Thanks for undertaking this task of policing how the board works. I think it is so worth it. Hate having to scroll through such negative comments about bands to get to what I really want - positivity about bands we are fans of!

Have these changes somehow made the board worse? The board is much worse now. I'm not sure if this change was the cause, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but maybe we should consider the possibility? We seem to be attracting fewer people interested in actually talking about music now that the Which Stage is closed to noobs.

The Which stage is only "closed to noobs" until they make 10 posts elsewhere (and there are a good amount of basic threads to do that in). Then they are allowed in.
What specifically do you mean by "much worse now"? I've been on here for years and haven't really noticed any major shift but that could be because I'm blinded to it a bit. More details/examples would help and if you had any other suggestions I'd like to hear them. Really, the only change is that they can't start a brand new thread in Which until 50 posts and can't reply in Which until 10 posts. They can still talk all they want about music in The Music Lounge and get up to 10 posts in the What stage threads alone. So I'm not sure that these are the cause of the board being "worse" but I'm open to discussion/suggestions on what you think would help.

I'm banning the guy as fast as I can. What do you suggest? And I'm not being sarcastic, I would honestly like some suggestions.

Well, obviously "worse" is subjective. I know the view that things have been pretty crummy lately is shared by at least a few others, but maybe it's best that they speak up about it.
But I do feel, objectively, that there is much less discussion about music, which in my opinion makes the board worse. I think that by closing off the main music discussion area to new people might not be serving much purpose. We're still getting plenty of idiots, they're just screwing up the other threads now instead of the Which Stage. And I assume some people who are only really interested in lineup talk are getting in advertently turned away. I post here, the Coachella board, and the Lolla board, and I know for all of those I only started doing so to discuss lineup specific things.

There have been racial/racist issues with different posters for years. It comes and goes, that's nothing new.
I think it's just the nature of the proximity to Roo. Give it another month and the idiots will go away. If you see a jackass posting, don't participate in the thread. Not feeding the fire lets it die.

Yea, I'm fine with people speaking up with suggestions if they feel the board has gotten worse. I just feel like there were a lot of requests months back for limiting what new members could and couldn't post about (or at least....where they could post) so we opted for the 10 and 50 post limits on some things. Now what we're hearing is that limiting the new members is potentially causing a problem so I'm just trying to figure out what people think the best solution would be.
But I do feel, objectively, that there is much less discussion about music, which in my opinion makes the board worse.
I think you may be right about less music discussion but I don't think the rules are the cause of that but rather the influx of new members and the disappearance of other active music-minded posters (guys who used to have plenty of discussion/debate about music like Karosko, Zapp, Juggs, Jess, and a bunch of others). Basically, these new rules don't limit people from posting about music in the Music Lounge section and if you check out the Which stage right now (ignoring the Kanye/Jack White arguments) there are a good deal of new topics about the music at Roo.
I think that by closing off the main music discussion area to new people might not be serving much purpose. We're still getting plenty of idiots, they're just fucking up the other threads now instead of the Which Stage.
We get an occasional new member who fucks up stuff outside of the Which stage but that actually helps us find/spot them earlier. If they ignored the welcome PM and make a music thread in the What stage we let them know. If they clearly are ignoring the info we provide or trolling in other sections it's easier to notice and suspend/ban/delete/lock whatever is needed.
And I assume some people who are only really interested in lineup talk are getting in advertently turned away. I post here, the Coachella board, and the Lolla board, and I know for all of those I only started doing so to discuss lineup specific things.
I hear what you're saying and if some people are choosing to not sign up or not continue posting because they can't muster up 10 posts elsewhere on the boards (it's insanely easy/simple to do) I'm not sure what to do. We were complained to that the new members would mess up the Which stage and that we wanted to see the quality of posting go up so we came up with this solution. Obviously, you and others don't think the system works but I don't think it's as bad as you make it sound. We've had a lot of new members in the past couple of months who join right in with the conversations and there hasn't been a whole lot of negativity surrounding the "10 posts before you discuss music" rule.
I'm not sure if you were one of the people who supported using a private section/private thread for discussion but we felt that would be more harmful than this system that is set up in terms of turning away people who wanted to discuss Bonnaroo music. So let's ignore the "private subforum" and "10 posts before you can join in on the which stage" ideas and see if there are any other suggestions or solutions to the problems that are being brought up. I'm going to make a new thread and move these posts in there after work so we can continue to flesh out some ideas.

I don't think I supported the full-on "sandbox" idea, but I'm pretty sure I generally supported this change when you made it. But that's not really the point. I just think it might be good to sit back and say "it's been six months, is it working?" Right now I think the answer is no.
A waiting period before starting a thread may be a good thing, but I'm not sure there's any benefit to Which Stage purgatory anymore.

The reason we went against a waiting period was because of the points people were making about rideshares or meetups or things like that but it's a possible solution we can look at again. I'm just not sure how making someone wait to start a thread would help things any more than making them post 10 times before starting a thread.
In the example of the dingus who keeps creating accounts to say Ice Cube is racist then that's just something that used to happen much more often and has kind of gone away. If we limit that guys thread-making abilities for a certain amount of time he'll just start replying in existing threads to spread his trollish behavior.
It's not a bad suggestion but I'm not sure how easy it is to simply make a time limit before someone can create a thread. I'll look into it but then we run into the occasional issue of someone who signs up for a last minute ride/carpool because theyre travel plans fell apart being told they can't start new threads. Of course, there are work arounds for things like that but we'll have to brainstorm and come up with some options.
I'd also like to hear other opinions on the topic from others. They can be posted in here (and I'll move all of them to a new thread later, like I said).

