Biography: Upon first listen of most any Typhoon song, you will be greeted by a seemingly upbeat arrangement produced by a huge band of 12 members. Delving deeper into the lyrics, however, often reveals a darker theme of mortality, fear, anger, and resentment. This paradox develops from the creative process of the band's primary song writer Kyle Morton.
At the age of 12, Kyle contracted lyme disease by way of a bug bite. His long and painful struggle to beat the disease resulted in Kyle receiving his father's kidney after his began to fail. As you would expect, this roller coaster battle against illness, which represents a large part of his childhood, heavily influenced his outlook on life and remains a primary influence on his songwriting. Kyle formed Typhoon in 2005 in Salem Oregon with a group of his friends. Along with them, he fleshes out complex, and often uplifting arrangements to accompany his melancholy lyrics. This contrast is intentional. Typhoon's philosophy is not to dwell on hardship, but to learn and grow stronger from it.
Experimenting with several different sounds and influences, the band released their first full length album Hunger and Thirst in 2010 with the indie label Tender Loving Empire. This was followed in 2011 by A New Kind Of House, an EP which Kyle has described as a kind of sequel to Hunger and Thirst. Two years later, Typhoon delivered their most comprehensive album yet, White Lighter. A quality album from start to finish, it not only solidifies their sound, but their ability as a band as well.
Genre: Symphonic Indie Rock
Similar Artists: Arcade Fire, Polyphonic Spree, River City Extension
Well, due to Kyle's aforementioned illness, Typhoon has canceled all June tour dates. Looks like Bonnaroo is already working on getting someone to fill their spot.
From the band's facebook:
"Dear Reader,
After a long period of more or less stable health I regret write to you that the pendulum has swung back. I can't go into detail, though I suppose it would be a stretch to say that no one saw this coming. The good news is that I'm home now and expect to make a full recovery; it's just going to take a little time. As you know, illness has little respect for even the best laid plans of mice and men.
In the meantime, we've had to scrap our touring plans for June. My sincere apologies to those affected--I assure you we'll come back around as soon as is possible and prudent. In regards July and August, we'll be keeping all currently scheduled dates and hoping like hell to have this thing licked by then.
