So, quadcopters are pretty fucking cool. For those that don't know, they're little RC helicopters that may or may not have a camera attached. Before the festival, I was talking with a friend about them and how cool they would be at festivals, and how it was weird that they haven't taken off in popularity there. Then boom, I saw one at Elton John this year. I'm really excited about the cool pictures and video people can get from quadcopters.
But then the more I think about it, the more interesting it gets. If more people start bringing them in (and I'm sure it's already against policy), what kind of safety issue does it create? All it takes is one ass-hat to pilot one into Lionel Richie's face during a performance to turn things sour. And if not that, it would be an ass-hat move if someone just started piloting one around on stage and shoving cameras a little too much in the performers faces. But out in the field, it would make for a really nice video.
What does Bonnaroo do if this becomes a problem? Do they put out signal jammers? Do those things even exist? If they do, does it create another safety issue if one flies within range of a signal jammer and just falls out of the sky and lands on someone's skull? We all know shit will find its way into the venue anyway if Bonnaroo says its against policy. Do they have a way of tracking the pilot and stopping them?
Interesting times we're living in.
Anyone with knowledge on this stuff, please give me the deets.
We prefer the word quadcopter, drone has such a negative vibe to it. (we don't kill people with ours)
I'm sure they will be banned next year. I was able to bring mine into day parking all 4 days no questions asked, and flew it 2 days over day parking. I would love to have flew centeroo, but if something happened (like it crashed) it could be bad. I hope it was an official one that was flying around over elton john (it was the same model as mine, so who knows).
The only way to track it is to see where it lands really.
What is funny is Bonnaroo (and Ashley Capps) retweeted a picture i took from my quadcopter on Thursday.
I have one of these for photography, and really wanted to bring it. The only reason I didn't was the complete lack of room in the car.
Honestly, I would not have considered using it DURING the shows, simply because of the potential safety issues. I wanted to get some aerial photos of the festival camping areas and the overall scene. Flying low over crowds just seems to present too many potential hazards.
I assumed that the one at Elton John was from a newspaper or other media outlet.

I know nothing about these things, but I did hear on Radio Bonnaroo while waiting to get in that there would be some of them this year taking pictures. I also saw the one at EJ as well as one at Cake. I would guess that they are owned by someone that was affiliated with the production of Bonnaroo in some way, and not just a random attendee.

There was a guy flying one underneath the tent at King Khan and The Shrines. He was far back outside the tent and kept flirting with the range of the signal, going as far into the tent as he could; when it started to fall out of the sky due to lack of signal, he quickly pulled it back. One of these contraptions is going to land on someone.
Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go buy Ben-Gay and pants I can hike up to my armpits.

How expensive are they? I would think it wouldn't be in the price range to make it a common purchase, meaning that the people who do purchase it will more likely be conscious of safety procedures (as everyone in this thread is). How heavy are they were they to go out of range and fall on someone?

Was your car THAT packed? those things aren't THAT big, are they?
The quadcopter I have is 18" x 18" x 8" (I think it is the same model referenced earlier, and I know it is the same as the one flying over Elton from the lights). It's not too big, but neither is my car. And, I really didn't want to smash it in like I would a sleeping bag. I could have left it on my passenger's lap ... but I'm pretty sure security would have asked questions about that.

They are awesome. I saw several of them all weekend. I also saw the one at elton, and I also wondered "what if".
Im sure they'll be banned in centroo, and security will likely be more perceptive next year.
Along the same lines though, the lanterns, I'm not sure how liberal they'll be with those. People were trying to hit them, if they went down in the audience, or on stage....
Was so worried someone was going to hit an artist in the eye with a laser.
Lots of things that can go wrong. Just hope people police one another
After Kanye there were a couple of guys hunched behind my car as we were walking back. Couldn't tell what was up at first and realized they about to launch one of these. They sort ignored our drunken questions and quickly got moving. We were camped in VIP. Also during Artic Monkeys I saw one flying around that seemed to be avoiding the helicopters and then returned to VIP campground an landed. I would like to know how many were not official.