I wish I had suggestions for you, but unfortunately there's nothing you moderators can really do to make people less racist. There have been a lot of racially loaded comments about Kanye since Monday, particularly in the Jack White thread, but I get that most of them aren't offensive enough to moderate outright. I was mostly posting to say that I agree with horn: the boards have been awful since Monday. I don't have a solution, but I think it's important to acknowledge the problem.

FTR, I was mainly just talking about preserving the Which Stage minimum number of posts before starting a thread waiting period. I get that that wouldn't work in other areas of the board.
At the end of the day, I think a lot of people miss having Juggs and Flanzo around to be assholes to new members say what others might be thinking. They definitely played an important role in terms of moderating the board, even if they weren't officially moderators. It's one thing to disappear after making stupid comments. But getting a tongue lashing from the aforementioned for making an ignorant comment definitely would make people think twice before they say something dumb. I know when I was new here I was nervous to post something stupid for fear of getting verbally assaulted by Juggs.
A big problem recently IMO is useless (and often mind numbing) posts going completely unchecked. I like to dick around about nothing on here as much as the next person, but I agree there has been a greater amount of completely brain rotting content here over the past couple months.
I don't know of any solutions. Maybe we are looking in the wrong place in terms of the post quota for Which Stage or creating threads. Or maybe horn is right and people who would ordinarily talk about music are deciding to contribute garbage posts to meet the quota...thus creating a ton of crap posts.

1. I thought the new posting rules made Inforoo a better place during pre-roo season 2. I think rational music discussion will rise to the top of new posts as post-roo season beings, right now the board is just so flooded with "traffic was bad monday" "I saw some girl pass out and nobody did nuthin" type bonnaroo impressions its hard to find the music discussion in it all 3. I am a firm believer that a board needs non-moderator enforcer types, like Juggs. Idiots who think they can do whatever the hell they want on the internet need to be told what they think, believe, and feel means nothing. I was sad to see him leave and hope he returns. 4. Sometimes I thought Juggs went overboard with his tongue-lashings, but whatever, he was worth it.
Generally, as a community I think we do a pretty good job of calling new people out on their bullshit. No I don't mean ice cube so cold, trolls like that are better ignored and banned. But the guy who thinks Led Zeppelin is going to play bonnaroo, or when bonnaroo was all jambandz it was all peace and love, or thinks Real Estate is going to breakthrough and headline in 2015, needs to be told to sit down and shut his fucking mouth, not just for the board's sake, but for the guy's sake.
And mods can't always play that role, we have to play that role, but in a balanced way. We can't do it just to get joy out of it, but do it with the purpose of not letting the idiots take over.
In my other hobby, I've seen both extremes: boards where the idiots have completely taken over and everything on the forum is worthless subjective crap, and boards who literally tell everyone who signs up to fuck off. The latter board is actually a much better forum, but has seen zero growth in years, which really is how we want it.
But I do think we want steady growth on inforoo, if for no other reason than the replace the quality posters who have drifted away for one reason or another, and also to provide a place to offer quality advice regarding the Bonnaroo experience to people who are able to listen. Just as inforoo freely provided me with the information I needed to have a safe and fulfilling Bonnaroo experience, I want to be able to pass what little experience I have on to others. In order to do that we have to make sure the signal is getting through, and isn't overtaken by the noise.
I'll try to make that my only "what inforoo means to me" rant for the quarter.

What do you suggest we change? Just remove the limit for 10 posts to post in the Which stage completely? We put this limit into place to combat the people who show up around lineup release and flood the section with duplicate threads or ridiculous/hate-filled posts but as always we are open to suggestions.
I'm not totally sure if this is possible ( I think it is but don't want to guarantee before looking into it again) but do you feel it would be better to allow new members to respond to threads in the Which stage but not create them until they reach a certain post limit? That way we avoid a ton of repeat threads or complaint threads but still give people who want to discuss the lineup a chance to respond to things?

Yeah, I think that's the ticket. Duplicate threads are annoying and probably a pain for the mod, so not letting new people start one makes sense. But I just don't see the point and prohibiting new users from coming to a music festival discussion forum and not being able to talk about music at that festival Maybe it weeds out a few morons, but if we survived Kanye West being on the lineup, I think we can manage. Besides, would it really be so bad if some bozo came into the headliner thread clamoring for Iggy Azalea, which then spurred an actual conversation about WHY her music is terrible?

I'd love that but the problem is that it doesn't always spur an actual conversation about why her music is terrible. It usually spurs an onslaught of jokes and insults to the person who posted it lol. That would be great if it always happened like that, but it doesn't always go that smoothly. Then that new person feels singled out and "piled on" because they just posted their opinion/hopes and got attacked.
Obviously, some people are more used to message boards and will take the hits and realize it's all part of the game but a lot of the people we get on here as new members are not usually familiar with message boards and don't think the jokes are kind-hearted (and to be fair...there are jokes/insults that aren't just busting someone's chops). Part of this was to ease people in and see how things go before they jump right in.
There were a few different reasons for these things but you make good points. Will definitely discuss this possible change with the other mods and let you know.
What would really help us out is if you veteran members would start to use the report buttons more when someone "braindead" is posting or trolling or whatever. We get complaints every year about how we don't deal with all the trolls when the fact is we don't always see them when they first are posting and are only told about it after 20 people have done their best to come up with some witty insult to the troll.

Well, it would probably also help to have a larger active mod team...

So your saying that you don't read every single post in every single thread every single day? WTF are you mods doing all day then? What the hell are we paying you for? .
