My wife and her friend are flying in to go to Bonaroo. They are split on whether they should just try and buy a bunch of camp gear there and maybe donate it afterwards, but stuff hear and pack it into a suitcase, or just rent a hotel and drive to the festival each day. With that in mind, I have a few questions:
1. How likely are stores to be sold out of gear around the 9th?
2. Her friend believe that they will be going from stage to stage from 11am until 4pm and then going back to the tents for a few hours of sleep. How realistic is this? They are not the most outgoing girls so I think they are going to fade pretty quickly. Anybody have previous experience?
3. If they got a rental car and a hotel, how hard would it be to drive and park there each day?
4. What is the food like? My wife is a big health nut and will not make it 4 days on junk food. Is there a wife variety?
I don't mean to be negative, but has your wife done much research on Bonnaroo? This feels like a future "Bonnaroo: Hell on Earth" author situation to me. In any case:
1. The Manchester Walmart may be out of stuff, but anyone else should have camping supplies. That said flying with everything you need is totally possible (I have done it 5 times). I would go that route.
2.First of all music doesn't start until after noon. Chances are you won't be able to sleep in your tent any time the sun is up so if they want a nap they are better off bring a blanket and sleeping under a tree or something in centeroo. I'm not the most outgoing person in the world either, but that doesn't fly at Bonnaroo. It's like a family reunion.
3. There is day parking, and also some hotel w/ shuttle options.
4. There are tons of food options, I'm sure she will have no problem finding something.
Haha it kind of does. They didn't research as much as they should have. How long is the walk to Centeroo from the camping area? Is te day parking easy or will they has to wait hours to get a parking spot of they go that route?

Is there any other tips you can give them?
It can really depend on where you get put. I have had a range from 5-30 minute walk. I would say the longest is about 40 minutes.
I have never day parked but I would imagine it takes a while Thursday and then is pretty easy Fri-Sun.
So getting there early is a good thing if you are camping ?
Are there a decent amount of portapotties around? How much do the showers cost? What is the average cost of a meal?
Sorry to keep bothering you, I just want to make sure they properly plan everything out so I am not woken up in the middle of the night when they get themselves in trouble lol

Getting there real early will land her in Pod 1 which is not the best (but far from the worst) spot. Don't believe roo's lies on the first in getting the best spots.
Portas are decent. She should bring some tp and wet wipes in her bag when she goes into Centeroo as tp disappears early on in some/many portas. Showers are $5 or $7 depending on the time you go. Meals can run anywhere from $5 to $13ish depending on what she gets.

Based on what I read, I think they should go the hotel/shuttle route. Bonnaroo.com has plans available. If she's considering hotel/car rental route, why not just eliminate the car hassle and pay for a ride? They won't have to worry about parking nor being under the influence.
To me, the best sets are between 4pm-4am so 11am-4pm would not be a good idea.
Sounds like Roo has plenty of food options available.
Actually, getting there early can often lead to a further camping spot. It is fairly impossible to predict where you will end up though. Being further away isn't always a bad thing though. If you don't mind the walk and don't plan on going to camp often it can be nice to be further away.
There are plenty of portapotties everywhere, they will be in various levels of cleanliness though based on how recently they were cleaned.
Showers are $8 I think?
There is a pretty big variation on food prices (5-20$), but I would say expect similar to any fair/festival situation about $10-12 a meal would be a good benchmark.
They are flying in the 9th, into Nashville, they want to take some time and experience Nashville so that's why they are getting a rental car.
I looked at hotel and shuttle packages and they are quite pricy. Te girls are not that big of drinkers.
I always fly in and have gotten rental cars the last couple years.
Have they ever camped before? Do they do well with heat and dirt? If not a hotel may be the best option. That said the options for hotels are going to be getting sparse with it being a month away
Also, sorry for the typos, I am on my phone. They are planning on being in Centeroo from music start till music stop at 4am
I've stayed in Centeroo that long before, it is tiring but it can be done...to me if someone is going to do this then they have to be ok with power napping on the ground somewhere in Centeroo...which you will see is extremely common for people to do.

