You may want to email them they may be assigned. I did tent city 2 years ago and had to check in. It was great to just move right in. I recommend bringing a marker/flag to easily find your tent. Plus the floor of the tent is fabric/vinyl so an old mat or rug to put down will make it easier to move around while your in it.
We did tent city once back in 2010. We arrived pretty late at night so it was difficult to determine how they are assigning tents. Yes we had to check in but it seemed like they were just assigning you the next available tent in the column. The earlier you arrive, i'm assuming, the closer you will be toward the front of the POD (closer to Centeroo) and the later you arrive the farther away you will be. However I must say it was a blessing we arrived later since it was SOOOO hot that year being at the back of the pod actually meant we were closer to our vehicle so we could escape to enjoy a little A/C.
Also a few tips: - I would definitely bring some duct tape so you can tape the floor of the tent to the walls to keep out bugs (mainly ants) - Absolutely bring an EZ-UP or some sort of shade tent. It gets WAY to hot in those tents - Have a flashlight when wandering around Tent City at night. The support strings they use to hold the tents up can trip you up, literally.
