Hey there, this will be my first time at Bonnaroo this year. Can anyone clue me in as to how the rail riding works? At Free Fest you had to line up before the act on the side of the stage and they let you in. Is this the same case? Thanks in advance.

It is for the two main stages. For the headliners, some will line up really early in the day, but it isn't usually necessary. Tents are first come first serve.

If you happen to feel like not waiting in those lines but still want to be pretty close to the stage for a band, just know you have to get to the stage they're playing at suuuuper early, like a few bands before....I had been to a few fests, but my first Roo I wasn't ready for how big the crowds are and how early you have to get places to beat the crowds.

Just to add a little to Dave Maynar's reply, the two main stages (What and Which) have pits that are fenced off, and yes, the entrances to the pits are way up front and way off to the sides. They supposedly empty out the pits after every show. So even if the pit is completely full for the 3:00pm show, (in theory) you will still be able to get in the pit for the 5:00pm show - assuming of course, you were in line early enough. In my experience "early enough" is mid-way through the act right before the one you want to see. Play it safe and get in line earlier if you expect the particular show to be a very popular one (for example, when My Morning Jacket played the afternoon show at What Stage). The pit line for What Stage for the headliners will always be long - show up a little extra early. I was able to get in the pit for Metallica, Tool, and Dave Matthews at What Stage.
I didn't go last year, so I can't say with certainty, but I have read on here that the pit for Which Stage is only for VIP's. Worth investigating the first time you go into Centeroo if we can't find a definitive answer before then.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Last year at both stages they had one pit line for VIPs, and another line for general admission.

Last year there were pits on either side of both the main stages, with separate lines for each. and VIP had their own areas next to the pits of the Which Stage and a little farther back at the What Stage. For a 2:30 show at Which, we were in line at 1:00 and were the last people let in. It happened multiple times because those pits are pretty small. Not as much of a problem at the What Stage. I have a friend who got into the pit three times at What without waiting, including Paul McCartney. But headliner lines start at soon as the field for the What Stage opens just FYI.
I was a first timer last year and was trying to figure out the pit situation too. I read the pit procedures in the books they handed out at the tollbooths and figured it couldn't be too hard. So I tried to get pit for Kendrick and I arrived about half way into Macklemore's (I think he was before Kendrick) set. I pushed pretty far to the right and didn't really see any organized line or way to access or get into the pit. Did I not push far enough right or in? Was hoping for a bit more detail as to how to get IN or NEAR the pit line. Still was fairly close but not as close as I hoped. Freshman woes.

Disclaimer: I was not in attendance last year, so this is my previous experience. I always entered on the left side as you are looking at What Stage. Front of the line is by that white tent that is circled. Not sure exactly where the entrance is on the right. I also have no knowledge of Which Stage pits since I was not there last year. Hope this helps!
where is the VIP area on this map? Guessing its the more sparsely attended area sort of in the center shading to stage left.
It's the fence off area directly below the arrow for the left side pit entrance. This may be what you were referring to, but I can't remember which is stage left.
