I don't care what the critics say, but Mad Men was incredible this season. One of my absolute favorite seasons of any television show I have watched.
1. Mad Men 2. True Detective 3. Girls 4. Veep 5. Game of Thrones 6. New Girl (not so much the end of last season, but definitely this current season) 7. Bob's Burgers 8. The Leftovers 9. Silicon Valley 10. Parks and Rec
I don't watch all that much TV, but I figured this season of Walking Dead would be top 10 worthy.
Started off stronger than it ended IMO. It was definitely an improvement over some previous seasons though.
I'd have to go back and look at a bunch of stuff to even remember what aired this year but I'd put Boardwalk Empire, Fargo, True Detective, Game of Thrones, and Hannibal up as the best shows on TV. Highest quality in the acting, directing, cinematography, etc. Walking Dead was really good too but I still kind of keep that on a level below those other shows.

My computer screen is fucked so I'm really behind on stuff. It looks like I have lots of goodness to catch up on. Fargo and Hannibal are at the top of that list.
Anyone else a Shameless fan? It's not a perfect show but I love it so much. For years I dated a girl who came from a poor family with a drug addict father. Shameless captures the family dynamics of that kind of world so well. Also, Review killed me with how funny it was. Andy Daly is the man.
1. TRUE DETECTIVE 2. THE LEFTOVERS 3. SONS OF ANARCHY 4. BOARDWALK EMPIRE 5. THE WALKING DEAD 6. OLIVE KITTERIDGE (mini series but still) 7. HELLO LADIES 8. GIRLS 9. HOUSE OF CARDS 10. LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER 10 1/2. MODERN FAMILY
Still want to start Justify one day, same goes for Fargo and the Strain.

Do it. Not the best story-lines you will see, but Walton Goggins character "Boyd" is one my all time favorite TV characters.
True Detective IMO was easily the best thing on TV this year. Amazing season.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's chemistry made that show what it was. But i think after the second viewing, the Leftovers was the best show of 2014, it just takes new viewers a while to really get into it. I watched the first two episodes completely clueless to what was taking place but by episode 3 I was hooked.

Boyd is one of my favorite TV characters ever. Delightful is the word I'd use to describe him.
Justified is a really good show, the past two seasons haven't been as good as the previous seasons, but even those seasons have had fantastic Boyd moments. I also need to tip my hat to Wynn Duffy, probably my second favorite character in the show. Anyway if you are looking for a fun, well acted, fast paced show, Justified is your ticket.
Also for those of you who haven't seen Rectify yet, watch that show. Its slow moving, and requires you to pay attention and think, but it is so well done. The subject matter seems depressing, and it is, but there are definitely a handful of big laughs in there, for me anyway.
I'm not caught up on The Good Wife yet, we just completed the season before the current one, but this is a really fantastic show. Pretty much a 50/50 hybrid of a serial/procedural, but so well written and so well acted, its always entertaining. So I can't vouch for this season, although by all accounts its fantastic, but generally I think its a show overlooked by a lot of TV buffs just because its a procedural. Well worth your time, and a particularly good show to watch with your husband/wife/partner/boyfriend/girlfriend.
Notable Comedies, in no particular order 1. Mindy Project (Ike Barinholtz I love you) 2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Andre Braugher is the real star, but I love Peretti too) 3. New Girl (it got bad for a while last season but this season has been spectacularly funny) 4. Silicon Valley 5. Key & Peele 6. Louie (really it was barely a comedy this season but still so good) 7. Parks and Recreation 8. Tonight Show (surprised how consistently Fallon & Co. make me laugh out loud)
Notable Dramas, in no particular order: 1. True Detective 2. The Leftovers (really stunning, challenging. demands a lot of the viewer) 3. Mad Men (I thought this season was the best in years) 4. Game of Thrones 5. Rectify 6. Hannibal 7. Justified 8. Newsroom (a divisive show, but I think its fantastic. somehow it manages to take itself too seriously and poke fun at itself at the same time)
Biggest fall from grace this season was Scandal. Look, it was never a great show, but it was FUN. Easy to binge watch. I thought it was a show aware of its own ridiculousness, but it became apparent in the season before the current one that awareness is not there. So really it was last season the show fell, but I tried to watch a few episodes this season and its just so goddamn stupid now.
Bad show I continue to watch every season: American Horror Story. I love the concept so much, and like most of the actors, but this season it didn't take but two episodes for the show to become awful. It took at least twice that last season. I think season one is the only one I would even call decent, but even it shit itself in the end. Its like they only write one episode before starting shooting and then just make up whatever along the way. But I just can't stop watching it.
Show I don't like everyone else loves: Orange is the New Black. Watched about three episodes and never laughed, not sure if I'm supposed to. The show did make me anxious and depressed, and roll my eyes a few times. I am open to giving it another shot.
New show I am cautiously following: Gotham. No greatness here yet, but there have been some good moments. I hope they find their footing story and tone wise. Jada Smith's character really annoys me.
New show I am cautiously following: Forever. Cool concept, but has slowly lost steam this season. Another show attempting to strike the serial/procedural balance.
Drama: 1. Hannibal 2. Homeland (Season 4) 3. Game of Thrones 4. Fargo 5. House of Cards 6. True Detective 7. An Honourable Woman 8. Newsroom 9. The Leftovers Tie 10. The Walking Dead/Talking Dead Tie 10. American Horror Story Coven Tie 10. Rectify
Comedy: 1. Modern Family 2. The Comeback 3. The Amy Schumer Show 4. You're The Worst 5. Two Broke Girls 6. Broad City
I had to edit mine for The Comeback - I can't believe I forgot it! It's one of the few comedies that makes me laugh. It might be tied for first. I am glad to see it back.
Honestly I don't watch much TV to really have an opinion or make a list. But I clicked on this thread solely to say if you haven't started watching The Americans, you need to.
