Does anyone know of any smaller festivals in terms of crowds, that still attract good headliners? I like Bonnaroo, Hangout, Coachella is on my bucket list, but something more affordable and not too commercialized. I hear mountain oasis and moogfest are nice.

probably depends on your definition of good headliners. I'd look into pretty much anything at Spirit of Suwanee music park. I have yet to encounter someone that wasn't enchanted with the venue, and they have multiple smaller fests there throughout the year, like Bear Creek, Wanee, and Hulaween. None of these are going to book Paul McCartney or anything, but I always find loads of excellent artists on the lineups of these fests. Fests at Spirit of Suwanee do tend towards the crunchier side of things.
My favorite has long been Catskill Chill. They cap attendance at 5,000 and the headliners the years I have went were Umphreys in 2011, Yonder Mountain String Band in 2012, Meters with Page McConnell in 2013 and Yonder again this year. They always deliver an excellent top to bottom lineup imo.

If you're on the west coast there's some really good ones to choose from, listed from small small to not Coachella/Bonnaroo big: Burgerama, Beach Goth, Eagle Rock music festival, Make Music Pasadena, Desert Daze, Culture Collide Festival, Lightning in a Bottle, Hard Summer, Treasure Island Music, FYF Fest, Life is Beautiful, Sasquatch, Outside Lands.
LouFest (St. Louis) has been pretty solid the last few years (Arctic Monkeys and OutKast in 2014) and isn't crowded at all. I think I read that the management is changing for 2015, not sure how that is going to affect things.
Where are you located and why kind of music are you looking for? Pretty much anywhere you're going to find really cool, small jam fests. In Ohio we have The Werk Out, Dark Star Jubilee, Summerdance, Hookahville(s) (they're held like 3 times a year), Nelsonville and loads more... Nelsonville may be kinda what you're looking for. They had Avetts & Dinosaur Jr as headliners this year. Another good "smaller" (small compared to Bonnaroo but still pretty large compared to what I've listed so far.) one is Forecastle. I went for the first time this year and absolutely loved it. As of now I plan on definitely going next year.

In SC but willing to travel anywhere depending on the lineup. Any sort of music really I'm open to experiencing new things. Jam bands, bluegrass, shoegaze. psychedelic, classic rock, some rap. How was the forecastle? Hate that I missed Beck and Avey Tare's Slasher flicks!

You should check out Wanee for sure or anything at Suwanee. It's not all that far from you. You would probably enjoy Austin Psych Fest or Wakarusa also.
My favorite, Hopscotch Music Festival. About a third of the way down the line-up, you really have to start doing research on the bands playing. It's in Raleigh, so it's a city/hotel fest, the $150 price-tag makes it is so worth it in the end.

They tell us "Rock'n'roll is the devil's music." Well, let's say we know that rock is the devil's music, and we know that it is, for sure … At least he fuckin' jams! If it's a choice between eternal Hell and good tunes, and eternal Heaven and New Kids on the fuckin' Block … I'm gonna be surfin' on the lake of fire, rockin' out.
Since AllGood is moving back to West Virginia you should check it out. My three trips to Marvins Mountaintop were amazing.
it's not at Marvin's but yea, All Good is great. Sad they moved it from ohio. Though I see why the did. But it was like 20 mins from me which was great.
Floydfest, in Floyd, VA. Not too far, while Floyd is really not too close to anything.
I have never been, but I like this line up for next year. Drive By Truckers, Shovels & Rope, Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers. Greensky Bluegrass and Sam Bush.

Merlefest... its been a small thing put on by a community college here in North Carolina for a couple decades... its bluegrass, so don't expect much more diversity than a little folk or country... but still a great time.

Not sure why I didn't think of that one. Wilkesboro is less than an hour from me. My son worked there a couple of years ago. This year's headliners are Marshall Tucker Band, Bela Fleck, Del McCoury.
]From my experience in 2013, it was lots of redneck families who were there for the purpose of spending an extra long weekend (Wednesday to Monday) getting trashed outdoors and not supervising their stupid, shitty children.
Given the proximity to Roanoke, this is a fair statement.
That's been home to me on and off for the past 30 years or so. I make it out to be a lot worse than it is. There are some cool places that I do miss. If you need any help, feel free to pm me.

I went in 2013. I volunteered. The whole thing was the worst clusterfuck I've ever witnessed. They had some serious "growing pains" going on, so they reduced the cap in 2014 and upped the prices so it became harder to get tickets.

That's a bummer. Looks like they have a solid line up this year.
Here in my hometown there is a SMALLer festival that is really hitting its stride in year 2. This last years headliners include Aesop Rock, XXYYXX, Immortal Technique, Baths, and Neon Indian. Its got hip hop roots and much smaller than most of these other festivals but i know that the guys that run it want to be a destination festival here in the next couple of years.
