Here's where I stand on Modest Mouse: pre-Good News, I love everything... I like some of Good News, but practically nothing after. I never got to see them during when I would have been most into them (just after M&A), but I did get fortunate enough to see them in 09 on a very good night, Johnny Marr-free so the setlist was mostly Good News and before. I passed on seeing them multiple times before that because of word of mouth on their shows being either hit or miss, leaning more toward miss at the time... this show I went to was a last minute decision, deciding to get tickets and go the day of. The energy and performance was tops, Isaac was in a great mood, and it was just an over all very memorable show (I think A$AP Rosko was at this one, too, actually). I always said after that I'd go see them again, if they were close and for cheap enough.
But, I haven't kept up with what they've been doing since 2009, so I don't know what setlists have been like, their live reputation, or anything. If they happen to play the same day as Violent Femmes at Shaky Knees, you bet your ass I'm there.
Was this the one at the Disco Rodeo (now known as The Ritz)? The one that was so absurdly hot that Isaac Brock had to take a half-hour to come out for the encore just to dry himself off because he was drenched in sweat? If so, I, too, loved that freaking show a lot. That show ended up being mentioned in Rolling Stone accompanied with a picture of Brock drenched in sweat.

That was the show. I hate that they changed the name to The Ritz. Disco Rodeo has always been one of my favorite places to see a show.
My first concert ever was Modest Mouse in a gym in Louisville, Ky in 2006. Beyond them being one of my mainstay favorite bands, I thought the set went off pretty well. The air conditioning stopped in the middle of summer, which made it pretty unbearable. Did I mention it was a gym? But they still played the whole time and threw water bottles into the crowd to relieve us. At the time I was so pissed I missed Bonnaroo 2005 because they were there.
I caught them in Louisville the year after in a really small bar... one of their best of the 6 shows I've seen over the years. I'm hoping that if they aren't on Bonnaroo's lineup they will at least be booked for Forecastle, they haven't been back to KY in years.
I've caught 2 of the unhappy Isaac shows - One at Outside Lands playing in the afternoon to a small crowd with a short set time and once at Bogarts in Cincinnati where he openly bitched about the no smoking policy. The bad shows aren't that bad, just in comparison to what they can bring on a good night.
A LN Roo slot would be a dream come true.... I''m afraid the odds aren't very good though.
