First I dont know where this post should belong so please move it if needed.
I got in a discussion with my wife the other day about Mumford and Sons having to pull out of last years Bonnaroo. One of the questions we could not answer is how much was Mumford promised to play their show? Macca was said to get 5 million. When booking these types of shows I am sure some of the money is given up front so I assume Mumford had to some money back. Then that brings me to Jack how much was he paid and did he negotiate much with them or just play the show and figure it out later?

Sorry this is very rambling.
To get an actual answer in here, nobody really knows.
Ok. Back to how Jack Johnson got paid in banana pancakes.
No one in here has a clue as to how bands are booked? Bananas do sound great right now but for some reason not that great in the TN heat.
Most of us don't know how much bands are actually paid, and those that do aren't allowed to say. A lot of the info you see in the press about this stuff falls somewhere on the spectrum between educated guesswork and straight up wrong.

I'm not sure how much they were paid. From my understanding, Jack Johnson pretty much did it just because, probably for far less then his normal take, especially considering they didn't have any merchandise with his name on it. If they did, it was limited and I didn't see it.
I think Mumford kept their withdrawal secret as to keep some of their money, if not all. 2 weeks before Bonnaroo they were telling people they were going to try and make it. Dude had a brain blood clot. No way he was going to make it. Friends in the medical field have confirmed that assumption for me in later talks. They knew they weren't coming, but probably kept speculation going to keep ticket sales up.
I wasn't there to see Mumford anyway, but I never like seeing people mislead.

Wasn't he fine like a week later? I mean sometimes you try your hardest and shit just happens anyway.

I think it was another couple of weeks later.
It just would have gone over better if they said " We'll try and make Bonnaroo, but we just don't know at this time." Instead they said they were still planning on playing.
This was discussed before. I feel sympathy for the illness, but if there is a chance you won't make it, be honest with your fans. They never said that, until the festival had started. Again, I feel like that was more about ticket sales, jmo
I also thought they could have found a bass stand in. Just for the one show. If their brother was recovering, and it seems as he was.

It was just few days before Bonnaroo, at that point most people are locked into going or not I doubt it made much of a difference but that is just me. I would not have been to their show anyway so I don't really care.
Mumford would definitely have been paid in full, by the time they canceled, but if you think they were somehow able to keep it, you are a very silly person.

You've been talking about this Mumford thing since it happened, and you have yet to make any sort of coherent points. I will flat out guarantee that there was no way that the timing of their cancellation had any impact on whether or not they could keep the money they were promised. I would assume that there is some sort of fairly nominal booking fee, which works like a deposit, which they could keep no matter what. Those are usually built in so as to give the bands some protection in the event that the festival cancels, or so that the fest doesn't say "eh, we found someone else to headline, so pound sand, asshole," leaving that band with a hole in their schedule. Next, the primary potion of the fee was likely to be payable upon performance of the contract, i.e. the performance of a headlining set at Bonnaroo. There is no way that they would get to keep that, nor any way that they and their management were stupid enough to say "gee, maybe if we lie to people and act like we'll play, they'll give us more monies!!!"
So as we've ruled that out, you're basically saying that they knew they were going to cancel, yet lied to...what? Be dicks about it? Play a funny joke on people? There's really no explanation that makes sense other than "they thought they could play, but dude's medical condition didn't improve as rapidly as expected, so they had to bow out at the last minute."
I didn't rehash this, but I thought I'd add my opinion.

I do not claim to be a marriage specialist, but I think the proper answer here would be to tell you wife, "Honey, you are right."

I suspect it was to keep ticket sales up.
Ticket sales for who. Bonnaroo? You think that AC/Superfly KNEW that Mumford wasn't going to play, and that they just played along to dupe the guileless public? This is quite the conspiracy. Just out of curiosity, in the, oh, two weeks between dude's brain clot and the actual festival, how many tickets do you think people bought because they thought Mumford was there? And how many tickets do you think they actually sold in those two weeks, regardless? Finally, if Bonnaroo knew, wouldn't the best course of action be to start looking up replacement headliners in advance, so that they could say "hey, Mumford can't make it next week, but Jack White agreed to do us a favor," or whatever, rather than having their options narrowed to Hootie or Jack Johnson, who luckily happened to be in town? And if they did announce that Mumford was out, it's not as if those people who bought tickets already for the sole reason to see M&S could return them.
Yes, for bonnaroo. I can't count the number of times I heard, "Mumford was the only band I wanted to see. I just bought tickets last week"

I believe many would not have come
Ted Dwane was hospitalized on 6/10. This didn't make the news till 6/11. Bonnaroo stopped selling GA tickets on 6/12.
