Easy, Mastodon. Deafheaven is good, and I'll be at their set assuming I'm at 'roo and there aren't any killer conflicts. Meshuggah are talented, just never got into them that much.
Not sure how to vote. Love Mastodon's albums, but they're not great live.
Really? I've only seen them once, back during the Leviathan tour. I remember having a great time and enjoying them. Have they fallen off recently, or did you never really care for them live? I remember the live vocals weren't that great, but they're not amazing on the album either.

I'm the opposite. I respect Mastodon a lot, but I just haven't quite hit a stride with them yet. I really wanna see Deafheaven though, they sound like something I would like better live.

I've seen them 3 times, the first was the best, that was right before Leviathan was recorded. The 2nd time the sound was horrible, but the energy was through the roof, the last time was pretty good when they played all of Crack The Skye.

Wait, what? I thought you said they weren't great live? The sound being horrible is usually out of the bands control. You say you enjoyed the first and third time you saw them too, and even the bad sound show had a great energy. I guess I'm confused about whether you'd like to see them again or not

I enjoyed them immensely the first time when they were opening for another band and I had no idea who they were. The 2nd time the sound was horrible, the 3rd time the sound wasn't great either but it was a good show. I would probably see them again, but I won't count on the sound being very good.

I pick Mastodon. My little brother got into metal before me and was really into Meshuggah around 2006, but I didn't really have an ear for heavy music at the time. By '09 I had read a lot about Mastodon and gave Blood Mountain a listen; instantly one of my favorite bands. Now I've seen them 4 times (if you count checking them out for a few songs due to curiosity at Roo '08) and think that they're great live. I'm not the biggest fan of The Hunter, and to be honest the last time I saw them they were only alright. But it was the last show of the tour, so I understand being tired. Currently hoping Mastodon doesn't conflict with Master Musicians, otherwise I may miss them.
All this being said, I think I look forward more to Meshuggah because I've never seen them before and because I like heavier music now. I'm not really into Deafheaven. Just doesn't work for me.

Maybe I'm off on this, but I always assumed sound issues were more on the venue's side then the bands (assuming the band had time to soundcheck). The two times you saw them with bad sound, was it at the same venue? I don't know, I just think it's a little strange to say Mastodon isn't great live when your sole issue with them live seems to be poor sound at a venue.
I try to NEVER see a show at the Austin Music Hall, it has atrocious sound no matter what. Seriously, who thought it would be a good idea to build a venue with massive amounts of exposed concrete EVERYWHERE? And it's a relatively new venue, they chose to do it.

Nope, but the funny thing is, those first 2 shows were at the same venue. And I admit there is an issue there of bands just turning up to 12 and it's just noise. The last time I saw them was at a venue that normally has great sound and their sound still wasn't that good. They're so loud that everything is muddled and the vocals are not very good, especially Brent.
^Gotcha. I know what you mean about it just being noise after a certain volume. Check out Etymotic's earplugs. I bring them with me to just about every show. They're MUCH better then standard foam earplugs. There's a slight difference in the sound, but my brain adjusts to it quickly and it then sounds normal. Plus, with these in, you can often stand very near the speaker stack without going deaf. I find you can usually get a decent spot there because no one else can tolerate it.
I'm big about keeping my hearing loss to a minimum, while still rocking the fuck out. Too much time hearing my dad say, "What was that?"...he went to quite a few shows in his day. When I'm older, I want to be able to put on a pair of headphones and hear everything crystal clear.
Who knows what the sound issues you experienced were. Maybe they just said fuck a sound check and partied? Holding out hope for some good sound at their roo set.

I actually have some fancy earplugs that I bought like 10 years ago and only used once. I always forget them or most times feel like I don't need them. I've heard that their show at roo in 08 had the same problems as what I experienced. It has been 3 or 4 years since I have seen them, whenever the Crack The Skye tour was. Maybe their live sound is better now but I doubt it. The show will be fun regardless, especially if they're playing all of Leviathan.

Ya, I just keep my set in my car. That way they're a little more accessible. I bring them with me to most shows, and use them for probably 75% of them. Just depends on how loud the show is, or how much I'm willing to sacrifice my hearing. When I saw Tool front row last week, the earplugs stayed in the car. I needed the full physical experience for that one
Maybe Mastodon should do a kickstarter to hire a sound engineer

Deafheaven played at a local bar and they weren't even the main act. These guys are terrible. Mastodon is the better of the three and Meshugguh would be interesting just to check out the drummer, I heard he's pretty bad ass.
Really really hard choice, but I went with Mastodon. I enjoy Sunbather the most out of any album all three bands have made. But, Mastodon is so fucking awesome, every single one of their albums is fantastic, both are can't miss shows for me.

Rock solid argument. Openers are always terrible.
Not exactly my point, but this band is terrible. I do get their name selection because deaf is the only way to enjoy this band. I guess a turd can be considered art to some.

You're voluntarily going to see Twista. You really don't have a leg to stand on here.

I've seen Mastodon 12 times, so it's pretty obvious that I like their live shows. I've never seen Meshuggah, but I've been listening to them for a while and hope their show on the farm kicks ass. Deafheaven grows on me a little more every time I listen to them. Not sure that I'll make it to their set, but of you like noise rock and metal, they'll be your kinda band.

Twista is dope, Deafheaven is dung. I wanna know what the hell the singer is screaming about? To be honest, the band is pretty good, it's the guy screaming that sucks.

Your views on everything are pretty much terrible. "Twista is dope" said nobody, ever.
