So this is my first music festival, and I had a few questions. So like if I want to see Phoenix on Friday night, and then go to see Kanye after that, am I doomed to get a bad spot for Kanye? I won't want to be rude, but is it normal for people to move their way up front, or is it like first come first serve and you have to stay in the back if you're a late arriver to a set? If I don't get to Kanye's 10 p.m. show until like 9:45, am I going to have a bad view? Sorry for the newbie questions, I'm just trying to get a feel for it all.

There are no rules at Bonnaroo. Just try not to be a dick and don't harm anyone physically.

One person moving through a crowd is ok, just don't try to bring your crew of ten and push through to the front 10 mins before kanye comes on. that is not cool.
What's your opinion concerning etiquette and backpacks? I have a Camelbak that keeps me stock throughout the day - TP, sunscreen, Clif bars, etc., and it can get pretty hefty when the bladder is full. Not only is it hard to dance with it on, but I always feel like it's gonna hit the people behind me, especially if the crowd is packed. Sometimes I put it on the ground, but then I worry about straying to far from it as the crowd slowly shifts in different directions, as well as other people (and myself) tripping over it.
I gotta find an all-day sunscreen and a way to hook up a sturdy IV drip I can keep in my pocket. I hate being weighted down at concerts.

Exercise some personal awareness, and you will be fine. If your attempt to have a good time is going to ruin the event for someone else, it may not be worth it. One person wiggling through a crowd is an minor (and expected) inconvenience. A crowd parading over people who set up earlier for the same show is just rude.
As for backpacks, the same rule applies. If you can carry it around without clubbing people, then go for it. I carry my camelbak all weekend. I'll set it down for some shows, but then I stay with it. Just be aware that your dancing may cause discomfort to others, and dance appropriately. Hell, I'll carry a chair with me at times, but I am aware that it can only provide me comfort if I am not creating discomfort for others.

Camelbak - I always wear mine, sometimes I set it down if there is plenty of room. The key is to not whack people with it while jumping/dancing. This is particularly important at tent shows. I have to practice additional awareness as to who is behind me, sometimes even introducing myself and telling them to let me know if the backpack gets annoying. You can also wear your Camelbak in the front when the crowd gets a little tighter, its easier to be aware of it that way.
Moving through crowds - Like everyone else said, one person politely moving through the crowd isn't a big deal, a group of ten people holding hands and training their way to the front is not cool. But be careful even if you are just one person, don't cram yourself into a spot where there really isn't room for you. The good news is the What field is gigantic and you can see and hear extremely well from a variety of positions.
Just the fact that you are asking tells me you are aware of yourself and the impact your actions has on others, which probably means you will be OK at Bonnaroo. It really is about fully grasping that we are all in this together, and only by respecting each other can we get through it.
To quote the great Bill Hicks, or at least quote what the aliens told him when they took him on their UFO: "...all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Heres Tom with the Weather.”
Remember that, put a smile on your face, and you'll be fine.
Just respect that some people had the forethought of "I'm going to devote some amount of time to get a spot for a show I'm really interested in because I DONT want to have to shove through people at the last minute." So many times I've had three 6'4" shirtless dickheads push into an already packed crowd five minutes before the show starts. That shit is not cool.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

I stick my backpack between me feet if I am at a really crowded show. Not in other people's way and I know where it is.
As far as pushing forward, like umphlove said- don't push forward with a big crew because people will be mentally shooting daggers at you and then think about you as they are playing with their voodoo dolls later.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Who wants to be my designated backpack holder? I can pay you in electrolyte tablets and "special" dances.
Hang with a big crew. No so much at Roo because I skip around so much between groups of people, but at other festivals, there are always a few people that want to sit back on a tapestry while others get in the middle of it. People on the tapestry (sometimes it's me) can watch all the bags while others are deep in the tent.

The backpack-between-legs strat is solid. I have found that in addition to keeping my backpack secure, it reigns in some of my more elaborate substance induced whackiness during a show that could potentially bother or distract others because I'm basically anchored to my pack.

Last year I ditched my camelback, for all the reasons mentioned above, and it was glorious!! Instead I wore cargo shorts and put two oranges (perfect for the cottonmouth) and two granola bars in one pocket and a water bottle in he other. I felt so free and could dance without worrying about knocking ppl out.

The What stage to me is great from so many spots. I was ten minutes late to Macca and still got a great sight line and plenty of dancing room. As long as you aren't pushing people, you'll be fine. The people who I get pissed at are the hand holding bros who are too drunk to care about others around them.

And if you insist on duct taping a bunch of crap onto a long stick, don't push your way to to the front of a show just to wave your crap around right in front of the stage. Yes, that happens. Unless you are going to EDM shows, then I think you are required to bring things to hit people with.
I stick my camelbak on the ground with my foot through one of the straps, usually between my legs. Sometimes I switch it around so it's on my front instead of my back which means I can keep it from swinging around and hitting anybody. Both strategies work well.
Go ahead and move up but be conscious of others when you do it. If there's a gap you can fill, fill it but don't knock anyone over trying to get up closer.

I'm sorry if anyone thinks I'm a dick, but if you're trying to squirm past people close to the stage any more than 15 minutes into a set, I'm going to push the shit out of you, and, if possible, stomp on your leg.
I did this to a dude during RHCP at Lollapalooza '12. They were like, 30-40 minutes into their set and the cocksucker was trying to shove his way past the crowd 20 feet behind the rail. He fell over some people, I kicked him in his leg, spit on him, and stole his hat, as he was being dragged out by security.
there are very few things in the world I hate more than those people.

Also, if you're trying to bulldoze through with a group, arms locked, I'm making every effort possible to trip you as close to the middle of your group as possible, so that all of you fall down, and after you all fall down, I'm spitting on all of the females, and kicking all of the males very hard.

Sorry for the hostility, I assure you it wasn't aimed at you. All in all man, if you're polite about it, and don't just try to squeeze your way through spaces that aren't there, I don't think anyone will mind.

I do not like ZZ Top but last year me and a friend were trying to get through the crowd so we could be front for Animal Collective. This old lady grabbed me and yelled at me so fiercely. I have never been yelled at like that ever it was really odd, funny, and shocking all at the same time. We weren't even in like the first 4 rows yet, like damn you really love ZZ Top Ma'am.

Haha can we get this guy the neon yellow Inforoo shirt, so we make sure not to get near him at shows? I feel your pain though man. Irks me when groups just decide to barge through, also knowing they'll be some of the first to leave on their way to the next show they'll show up late for.

You're just too young to grasp how stylin' I really was. All the boys wanted to do me when I was 5. Actually the girls did too. My haircut was confusing.
