"Rage against the machine, black Zack de la Rocha/ In a cranberry Rossta, inside track on the G rap poster/ Best d-boy all I'm missing is a dash/ Difference between me and Hova"
One-half (with his older brother Malice, known now as No Malice) of the greatest 21st century hip-hop duo this side of Outkast, Clipse, Pusha was slingin' his brand of visceral coke-rap since the days when Rick Ross was still William Leonard Roberts. Lord Willin' and especially Hell Hath No Fury were instant hip-hop classics, propelled by some of Pharrell and The Neptunes' most minimal, brilliant production to date and Pusha and Malice's relentlessly vicious flow. The beats are stark and rhythmic, and each song encaptures a different soundscape than that which preceded it. Following a poor commercial performance for HHNF (despite rave reviews from critics and rap-nerds alike) and a lackluster follow-up in Til the Casket Drops, Pusha more or less disappeared from the hip-hop scene before enjoying a career resurgence (preceding Pharrell's own career resurgence in 2013) via Kanye's G.O.O.D. music label, appearing on the best song on one of Kanye's best albums, "Runaway," and tearing apart G.O.O.D. Music singles like "Mercy" and "New God Flow." Then, late last year, he finally dropped his highly-anticipated official solo debut, the highly underrated My Name Is My Name (taken from a famed line uttered by Marlo Stanfield in The Wire), featuring killer tunes like "Numbers on the Boards," "Nosetalgia" (featuring King Kendrick Lamar), and "40 Acres." With Kanye helming the production this time around, Pusha's sound had unquestionably changed from his days in Clipse, but the deep-voiced fury of his cadence remained the same. From the flukey hit "Grindin'" to the steel-drum madness of "Wamp Wamp (What It Do)" up to "Runaway" and "40 Acres," Pusha T has long been one of the more underappreciated rap demigods the 21st century has given us.
Some killer verses:
"Grindin" From ghetto to ghetto, to backyard to yard I sell it whipped un-whipped, it’s soft or hard I'm the neighborhood pusha Call me Subwoofer, cause I pump base like that, Jack On or off the track, I'm heavy cous Ball 'til you fall, cause you could duck to the Feddy Govs Sorry my love, what I'm seeing through these eyes Benz convoys with the wagon on the side Only big boys keep deuces on the ride Gucci Chuck Taylor with the dragon on the side Man, I make a buck, why scram I'm trying to show y'all who the fuck I am The jewels is flirting, be damned if I'm hurting Legend in two games like I'm Pee Wee Kirkland Platinum on the block with consistent hits While Pharrell keep talking this music shit
"New God Flow" I believe there's a God above me I'm just the God of everything else I put holes in everything else "New God Flow," fuck everything else Supreme dope dealer, write it in bold letters They love a nigga's spirit like Pac at the Coachella They said Pusha ain't fit with the umbrella But I was good with the Yay as a wholesaler I think it’s good that 'Ye got a blow dealer A hot temper, matched with a cold killer I came aboard for more than just to rhyme with him Think ’99, when Puff woulda had Shyne with him (Yuugh!) (Matching Daytonas, rose gold on us) Goin' H·A·M in Ibiza done took a toll on us (But since you over do it, I’mma pour more) Well if you goin' coupe, I’m goin' four door
"40 Acres" Unpolished, unapologetic This cocaine cowboy pushed it to the limit You thought Tony in that cell would've made us timid We found his old cell, bitch, we searchin' through the digits Anything Spanish, got me speaking Spanglish Money universal, that's the only language The dream ain't die, only some real niggas We was born to mothers who couldn't deal with us Left by fathers who wouldn't build with us I had both mine home, let's keep it real niggas My better half chose the better path, applaud him Younger brother me a spoiled child, I fought him I heard that the Devil's new playground is boredom The California top just falls back like autumn And they say I'm on the verge of winning I claim victory when Malice on the verge of sinning Old habits die hard That rainy day bag buried in the backyard It's heaven for a hustler, no graveyards Cause stand up niggas don't lie on no floors Much rather burn us, ashes to ashes Mix us with the powder, sell us to the masses We gon' keep it tight, rip it off the plastic Now you celebrate motherfuckers raise your glasses Push
No mention of his mixtapes: Wrath of Caine, Fear of God, Fear of God 2: Let Us Pray? Criminal! All of those are very solid and IMO Fear of God 2 was excellent.

THIS. This brings back so many memories. I feel like even if someone is unfamiliar with Pusha they will recognize this verse. Great Day 2, A$AP Rosko!

I have a blind spot for mixtapes. Not just with Pusha but with all artists.
Not gonna lie, didn't really know who pusha t was. Then I heard "new god flow" for the first time yesterday & really liked it. It just so happens that push t was the band of the day yesterday too. It's like the universe was telling me something. That something is to listen to more pusha. Thank you.

I've long been completely obsessed with Hell Hath No Fury, and love Pusha's work with on Cruel Summer, but I admit MNIMN didn't do much for me at first. It was on about the 3rd or 4th listen that I began to comprehend its greatness.
So if you don't get it at first, I encourage you to keep trying.

"Suicide" is my obsession right now. That hook is crazy stuck in my head. Wondering when he plays this at Bonnaroo if it would be appropriate to angrily shove past people to move to the front during the hook.
