They do accept debit cards but they will put an additional hold on your card, usually in the amount of $500. Meaning, make sure you have enough cash in your account so that you can spare $500 for the duration of the rental. They will release those funds when you return the car back safe and sound.
fwstringer and tj I just got off the phone with "Roscoe" from Thrifty Car Rental.
He said you can use your debit card, and there will be a $150 security deposit put down. That deposit will be refunded after you return the car (he said it takes about 3-5 business days).
I asked about using a credit card of someone who is not the main driver, and he said no, they can't accept that, the CC must be from the primary driver.

Thank you so so much for doing that. You just saved me about $30 in calls. I will repay you that in beer and eternal gratitude.
And we can easily rent the car. Loads of places were saying that they don't accept debit cards, we were getting scared.
Again, thank you so much for your help. Its incredible.

You, my dear are a life saver. Are you going to be at the Nashville meet up on the Tuesday? If you are we will buy you many a drink, if you're not, we will give you many a drink at the brunch!

You guys are very welcome! I'm still at work so the long-distance call is on them
I'll be at the meet up in East Nashville later on Tuesday evening but not at the dinner at South Street. Hope to see you both in EN!
PS. Roscoe also said that you guys should bring your round-trip ticket with you to the counter and it would eliminate some kind of fee (I think it was dealing with insurance/liability, not the security deposit).

JHOinTN is such a sweetheart. I was laughing my azz off that there is really a guy named "Roscoe" at the Thrifty Car Rental in Knoxville, Tn. Man, it just doesn't get more southern than that.

Yes, you just made one Northerner literally LOL. My time in the South has been brief, and mostly filled with joy, but a few moments have really entertained me, like this. The waitress telling us exactly where to buy real moonshine and which cousin to ask for, as she was serving us grits we didn't order or expect, was another. It was a delightful experience, and I discovered that I like grits.
I bloody love Inforoo. You are amazing people. I am so excited to spend 5 days with you all.
It really is great. After missing 2010 I wasn't sure how I'd figure out getting back to the farm and travel and all that since I was coming alone 2011. More than a few inforoosters offered help and my trip was made so much easier.
