Last year my group got to passion pit to see McCartney, so that was about 7-8 hours, but it was completely worth it. By the time Wilco started we were about 10 feet from the pit and that is as far up as we could get until Macca.

I have a tent example. I stayed at That Tent Saturday 2012 for about 8 hours. Pelican>bad brains>flogging molly>puscifer. Couldnt get past third row but the experience was pretty incredible. The double mosh pit of the middle shows was exhausting though. By the time Puscifer, who i was camping for, came out, i could barely stand. Made it though! All four shows were great. Then we got out of the crowd, saw a little childish gambino and then went back to that tent to watch a little danzig. Fun day!
My friends and I started at ten am at the line to get in the main stage field, then waited in the pit line for Paul. All together probably ten hours.
What did you do about drinking water, getting shade, and going to the bathroom during all this?
I had a camel bak and everyone else had their own waters. If you wait on crowd left mainstage near the entrance there is a bathroom. So once we had our spots in line for paul, get to know the people around you and they don't care if you go away for half hour or so to walk to a food vendor or get some beer.
I have the greatest story!
Once they opened up the gates for the main stage field it was a mad dash to get in line for the pit. We ended up running over to crowd left side, and everyone packed into the little rectangle formed by the barriers and the wall. Security guards were trying to get people to line up in pairs all the way back, but! that would have put us farther back then we wanted to be. After the ordeal was over and everyone was happy, this older guy came out of know where saying he was in line and got kicked back to the back by a security (which was complete bull). The security guard standing at the entrance of the pit for that side would not let him get in line where we were. He told the guy he would get his "boys" to put him in the back of the line. He said these people right here are my family! and I know all these faces, and you're face was not one the first people here. It was so awesome!
ok so this video is that security guard, but not the story I was talking about. I hope this guy is back next year, I'm going to make sure and give him a big hug!

Man, y'all who got rail for radiohead in 2012 are far braver than I! I don't even attempt to get pit for headliners. My strategy: get pit for the pre-headliners. Then after the show, exit out of the pit and get directly behind it. That way you still have an amazing spot but don't have to fight for it.
I did this in 2012 for
Rodrigo y Gabriela -> Radiohead
The Roots -> Red Hot Chili Peppers
And it was awesome! This year however, I definitely want to get rail for Little Dragon. I'll be there about 15 minutes before Washed Out goes on and hope I'll be able to shimmy my way in.

Does that work every time? Like if I wanted to do it this year for the Vampire Weekend then Kanye show, would I definitely get pit for both?

I was literally right behind the railing for pit during radiohead. If this works for Radiohead, then I don't see why it wouldn't work for any other headliner that Bonnaroo books. The exit of the pit is really conveniently located for this.
Edit: Although, Vampire Weekend is coming off of a really hot album right now. It's probably going to be harder to get pit for them, you might have to wait a bit. For the 2 pre headliners I got pit for in 2012 I just strolled right in with no wait.

11 hours waiting in the 3rd row for Mumford & Sons. 7.5 hrs on the rail last week at Big Guava, but I wanted to see every band at one stage that day. So I camped out at the gates then ran like my life depended on it and stayed glued to the rail. Only left once when I found out about meet & greet passes. Both times were totally worth it. That being said, I won't be doing that for anyone at Roo this year. There's way too much to do and see.
Last year I did a solid 7 hours to see Blur at Coachella Wknd2, that Stone Roses set felt like eternity. So worth it to be that close to Coxon and Albarn playing those tunes together though.
Im about to stand at the rail for 7 hours for modest mouse at shaky knees
Were you, by chance, wearing a Bonnaroo 2013 t-shirt? We may have been camping directly behind you for 6 of those hours.
I wish I could've been on the rail but unfortunately I had to work that morning and didn't get there til 6:30.... I did wait 6 hours on the rail for The National the day before though

Besides waiting for The Shins in 2012, Ive never waited at a stage for front row or pit. This year though is going to be a long wait. After the brunch, around 12 Im gunna go straight to the What to wait for VW, Im thinking there will be no line yet (hopefully). Saturday I haven't decided if I am willing to skip Damon to wait for a good spot for Chromeo/Cut Copy (probably won't), and then Im thinking about sleeping that night at the what to start the line for Arctic Monkeys (dk if this is necessary though)

I waited about 2 hrs to get a decent spot for Tame Impala last year. Most shows, somehow I walk up and manage to get a decent spot. But I'm only 5'7". If it's a band I really want to see, I'll wait - but otherwise, I'm not going to miss out on other acts for a good spot every time. They have to be a special band in my eyes for me to do that.. It's all about having fun, if you're having fun then it doesn't matter where you are.
My record for waiting so far is about 30 min, so lame.
Same as me, as indicated above. I love reading threads like this because I have a lot of respect for the people with the patience to stick it out in one spot for several hours, but I just can't do it. In Centeroo I just want to run around and see everything and talk to strangers.
My festival ideal is for the act to be starting just as I approach the stage. Zero downtime is the goal.
I spent about 6 or 7 hours at the That tent rail last year on Thursday. I wasn't waiting for any particular act though, I just really wanted to see every act on that stage that day.

