Ok, so I had this all planned out. Bonnaroo is a 4 hour drive from here. I leave Memphis Thursday morning/afternoon, and get to Manchester by Thursday afternoon/evening, depending on traffic. But, the more I think about it, the more I think this might be too early.
I keep reading posts about getting crappy camping spots that are far, far away and way too close to each other. So, is Thursday a bad day PERIOD if you want to get a good spot? And, I know I live fairly close, but should I count on traffic being insane more so Friday than Thursday?
I agree with deloused. Shoot for 1 pm on Thursday. There will be a ton of people arriving on Wednesday and BFE should be full by 1:00 putting you in a prime location.
Yeah, we usually leave Knoxville around 9 a.m. to get there around 12 p.m. We didn't go in until Friday last year, but on Thurs. in '04, we only waited in line an hour and a half or so, and we had a really decent camping spot (maybe 5-10 min. to Centeroo). We are planning on doing the same again this year.
I think they give the really bad spots to the people who get there before they officially open. It seems like it's kind of like, "okay, we'll let you in, but we told you not to get here so early, so we aren't going to be too helpful."

I live in Memphis, too. It's a total crap shoot, honestly. I have not completely figured out how they do it yet. the Last 3 years, they were filling up the back campground (the one way off to the side surrounded by trees). I got stuck at the very back of that camp TWICE, in 03 and 04.
IN 03 we left early Thursday morning and got there mid-Thursday morning. In 04 We left Wednesday evening and got there in the wee wee hours of Thursday AM, still got shoved in the back.
Last year, we left at 6 PM on wednesday night, and were set up by Midnight Wednesday night with a prime-time spot, about 250 yards from the VIP. However, we did have an RV and a pass, so we lucked out and got put in the closest RV campground. Though we did get put in a far away spot, we actually moved closer once the parking crew left. After we were setup last year, we watched the traffic rolling in and noticed they were shoving everyone to the way-back campground where we were stuck in 03 and 04. So I think they fill up the very-back campground first.
The time you leave has several factors attached to it. Say you leave wednesday night. You won't get a very good spot (unless you get lucky), but you will skip the traffic (we sat in 5 minutes last year, with literally 2 cars in front of us at the toll booths). If you leave thursday, prepare for a minimum of 2-4 hours of traffic or more, but you may get a better spot, or you may not. IF you don't show up until friday, you'll sit in traffic, and you'll get a bad spot.
So Ideally, the time to leave is between Wednesday at 6pm and Thursday at 6am, and just pray you luck out with a good spot.
Realistically, outside of VIP and Tent-only, there just aren't that many GREAT spots. There are FAR more bad spots, than good spots. When I say bad, I'm talking more than a 10 minute walk to Centeroo.

i am in cordova, but we'll leave for roo from nashville. its never the same for me when we leave. i have been in different places the last three years and always left around the same time.
Well we go in on wednesday nights still and with them dropping the capacity this year, maybe they will not put people back in BFE like they have done previously......I am not sure about that, but it would make sense, since it was a little remote back there from the rest of the area
I am in Germantown, and will pack Tuesday night (have it all basically ready to go, save clothing), go to work Wed morning, then leave directly from work Wednesday around 3, plan on being there sometime around 7 PM Wednesday (gives me a night to relax, get some good sleep, and be fully prepped for the fun starting Thursday).
This is my 4th trip (years 1, 2, and 9), and it is a crap shoot. I have gone in the north side entrance, the south side, and the east side...soooo, this year, I'm going through either Chattanooga or two exits toward Chattanooga (Hwy 64 all the way across), which will put me on I-24 heading toward Nashville, and I'll go in the west side (the little Bonnaroo exit off I-24)....see how that goes.
Basically, they are all good spots, as you're with cool people there for fun and great music.....there are no real bad spots.....smile.
PS: I'm going solo and have an extra seat, if anyone knows someone needed a trip over.
