Blackhawks being spanked tonight. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
Once they scored that first goal in the 3rd to make it a two point game I went to bed. It was my first day back at work and I was just dead glad I couldn't make it up to watch them get crushed. Tuey better be on point tomorrow for the game I'll be at. They just weren't playing well.
I know Crow had a great season but the team seems to play so much better with Darling on net. It would be interesting to see the pace of the game if he got a start.
No! This is exactly why it was crucial. If we didn't we would drop from picking Eichel to... Noah Hanifin? If the top two picks weren't elite it would have been pointless. Arizona is evidence of what a failure to complete the tank means.
How does that lottery work? They draw for #1 pick and the worse your season was the more chances you get in the draw?
The fourteen teams that didn't make the playoffs are all in the lottery. The worst team had a twenty percent chance at the top pick. The second worst had a thirteen and a half and so on down to I think one and a half percent.
The winner of the lottery gets the top pick. If it's not the worst team, everybody's draft slot moves one spot so last place can't pick any worse than second.
In this case Buffalo was in 30th, Arizona was in 29th and Edmonton was 28th. Edmonton won and picked first. Buffalo shifted to second. Arizona shifted to third. The rest of the draft order is unchanged.
This draft was crucial because there were two elite players so finishing last was the only way to guarantee getting one of them.
There were some far out theories of how a new format could work. The one I like is as follows:
Once a team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they would then begin to accumulate points that would go towards the possibility of drafting 1st overall. There could be different variables put in place to keep it fair, but the general idea is to do away with teams tanking. This would at least minimize the time period of which a team would aim to tank the season, and not allow them to dump key assets, as they would need to win games in order to get a higher pick. There could also be more incentives put in place to make the playoffs.
I find it all a very sad state of affairs that pride is not enough to encourage teams to do well. Too many team and too much money.

I like the points accumulated after elimination approach. I also like the idea of the worst four teams entering a tournament with the winner getting the top pick.
I think if teams were throwing games, it would be an issue. (Arizona was pretty damn close with their missing the nets, stopping pucks from crossing the opponent's goal line and terrible goaltending.)
What several teams did was realize that they weren't close to good enough to complete for a Stanley Cup and set out to reboot. Trade off pending UFA's for young talent and draft picks and build a winner. It certainly helped that this year there were two elite prospects at the top of the draft, though.
(Note, the Sabres did the same last year for much more average talent.)
Rangers gave this away. No excuse for the fastest team in the league to be standing around or gliding all game. If they were skating pens wouldn't have been able to keep up
Also, people should be watching the Ducks Jets game tonight if you want to see how hockey should be played. Game one was an all out war.
Trying really hard not to be offended by your assertion that we don't know how hockey "should" be played.
not my implication at all. Just commending both teams for how they've been playing. Each series so far has been great hockey. But the ducks and jets had just been the greatest.
And just wait till the series shifts to Winnipeg. That crowd wi be just as loud, if not louder than the bell centre in Montreal, with 5000 less attendees.
The draft lottery was the least exciting thing hockey has ever seen.
They should have done it like the actual lottery, where they have four chambers with numbers 1 thru 14 in each. Then a ball from each chamber is drawn. Whatever combination comes up, the winning team has the corresponding set of numbers.
Would of been better than watching a guy name off 11 teams staying in the same draft spot.
Pens Rangers we saw the refs calling nearly everything, and the Ducks Jets we see the refs totally swallow their whistles. The NHL really needs to get these refs into s room and get some fucking consistency going.

Took my niece to her first ever hockey game today. Couldn't have been a better game to be her first. United Center also had an awesome beer selection and self service beer machines. A definite upgrade from last year.
