Something worth discussing, long time fans are generally very happy with the new record and are excited about the fact that there is apparently another album of similar material coming out in a year. The Waterfall has restored faith with fans that has been lost since Circuital and to a lesser degree Evil Urges came out. But, will this record (or the next) do anything to elevate the bands status to the non-fans?

I personally don't think so. Me and CPK were talking about this the other night when they were on Fallon. We both think MMJ won't really get any "bigger" than they are at this point. They have their rabid & loyal fanbase, but can't see them making a major jump in mainstream popularity.

Not sure. There is some speculation on the MMJ Boards about a quote that mentions songs being more "dance music"
Sessions for "The Waterfall" resulted in plenty of (probably weird) dance music, but James felt it was better served on its own album. He wondered if first putting out a more rock-oriented collection might not appeal to old-school fans, while a second album would be a bonus round for the more adventurous.
"It may be a pointless experiment, but I was curious to see what would happen," he said. "I thought it would be cool to have one that didn't have any dance- or soul-based stuff on it, and then follow it up with one that was completely dance- and soul-based."
We'll see if that happens. Maybe they get a big hit. Maybe it's a big clunker that doesn't work out.

Me too man, I need to get a Friday ticket to Gov. Ball. if anything. Hopefully they'll have another run at The Cap or somewhere in NYC in the fall/winter.

Welp, I decided to book the flight to Chicago. $95 RT, staying Wednesday - Saturday. I don't have tix to the Wed or Thurs shows, or a place to stay, but those seem like minor details.
I watched the KCRW stream last night. They sounded pretty tight especially on Compound Fracture, Spring, and Tropics. Those are definitely 3 of my top 4 tracks from the album too along with In its Infancy

I waited until the live stream last night to listen to the waterfall, in order to appreciate it from that perspective. Everyone on here is giving this record a lot of praise, and as a fan I have to say this record live moves me 60% of the time, but the rest I found a bit mundane. After work today I'll pick up the studio album and listen to it as well as the live stream from last night in order to appreciate it more, but so far there is more fat than meat for me. There are traces of it still moves found in a few songs on this record that blew me away, but some I found to be lacking in the momentum and energy that I have found in much of their early and more recent work. Does anyone feel this way who watched the stream and know the record, or am I going to have a different take once I listen to the studio?

Each time I listen to it a little bit more. That's really how I've felt about MMJ as a whole though ever since I started listening them. Went from meh > mmm > ok, I like this > these guys are good > this is great > WOW! The album has been similar, though admittedly a little less WOW. Keeps growing on me though.

I've listened to the album a few times now and I like it, but the reviews I've glanced over seem to be calling it a return to form, and I suppose its more straight forward rock then their past few efforts, but I still wouldn't call it a "rocking" record, which is really what I want. From my perception there are still a lot of low key songs. Maybe I'm just not listening loud enough.
And nothing wrong with low key songs, but I'm not hearing anything on this record that approaches the beauty of "Bermuda Highway" or "Death Is The Easy Way (sleezy pay)" or "Golden".

I agree with you that this album isn't really a rockin album, but one of the things I love about it is that I feel like every song on the album try's to conveys a message, and try's to connect with the listener (not that their other albums haven't).
Also, I think Get The Point approaches the same level of beauty as the three songs you mentioned. I forgot how much I love death is the easy way though!

I think this album just comes together neater than their past three albums. It has a much clearer direction from start to finish compared to the attention-deficit moments of Z and Evil urges, etc. This is a great fucking album.

Some of these songs are things I'm really connecting with. The "love/heartbreak" theme is definitely strong throughout. People splitting up/wanting different things. Some good shit all around. I still need to do a fully focused listening session (with lyrics) but I'm waiting for my vinyl to arrive for that. So far I'm really loving this album. It's hard to pick out songs I don't like.
Personally the "return to form" reviews don't really mean much to me because I thoroughly enjoyed Circuital. However, this is the first MMJ album outside of ISM that clicked on the first listen for me. I loved Big Decisions and Spring the very first day they were released, and several other songs blew me away at first listen (Tropics, Compound Fracture, & Only Memories Remain). In Its Infancy has grown steadily on me and is now one of my favorite tracks. All the others continue to grow on me as well with the exception of Thin Line. That's really the only song on the album that does absolutely nothing for me at this point.

Man if they just switched MMJ and Mumford, it would be perfect. MMJ could pull a Pearl Jam '08 and play for like 3 hours. Kind of a dick move that Mumford is headlining over them, given their history with Roo.

not very many bands could headline over Mumford, certainly not MMJ. It would be a dick move for bonnaroo to give Mumford +co anything less than a headlining spot.
I see where you're coming from though, and I do think the least they could do is give them a LN spot. this day and age, with the computers n the edm's there is a lot less room for rock acts to play LN. alas
