Anyone else going?
I plan on making it every year. It looks like I will be staying at my friends place off 7th st a couple blocks from I-35.
No clue what to see yet, but I plan on making sure to get the Hype Hotel RSVP. Last year they had one of the best setups for a temporary venue.
It does get more and more corporate every year, but sxsw can be accomplished for super cheap and there are 2000+ bands playing. No other festival comes close to the scale of it.

I'm not making it this year, unless it's only for a couple of days of free shows on the weekend. Last year was one of my favorite musical experiences ever. I suggest anyone that is able check it out at least once.

Downtown is where it is at. Shows take place in the clubs, cathedrals, restaurants, parks, bicycle shops, riverboats, and anywhere else you can stick a band. I recently found a hostel, Drifter Jacks, that has awesome management and there is pretty much a party going on all the time in the community room and kitchen. Wherever you stay, book soon. Last year I found a nice little apartment close to the university to rent during the week from airbnb.

Ya, I'm probably going to end up using airbnb, love that website. The SXSW site is kind of confusing, what dates would I want to be there for the best music, the first weekend or second? Sorry for all the questions, I usually plan these kinda things months in advance so I'm scrambling.

I haven't checked the dates. First week is normally for film and the second week is for music. The last Sunday is usually dead but I did stumble into the fantastic Alejandro Escovedo and Friends show at the Continental Club on the final day of the weekend last year.
I'll be there but as usual I have no idea where I'm going (typically don't until the day of). I don't think I would make a cross country trip for south by. Unless I were planning on dropping eleventy thousand on one of the wristbands. It's easy for us locals to be cheap and just rsvp.

That's a good point. There are still great options for non wristband holders, it just usually requires waiting in line longer. The free shows at places like Auditorium Shores, Waterloo Records, and the KEXP showcase at Mellow Johnny's shouldn't be tough to get into. If you elect to get a wristband and plan on paying to stay somewhere for the week it would probably run you about $1500 if you find a place reasonably priced. The value on your dollar would be much greater than a VIP option for a typical fest.

Yeah those are the free shows I usually hit up, Fuzzy. I would just hate for someone to make the trip not knowing how random/confusing a day at SXSW can be.
The ones you listed are definitely a good start. Plus you can pay cheap covers most nights for smaller showcases. It's kind of like a festival scavenger hunt.

I studied the schedule and had second and third plans for what shows to see at any given time. I didn't feel like waiting all night in line at The Mohawk for Ghostface and the Stooges so I walked a block to Holy Mountain and caught Follakzoid and the Holy Drug Couple with about 30 other people and between sets I checked out Andy Stott at Elysium down the street. Seeing artist like Flume play in a small club or Rhye play a pool hall is great. Then when their show is over I could walk across the street and see Steve Earle at the Parish. Heck, even hearing the crowd heckle the lead guy from Foxygen and seeing him throw a fit was enjoyable. It is best to be informed before going. I'll be glad to answer any questions Katy or anyone else may have. I also think I could have a good time just wandering around and letting my ears lead me.

I agree that SXSW can be totally overwelming for a first timer, but I think the options it presents are so vast that its impossible to not have a good time and enjoy yourself, unless you hate crowds. Every year it gets more corporate to the level where its like walking around in a commercial. But that commercial is filled with bands everywhere along with tons of free booze.
Fader Fort is the hardest RSVP to get, and can be amazing, but last years line-up was lackluster. Hype Hotel was where I saw the most day shows last year. Both of them have endless free booze if you don't mind miller, budweiser or some small selection of flavored vodka or whiskey (maple whiskey is gross). I caught Chvrches, Flume, !!!, Polyphonic Spree, St. Lucia, MØ, Disclosure, Austra and a few other bands all for free at Hype Hotel last year. The Vans party had Alt-J and Toro Y Moi for free also which was awesome. The Flaming Lips and Jim James show was good also and free at Auditorium Shores. I usually don't want to walk to Waterloo, but they have good shows, but it can get packed.
On another note, SXSW is the only music festival where its feasible to ride a bike around. The venues can be far apart so it can take 20 minutes to walk 20 blocks or 4-5 minutes on a bike. If possible I highly recommend it even after having my bike stolen one year. I just bought a cheap $35 pawn shop bmx bike to cruise around on. 3 days on a bike will wear you out, and it is city streets, so comfy shoes are a must.
That's just a few things to note. Staying with a friend in Austin is my recommendation if you have one, I luck out since my friend lives on 7th street 4 blocks or so from I-35. I plan on parking Wednesday and not moving my car until Sunday unless I need to get food.
Also, I live off food trucks during sxsw, they are everywhere and there are tons of options and that is usually the most money i spend during the fest.
I recommend getting there as early as possible like Monday the 11th or Tuesday to get your bearings and wristbands if needed early. Wednesday kicks in hard and it only gets busier from there with Spring Break and St. Patty's the same week.
There is so much to see and do during sxsw, it is overwhelming, but it is the ultimate make your own adventure music festival. You won't see everything you want, or be able to get in to every show, but there is always something to do. I have been going since 2008 and have never had a wristband or badge and haven't needed one. It would be nice though to have. especially if you can get a wristband early in the week.
Warpaint is supposed to play at sxsw. I hope to catch them, but odds are high it could be one of the hard to get into shows and that is how it goes at sxsw. Hopefully ausitorium shores and not Stubbs. You can still hangout outside of Stubb's if its a band you really want to see. I listened to the end of Fiona's set that way.
So I went to SxSW last year (and I presume I totally did it wrong.) But, one of my favorite things from my couple days in Austin was going over to the Spotify House. It was the only day party I spent significant amounts of time at.
Though it looks like it's not at that coffee shop like it was last year.

