So how much dry ice will I need for a 62 quart cooler? I also plan on freezing bottled water to put on top of the dry ice--just don't know how much I need... Thanks in advance for the help!
when you use dry ice, put it at the top of your cooler wrapped in a towel. colder air is denser, and will sink to the bottom of the cooler. so put your frozen bottles UNDER the dry ice to keep them frozen longer. last time we bought dry ice for roo we got about 20lbs for a 40qt cooler. keep in mind though that dry ice will keep stuff really really cold (assuming you aren't constantly opening the cooler). don't put a lot of food in the cooler that you dont want to freeze, because it probably will.
I just called around about dry ice. One of the places here said if you bring the ice chests in, he can figure out how much you'll need if you have an idea of how much you want crammed into the ice chest food/drink wise.
I just line the bottom of all of my coolers with one row of dry ice and never had a problem. I'd rather not have to touch it and move it to get to things under it, so keeping it on the bottom of the cooler makes more sense for me and the middle bottles have always remained frozen and the stuff on top of that have always stayed cold.
I take quilts and cover my chests and I also brought a strip of insulation last year and covered them. also...be sure and move them out of the sun during the day as the sun moves.
I'm a big advocate of dry ice for Bonnaroo. I've gone 6 years now and taken 30 lbs of dry ice per cooler each year. I believe they are about 50 qt coolers, the most common sized ones. I've used pellets and blocks. 2 of those years the dry ice was gone by Sunday but I think that had to do with extreme heat years and getting in and out of the cooler more often. I put the dry ice on the bottom of the cooler, layer a towel in there and then a layer or 2 of water. the water will freeze so I alternate the frozen bottles with non frozen so there is always cold water. I also use the frozen bottles in smaller coolers and such instead of buying ice to keep food cold. Hope that helps!!

This guy knows whats up. I sat and vegetated every morning while my neighbors walked to buy ice for their coolers. My cooler was cold Wednesday to Sunday afternoon with a layer of dry ice in the bottom wrapped in towels and ice cubes layered over it.

A 3-4" layer of dry ice covering the bottom of the cooler to answer your question.