It's impossible to describe Bonnaroo camping, it is so various. There are lots and lots of campers, so we are close. It can be so hot you can't be in your tent in the daytime, and sometimes cold (please) at night, so have a warm blanket and sweats to sleep in. There is always loud thumpin' sounds until 4-6 am. If you can't sleep with that, then 6 am - 9 am are your best hours. It starts to heat up too much in the tents after that. Could sleep outside in camp, though. However, I always have been SOOOOO tired by 3 or 4 am., it is not a problem to sleep with the whompin and thumpin -- it actually can lull like a mantra. It usually rains, so be ready for that. I would miss a lot if not for camping. Yes, there are moments of survival skills but that's camping. It is a 24 hr party, so why go away? You can bring everything on the plane with careful planning. Carry on the heavier items like tent and airbed and tarps and such. Have a plan how to keep your stuff out of the rain with no car. My husband and I bring 2 small tents (no car, 2 of us, so we feel ok about that) and keep our bags in one of them. Just find "mini" versions of everything -- fans, soft ice-chests, chairs, table etc. Bring less clothes than you think -- just make sure there is something for rain and something warm to sleep in. You can buy some hippy clothes there if need. There is lots of good food! there is food inside and outside the venue. I have found very healthy, reasonably priced food. My husband and I can split a huge vegie burrito -- who wants to eat a ton and get all weighted-down and hot? Bonnaroo WANTS you to have fun, every year I have run across people who work for 'roo handing out some free food, granola in the am and sandwiches in camp with a disco show at mid afternoon. There are sometimes religious people with a tent handing out fresh fruit and such. There are LOTS of kind people. Have fun. (by the way, tent camping without cars is very close to the venue but I hear (haha) it's loud). BONNAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

If your wife & friend have not looked into hotels yet, they need to SOON if u wanna go that route. All the super close ones are full by now and the longer you wait, the longer your drive to a hotel will be (along with a possible price hike)

I hit up a Murfreesboro Walmart every year, and they almost always have stocked shelves. They know how busy it gets leading up to Roo and how much money they'll make- they plan accordingly and order plenty of everything.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Bonnaroo is a weekend full of things I HATE. Extreme heat, filth, tons of people/crowded areas, camping... but it's by far the best weekend of the year for me. If your wife and her friend can go with an open mind and accept that it's not a particularly comfortable weekend, they will be able to have a blast. The first time I got to bonnaroo, they told me where to park, then I got out of my car and looked around and thought "omfg what was I thinking? I can't do this." Then I realized everyone around me was smiling ear to ear, helping each other build what would be their home for the next 4 days and I instantly relaxed and left real life behind for a bit. So don't worry that they aren't the most outgoing. Roo will bring it out of them. Tell her to read around on these boards a bit so she knows what to expect. It will make a big difference. www.inforoo.com/thread/25315/arriving-roo-ga-comprehensive-guide www.inforoo.com/thread/25441/health-thread-mother-wants-read www.inforoo.com/thread/4892/girly-fashion-thread?page=284 www.inforoo.com/thread/24585/useful-threads-first-timers
I say they should jump right in and do camping instead of a hotel. It's a really big part of the experience. They will want a shade tent (e-z up), a tent to sleep in, and camp chairs. Camelbaks are a great idea too. Check the airline fees on checking things like an ezup because it may be cheaper than buying one last minute at walmart. She could get a small tent and camp chairs into a big duffel bag and check that as well.

I fly in from Seattle and bring my gear with me. A 3 person tent, sleeping bag though just for cushion, sleeping pad, light weight shade shelter, collapsible cooler. With two of you thats easy to share the weight. I bring a wheelie beast and then use a backpack, larger than a school one, like UL45 for my clothes and carry onto the plane. Then buy any food, water, snacks drinks on the ground in Nashville. You can also rent gear from REI.
The key is practice setting up camp ahead of time so they know what to do once they are on the ground. They will be fine as long as they are comfortable camping. Otherwise tent city or hotel and then they don't have to worry about it. Going nonstop is impossible really. Naps have to happen after the sun goes down because its too hot. I will nap during Kanye so I have energy for the late night shows. But have them read all the threads above since they are going and such.
didn't read all the replies, but have pondered this for a few days. What if they bought a tent and an ez-up to put over it and stayed in Groop Camping? That way it's a reserved spot, others could probably assist in cooking gear if needed and they would have a better knowledge of how far their walk would be to centeroo. may even make it easier for them if they want to drive into town in the morning or something. the only other "camping" gear they need would be a cooler.
depending on how much of a health nut she is, there are plenty of food options at bonnaroo. vegan, vegetarian, etc. there's also a whole foods and trader joes in nashville if she wants to buy stuff like that before heading to the farm.
if she/you want to ship stuff to nashville, i suppose you could use my address as I'm about 1.5 miles off of I-24 and 10 minutes from the airport.

You can no longer add groop spots
but for the sake of educating me, can you "transfer" a spot to someone? say someone signed up for 24 spots, but only have 20 committed because 4 had to back out, could that leader use those 4 spots for folks who want in at the last minute?
