I'm considering walking in this year…
Anybody ever done it? Would the Manchester Walmart be a good place for me to get dropped off and start my journey? What route do you take to walk in? What tollbooth would I need to go to? What time do the tollbooths open to foot traffic?
You could start at Walmart if you wanted but when I did it, my friend dropped me off right at the gate. I'm not sure what the name if the road is we took... but I know he turned by a gas station and went down some back road (I'm terrible at directions, sorry!). That year I was meeting friends there and they already had all my things. So I literally walked in with a backpack and my wristband. I slid right through check in and nobody searched me. That year I went in on Wednesday around 9:30 but I imagine that whatever time the gates open, you'll be able to get in.

Last year the Toll Booths opened at 3pm to foot traffic and cars. I worked the West Tollbooth (Bushy Branch Rd) and there were a lot of people walking in last year. I was pretty surprised. If you get dropped off at the Walmart on you might be able to hitch a ride in with someone. But, if you do this on Wed, you'll probably end up in Pod 1 (which isn't really a bad thing). Also, there is a Toll designated for walkers to pass through so you don't have to wait with all the cars. Just pass those idling cars right on by and someone will direct you to the right spot

I'm guessing that he took you to the West Tollbooth off of McMinnville Hwy, where you turn by the Kangaroo gas station and make your way to Bushy Branch… That is the tollbooth I've gone through every other year, so I'm familiar with the route the walk will take me. Thanks!

I'll probably get dropped off at the Kangaroo and hike it from there. Don't want to hitch it in because I want to avoid the Pod 1 quarantine. Thanks for the info!!!

YES thank you for responding. I've been desperately trying to figure this out. If you enter on foot, are you allowed to walk right on to tent only? No matter how early you arrive starting at 3:00 (or whatever time they open this year?)

Yes, as soon as gates open you can go directly to Tent Only if you are walking in.

THANK YOU! I've been dreaming about getting into TO for some time and hoping that was the case! 4th Roo but never considered it before this year now that my GF finally has a buddy going and I can do some of my own things. So stoked it's getting harder to sleep every night. Woooooooooooo!

Thank you! Can't wait to be back on the farm!!!
I should clarify......if you walk in thru the East Tollbooth, you'll be held up in Pod 1 until the powers that be end the quarantine. So, walk in thru the West tollbooth (or Highway?) to allow direct access to Tent Only

Sounds right, west tollbooth however you get there. East tollbooth would be alot longer of a walk.
Also I'm thinking if you're walking -even on the grass- along the highway you're gonna get yelled at by the donut eaters. I know there isn't supposed to be any picking up or dropping off there and you cant really be a pedestrian on interstates.

My plan is to get dropped off at the Kangaroo gas station close to the west toll-booth, and hike with my wagon (one of those all-terrain jobbies) from there… hopefully I don't get a flat in any of my tires during the walk, because that could suck. The tires have seen better days after several years of being left out in the sun to crack and rot. I'm gonna take it for a walk loaded down around my neighborhood to make sure it can handle the weight, and alternatively look at my local hardware store for replacement tires. I really don't want to buy a new wagon.

One more question. What is the protocol if you travel in on I-24 headed East and your only exits open on arrival are the ones like 5 miles before and after the Kangaroo? Am I taking for granted that the car dropping you off is not bonnaroo bound and doesn't have stuff strapped on top and behind? Will the police allow your ride to exit and drop you off in the right place or were you taking 41 or 55 into town so you're guaranteed a legal dropoff point? I-24 or the ramps are not a legal dropoff point and I'm thinking if a loaded down car would be denied stopping for this or get yelled at or worse.
Or do you just make sure and come in on a non-interstate highway? Last year we came in on 41 S from Murph. to go around the fatal wreck on 24. Once on the outer rd to cross 55 and trying to be clever and hit the west tollbooth the cars backed up about a mile and we sat for about 45 minutes before hitting the Kangaroo....then of course they directed us back WEST on 24 again to go in a BIG circle only to go in on the east tollbooth. I remember being so devastated I could throw a rock to bushy branch but they wouldn't let us turn left there. Maybe it would be a good idea to do that again so I know there will BE a dropoff point.
