Our governor Bill Haslam is much more conservative than his Democratic predecessor. Where before the Tennessee Highway Patrol only investigated and reacted to problems, since Haslam took office the THP has been more aggressively looking for things that aren't a problem until they find them.
I like to party just as much as probably anyone on this board but fucked up people have no business behind the wheel of a car. That being said, random searches are just wrong.

A lot of times a police offer pulls someone over and says "do you mind if I search your car?" And you're allowed to say, "It's not ok for you to search my car." But once you consent to the search, whether they had probable cause is irrelevant.
Granted, if they see your bag of weed on the center console, they have probable cause and can search you whether you consent or not. The point is, don't be consenting...because a lot of the time it's like arresting yourself.

I have a friend, this will be his first roo, who is insisting on getting drunk before/during the ride down. I told him that I'm not smoking during the ride so your not drinking.I keep telling him I won't allow him to drink in the car So now he wants me to stop every little bit so he can chug a forty or some shit... I just don't understand why he can't wait the 5 hours! Bonnaroo is party central, and he last thing I want is to roll up on one of these things, cops smell booze(even though I would be completely sober) and start searching my car. So fucking frustrating...

You need to either set your friend straight, leave him home, or prepare to go to jail. Not saying it will happen, but don't surprised when it does.

It's not worth you going to jail over. Plus, with this complete lack of restraint and common sense he could run the risk of becoming a statistic on the farm or at the very least pissing off a lot of people. What use is he going to be setting up camp if he's shitfaced drunk?

If it's your car, you hold all the cards. I'd tell him now that he should start looking for an alternative ride if he needs to drink on the way down.
Last year I bailed on my ride bc he insisted on bringing stuff down in his car, and since it was his car I couldn't argue much.

I'm going to talk to him again today. This has been an ongoing argument since he decided he wanted to go and I do not like to argue at all, seriously! His argument is that if he just drinks before we leave or when we stop for gas that the cops can't do anything about that. I keep reiterating that I dont want the car to smell of anything, because I dont want them to have ANY reason to search the car if we do end up getting pulled over. I feel like his isn't an outrageous request and he just keeps it fucking going! Guess I'm going to have to lay down the law...i hate being like that though. Especially right before roo. Oh yea, not to mention I just got my license back from a dui two weeks ago, so I'm super sketched about the booze thing...out of 4 years of going, this is the most I have ever been stressed out about the drive. If the roles were switched I wouldn't even think about arguing over something like this. Seems so simple.

Does he know how awful drinking on a road trip is? Can't move, can't pee, car sickness, and a person whose main focus is the road. If he wants to get fucked up, just give him an ambien. All your problems are solved.
