagged as "rental" cars, thus making them very difficult to sell on the open (consumer) market. The mega car companies sell these cars to the smaller, local rental companies, who then rent them to you for lower costs. True, the level of customer service is less and sometimes the cars are kind of shady. However, they are generally willing to rent to a driver as long as they are over 18. Some of them will charge a fee, but I was usually able to talk them out of it - bargaining is definitely an option. The rental costs are generally less than the big guys charge as well.

Suburban?? Damn sounds like an expensive option... Greyhound is my friend, but i love backpacking so it works out... I would be pretty suprised if you could rent a car at 19...
I used to ride Greyhound all the time to go see my girlfriend when she was in school. The things I hated about Greyhound is getting the chatty person sitting next to you while you are trying to sleep, and everytime I did an overnight Greyhound trip there would always be a baby on the bus. Thinking about it sort of makes me nostalgic for the ol Greyhound days though.
i am renting a car too...is it pretty expensive to insure the car, i dont have an insurance policy of my own, so i would have to use the rental agencies

at Enterprise, it's like $15 per day for "partial coverage"....I'm guessing this means that they cover your deductible if you have insurance. I'm not sure what it is for the full insurance. I'm thinking $25-30, but that's really a guess.
so we want a Suburban. or the GMC twin version, but we went to to rental places yesterday, the bgger ones, and they said they couldnt guaruntee a Suburban!?!?!?! What!?!?! they cant make sure they ahve a suburban ready for me in two months? thats booty
Time magazine ran an aricle suggestion good ways to travel... go to www.bnm.com to look for cheapest rental car. Then check prices compared with hotwire.com THEN, go to priceline.com to bid for steeper discounts