Made In America 2012 4:00 Arrival 4:45PM — Jill Scott 6:15PM — Run DMC 8PM — Drake 9PM — 11PM Pearl Jam
A few reasons we stayed put. 1) I figured that the crowd would only grow and grow and grow till Pearl Jam ended. Turned out that once Drake was over most of the crowd dispersed and I got a good few feet away from the rail. 2) The schedule just made sense to do it that way. I wanted to see Run DMC for the first live appearance in a long time, and also get close for my first PJ show (all while holding composure while suffering through Drizzy). Though rarely at Roo can I justify sitting at one stage to see 4 acts while I could be seeing 7 I really want to go to elsewhere.
I have done all day rail rides many times in my 6 years of Roo, but never for one act. It has always been when there are several acts im interested in seeing all in one tent with others acts I don't know but have heard good things about. Please don't be the asshole who waits for their favorite act and doesn't show any respect to the other people there enjoying the music that is currently playing. Those people suck.
Anyone have any experience or advice on staying at one stage all day (or several hours) to get a good spot in the crowd for a band? Besides learn to go without going to the bathroom?
2012 Radiohead was the longest I've stayed in one place. Almost 9 hours waiting for the pit (totally worth it). Everyone was relaxing- sitting & watching from the side of the stage the bands that played before Radiohead. Everyone was chill and held each other's spots when someone had to use the restroom. You can only be standing in the pit for one band at a time, so if you want to watch more than one band on the same stage you'd have to camp out all day in the main area with little chance to have your spot saved when you need to leave to use the restroom.
2011 we also waited in the pit line for Arcade Fire. That was a completely different story. It was JAM PACKED, big old hot mess of people about to pass out from heat exhaustion. The line for the pit opened only 3 1/2 hours before they played but the wait was much more grueling than the 9 hour wait for Radiohead. Definitely no chance of using the bathroom or even moving an inch within the line. The rest of our time at Bonnaroo that year was tainted from my horrible back pains from standing in that line.
Another thing is- I would not recommend wearing flip flops if you decide to go pit option. From my experience there is a stampede once they open the gate for everyone to file in. My fiance lost a shoe due to someone stepping on and ripping his flip flop on the way in, haha.
I guess my point is that even with similar conditions (same amount of people attending the show, same sort of hype around the artist playing, same time of night, same stage) you will probably have a different experience every time. You just have to go with your gut and try to make the right decision for how you're feeling! Make sure you have a camelbak and cliff bars!! happy ROOing!

I'd say that will be unnecessary for Arctic Monkeys. Also, they close down the What field every night. Unless you meant sleep outside the gates they put up at night for the What field.

Thats good to know, I've never waited at the what, and I was purely going off of their popularity and the set time. What you think like 11am, or noon?

I'm not an expert at getting in the pit, but if you wanted to be on the railing then you could get to the What field right as they are opening it (usually an hour before the first act goes on) and immediately head over to start the Arctic Monkeys line for the pit. If you don't need to be on the railing, just get in the pit, then I would show up two acts (maybe one if you are lucky) ahead of time and get in line.
I'll never forget how hot it was staying in This Tent for Of Montreal > Bon Iver > Decemberists, moving up closer and closer to the stage as each show ended, but never leaving the tent for water.
I wouldn't recommend it, but it was worth it.
Did the same last year for Japandroids > Alt-J > Vaccines, but at least it was night time and not so hot.

Last year I stayed at this tent through glen hansard and foals to eventually get a front and center rail spot for jim James. I had an amazing spot, but by the time Jim James ended I had to piss soooo bad! Also, I wanted to see glen hansard and foals so that played into it as well.

So, I want to get close for Kaskade on Saturday night. I'm hoping that since there are so many conflicting acts I can make this happen, but I definitely want to see the Superjam too. So that's a 45 min gap after Superjam ends and Kaskade begins. Is that going to provide me enough time?

I would definitely leave before superjam ends. General rule of thumb for getting a good spot is to be at the stage you want before the previous act ends. When the first act ends and everyone clears out, fight the crowd of people like a salmon going up river and grab your spot.
Be polite about it though. No pushing is necessary.
