my mom was a ballerina, and listened/danced to lots and lots of classical music when I was younger. She played Kronos Quartet all the time. They played on Dave Matthews Before These Crowded Streets and that just cemented them as "cool" to me. I didn't realize people were into them outside of the "classical" scene...

Darren Aronofsky movies is where I got into them. Clint Mansell composes it then they play the living shit out of it.

I don't remember how I found out about them... but my first Kronos Quartet CD purchase was 25 years ago: "Winter Was Hard." I remember the year, because I had just transferred to an arts high school, and that was one of 3 CDs I brought with me the first day. Ended up seeing them perform 'Black Angels" live the following year; a truly fantastic performance.
The first time I heard them was Pieces of Africa sometime in the early 90's. I had just started working at a record store and needed something for a Saturday morning hangover. I went through the Classical promos until I decided on that.

that's actually the first album I consciously knew of
Just woke up from my second Big Ears related dream in a month. First time was looking at a poster and last night was leaving the Tennessee Theater after Swans. I'm gonna be a sad panda if they aren't there.

Very excited to find out who it is!! :-) Been listening to the new Flying Lotus and it's making me want to see him during Big Ears. Can March get here any faster?
