He's an American 17 year old that plays for Dortmund, one of the best German/European soccer teams. He didn't play much till the end of the season when there wasn't much left to play for, but he scored a couple goals for them... and he's 17!! And then yeah he's been getting some playing time with the US men's national team and scored a goal the other day.
I was mostly joking, but in terms of prospects he's definitely the US's number one right now.

When they're good they're probably my favorite underdog team to root for, especially now with an American in their ranks. And yeah I think Gotze should leave if he doesn't get time at Bayern next year with a new coach. He's still a great player but that team is so stacked.

Can't leave a team I've been loyal to since the late 90s. Rangers/Pens doesn't do it but this does?! I get they are bigger rivals in their respective sport then the hockey, but my follow level is much higher for hockey.

Didn't expect Brazil and Uruguay to f up this badly even without their respective top players. Brazil got hosed, but still, they only scored against Haiti.
I really don't understand the hate for Klinsmann. We played the best team in the world without some of our most important players, and on a technical level, every one of their players is better than every one of our players.

Not start quacking Wondolowski, for one. Pulisic and Nagbe were guys who were obvious plays. If we are playing the best team in the world, why not take a chance with youth instead of an old-ass MLS guy who has no future with the team? It makes no sense. I'm not a big tactics guy but leaving the midfield our 2 vs. their 3 was terrible and it showed in their dominance of possession. I think Yedlin plays out of position for USMNT. Going back to the World Cup, he attempted that entire tournament to make Mike Bradley something he's not (a #10) and one of our 2-3 best players had a bad tournament as a result.
I've been a Klinsi supporter for awhile but I can't be anymore. He hasn't delivered on his promises of exciting, attacking soccer and if anything we are backtracking in that respect. It doesn't really matter, Sunil has a huge hard-on for Klinsi.

I'm kind of with you, i don't think there was much Klinsmann could've done with missing two key players. But man the effort just looked bad out there. Maybe Argentina is just THAT good, but we looked pretty atrocious.
One player I consistently feel does not show up to big games, is Bradley. Maybe he is just always over matched in the midfield, but every big game i've seen him in i consistently just see mistakes from him.
And i know we can't just let one man mark Messi for an entire 90 minutes but the dude was consistently finding space in our defense and i just don't get how you can leave the best player in the world open with such regularity. Happy we got to the semi's but that game was kind of embarrassing to watch.

Klinsmann plays Kyle Beckerman for the national team. That's enough reason to question his sanity. He is so bereft of quality, it's nuts. He can't pass, he's slow, gives the ball away, doesn't stay in his position...

Well, I'd say the USA v. Colombia 3rd place game was a perfect example of why the average male American hates soccer. We saw a lethargic USA squad scrambling in the back every time Colombia came forward, no goals and few good chances created offensively, players dribbling and losing the ball in the box, Colombians flopping everywhere with some of the worst acting I've seen and the ref buying every bit of it. They looked like a 5 year old team on offense - when they got to within 25 yards of the goal everyone just funneled to the center with their heads down.
My favorite play was at 80 minutes or so when Cameron collided with a Colombian at the touch line near midfield, sending the other player tumbling out of bounds. Seeing him get up, look around for a call, step back onto the pitch, then lay down was great. And was he the same guy who faked a knee injury in the center of the pitch, got stretchered off, and was fine 10 seconds later? And the guy who was given a yellow near the end, acted hurt momentarily, then got up and immediately baited Orozco into a red (which the ref also got wrong)?
Maybe I'm just extra salty about this one because one of my bosses is Colombian and will claim bragging rights over me forever now, but I've seen enough of Orozco, Wood, Zardes and JJ for a lifetime, and I'll never accept Cameron. That's not to say that anyone else was impressive. Pulisic is intriguing, and I'd like to see more of Nagbe and Castillo. Klinsmann probably saved his job by making the semis but but his squad may have put it in jeopardy again with that effort.

I don't know if Jones was our best player in the tournament since I was only free to watch two and a half games, and I know I'm in the minority on him, but all I've ever seen him do is give the ball away and be late to 50/50 balls. I'll agree that the defense was much less of a problem, tonight at least since the offense was so anemic, but I thought they looked disorganized. The match stats were all pretty even and Colombia didn't create a ton of chances, but they did fail to capitalize on a couple of very good ones. Not sold on Wood, never liked Cameron (you saw the 2014 Cup, right?) and still see him constantly having to recover from being out of position.
Expecting to win is not a problem - that's what fans do. We're constantly told that they are building and about how confident they are, yet they never reach a top level internationally. I refuse to accept 4th place at Copa America as good enough, especially when we didn't have to face the likes of Brazil, Mexico, or Uruguay. I'm not one of the folks saying Klinsmann is the problem or that he should go, but I'm not seeing real progress either, and he was definitely on the hot seat going in. Muddling along, struggling in a weak region, is not overachieving. We've had good, young players playing over seas since the early 90's, so when are they ever going to produce? We've had great goalkeeping over the years but consistently mediocre play at almost every other position.
I'm certainly being grouchy but I don't think I'm that wrong. I don't expect to constantly be the best at everything, but being legitimately good once in a while would be nice. I'm not the kind of fan who just watches but doesn't care about the result. We play other sports but we also have 300+ million people in our country, which is way more than any other semi-competitive country has to pick from, so the NBA and the NFL aren't excuses.

Brexit will have a lot of unforeseen implications, which could include the sports world. Foreign investments and sponsorship could become more difficult and more costly, as well as player transfers. Will foreign players have difficulties securing work permits in England, which can already be a pain? Could UEFA remove UK teams, or disband and reform without them? Could there be a Champions League without EPL clubs? Jeez...
It will be interesting to see how the pound and the euro are affected as the breakup progresses, if it does. There's already a call for another referendum (a do-over vote???), Scottish independence looks more likely than ever, and we could even see Irish reunification or Northern Ireland go independent.
This is going to be a crazy, uncertain situation for years to come. Lots more questions than answers now. Will NATO be impacted? Will the US cozy up to Europe more, will US-UK ties be strained, strengthened, or unchanged, and will Russia and/or China be emboldened to make friends or enemies in the West? UEFA kicking British clubs out would be baseless.
If that were the case, a case could be made for kicking Serbia, Russia, Montenegro, Norway, Iceland, Macedonia and a whole host of other associations just to be consistent.
Now, work permits and the placement of UK players will be affected, certainly. There is already talk of Real Madrid having to move Bale in the near future b/c having him would push the club over their allocation of non-EU players.
I won't discuss the other stuff because this isn't the politics thread, but I'd be willing to put money down on an August 2017 deadline for a Scottish Independence Referendum II: Edinburgh Boogaloo.