The itunes festival was announced for sxsw taking over ACL live for the evenings with Coldplay and a bunch of other bands I don't care about and wish weren't at sxsw. That is the biggest issue with sxsw nowadays, corporate flair. The doritos stage is the epitome of it, but I don't worry about it and keep walking by those places.
THe spotify house rsvp is up and will have phantogram at some point. Phantogram is also playing one of the shows at the Mohawk which usually has awesome day shows. Just get there early if you want to go to one of the shows there. I have phantogram tickets for Dallas so catching them at sxsw is not a big deal unless I come across the oppurtunity.
My top show I want to catch will be whatever showcase has KRS-One, but I am not sure where that will be yet, just saw another rapper post about it.
Aside from that St. Vincent is playing at Stubb's Wednesday for the NPR showcase, and that may be a show I fork over money to see since I am missing her Dallas show for sxsw. Damon Albarn's solo band is also playing that showcase. If I recall, Andrew Bird was $35 the other year, but i skipped that for a free Kasabian show. My Morning Jacket played the NPR showcase in 2008 debuting Evil Urges and that is when I became an MMJ fan.
It sounds like Auditorium shores may be closed this sxsw and replaced by Butler Park for free shows. I think it across the street from auditorium shores and Foster The People is one of the headliners. I saw them play at EMO's at sxsw when they were still fledgling. The fun of sxsw is new band discovery.
Twitter is the best bet for knowing what is happening, I have a sxsw list I made under my rideincircles account adding most everything relevant, but @cameronatsxsw and @sxswpartylist are two of the best people to follow on twitter for party info.
Here is a good site for updated info. It has a newbie guide and also just posted all the new shows announced this week.
2 weekks away!! Alright got my schedule all worked out. Gonna catch Jagwar Ma, Temples, London Grammar, Ghost Loft, Chain Gang of 1974, Speedy Ortiz, Band of Skulls, Twin Shadow, Robert Delong, and Factory Floor as of now.
Anyone know what the auditorium shores shows are this year?

Wow! The Pitchfork showcase is at the Central Presbyterian Church. I've heard the acoustics there are great for singer-songwriters. It seems odd Pitchfork will be there.
edit: The performers so far for that particular showcase are
Real Estate Mark Kozelek Forest Swords Mas Ysa Hundred Waters Angel Olsen EMA
I thought for a minute they were going to be featuring Coachwhips, Fucked Up, and Perfect Pussy at the church.

The auditorium shores shows are replaced by the butler park shows this year. I read some construction is happening there. So far Foster The People was the main line-up addition I have seen playing there.
I still haven't even started putting together much for my schedule. Been to busy and do512 is blocked at work.
I am looking at heading down on Tuesday if all goes as planned. Still need to see what my work schedule will be like.

Hype Hotel RSVP is up. I don't think it will close the RSVP like Fader does, but they killed it on the line-up last year with the best stage set-up and free drinks. RSVP and picking up a wristband is mandatory.

Here is one that caught my eye.
In other headlines, Soundgarden is playing Superunknown in it's entirety and Lady Gaga was denied a permit to play inside a giant Dorito's vending machine.
