meals at Cobalts the last two years have been amazing. that streak with all the butter on top, MUAH.
Sunday Brunch at Cobalts with all that seafood and desserts...mimosas and killer bloody Mary's. MUAH!!!! There is actually a Worship Service at the Florabama on Sunday morning where they serve omelets and have a live contemporary Christian band. It is pretty cool to watch someone get baptized on the beach and then chill at Cobalt's Sunday Brunch for a couple hours.
Missed that Cmack...funny. Not sure I would want a buttery streak from a dude named Cobalt either.
Also have to give a shout out to the fresh seafood markets around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. There is a place out 180 called Fresh Market Seafood and a I believe, never been there but heard good things, that Bon Secour is the place to go for fresh seafood. I stop at Blalocks and get enough shrimp, tuna dip, fresh baked bread, and whatever else looks good and cook and dine on some great food all week. Remember NOT to buy your liquor in Alabama as it is cheaper in Florida.
I am making leftover Thanksgiving soup and talking seafood...dang...c'mon May.
Bonnaroo pre sale tickets this mornin almost $400 each for GA. Guess I'll sell beer for a pass.
I went through the exercise early yesterday and ended up around 350/351 or so. I didn't put in my credit card info but instead logged off. No doubt there will be some good shit for the 15th, but I said fuck it. Considering the very slim chance I would go back (particularly this year) I'm just going to have to wait and see what's on the lineup.
At least they inspired me enough to go to my account. For Hangout, I have to keep telling myself the Wailers are playing. And Snails. And Florence. Had I known how dissatisfied I would have been in advance, no way would I have purchased alumni. You win some you lose some. We definitely lost this year. I'm down to about 65/35 going. If it sells out early, particularly in light of the people I have heard saying how great the lineup is (niece and others that don't go to festivals or have any musical sense), the streak is gonna end at 4. Else it will be ending (for now) at 5.

@estaban Party with us at the Inforoo club one last year and then call it quits. Ne215, myself and what appears to be half of those that post here seem to all agree that this may be our last Hangout Fest. That'll be 4 for myself and Ne215. Unless the pre-party drops 2 worthwhile names, and the line up addition add someone good in the tent, and a few other good names, I am out and in search of a new fest to do annually. It hurts twice as much since the Waka jury is still out (pun intended) and could easily wrap my head around going there every year.. $400 for Bonaroo just doesn't seem worthwhile to me but, we'll see.
I am warming up to this line up as time goes on. It really is being supported by its lower and mid tier acts. At the same time, knowing that the evenings will fizzle out is really disappointing. A few friends go by the mantra "It isn't about the headliners, it is about discovering someone new." I get that and whole heartedly agree about the importance of new talent getting some attention.
In a way, maybe we are being selfish wanting headliners that appeal to >us< but will bring 5000 less people. For the bottom cards, they want as many ears and eyes on them as possible to grow. BUT BUT BUT, how manymore beers and how much more molly will be taken when Calvis Harris is closing versus Zac Brown Band causing all those ears/eyes to be rest until 530PM when Walk the Moon comes on and miss out on Bully and my girl Lizzo?
Haha. I'm not spending more to upgrade to do it, but I will find you guys.
And yeah, I understand they will possibly sell more tickets, but what they are doing is eliminating their hardcore fan base in favor of a shallower and more transient fan base. The reason all of us have been willing to go back 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 times was because we always knew that if we bought tickets, (along with the sun, sand, people and partying) we would be rewarded with some eclectic sets as well as maybe some more accessible sets that at worst were mostly agreeable. Going the uber pop route is not going to build or stoke the 15000 or so people that come back every year because of the music. It will excite base level listeners who might show up 1 or 2 years late in high school or early in college and say they went but otherwise not build any loyalty. I guess that's okay if the profit motive is to turn it into a destination festival for subset 16-21 year old audience. And it works as long as you can replenish the turnover in the ticket buying public. But ultimately a fest gets built on its reputation which is how we all helped build hangout. And once that takes a hit, they end up losing. Think about this thread. Sgt Blotter? Gone. Jabco? Gone. Beachbobseger? Gone. Many of us thinking of throwing in the towel this year or next, gone or soon to be. Maybe long term dollars per capita add up if you market products and brands to people earlier, but I would tend to doubt that most high school kids will be dumping 200+ a day into food, drinking and merchandise. So perhaps the model is just to feature brands and sponsors who want the new Hangout demo long term over people who reliably show up and spend money.

Agreed. I assume GV has spent the $$$ on consultants to decide whether to stick with the "good ole jam, blues, alt- rock adult crowd" versus the "hip new, untz and college crow." Which one will turn over the most profit? As long as they are all using their parent's Black MasterCard, I'm sure they could careless who attends.
And I agree with that. I think Huka was more about the music side than the corporate side, but we lost that balance once they were out. As you know, I dont mind stuff geared toward a younger crowd - untz or rap or any of the stuff that came after my era. I can still have a good time and usually will see some of those sets anyway. But damn if it isn't so heavily weighted bubble gum this year.

It has that bubbly gum pop sound and lyrics but the rest of their songs seem to take on a darker, harder nature. A couple of a live shows off youtube show them bringing hard energy and jam rather just 4 minute songs and chill.
Hangout has me back next year if they pull something like Ghostland or Savoy for a tent closer versus the Weeknd(Saturday or Friday), Mutemath (their new album is pretty pop-ish and perfect for this fest demo)for Palladia closer somewhere, and one jam band somewhere in the mix.
I go to Hangout for the vacation on the beach, the pool, clean, sun, and the concert part just sort of showed up 7 years ago. I guess we could get another surprise and some of these pop artists actually sing and play something a little deeper and more heady than "oh baby, baby, baby, baby". Now that we sort of have an Infocrew...I'm going for the party. If we are into the music we will party inside the gate, if not...lets party by the pool or on the beach. I've had six great times at Hangout and gave up on Bonnaroo. Age might have something to do with it.

I have no hope of replicating the musical enjoyment from 12, 13, 14 or 15 though. When I think about even 2015, at least I got Foo Fighters, Skrillex, Beck, My Morning Jacket, Umphreys, TV on the Radio, Damian Marley, Dirty Heads, Galactic, Pres Hall, Frank Turner, etc. so the Tove Lo, Foster the People, Paramore stuff wasn't anything I had to consider.

It was like 50/50 last year, while this year it feels 60/40, with most of the top line being that 60% pop. There are lot of similar acts like Iration/Dirty Heads being replaced by Wailers/Pepper/Nahko.
It's been a roller coaster trying to figure out how I feel about this line-up.
I just looked at Pemberton from last year, and that may be a shoe-in for me if they put out the same caliber of a line up this year. Reminds me of Wakarusa /w a mix of Funfunfun w/ the comedy acts.
Pemberton usually looks good. BC is probably too far for me to get excited about going, but that's a Huka festival as well. I saw an article earlier this week where they named a new ceo leaving the other guy freed up to focus on one of a kind and unique festivals. That it's based in New Orleans could be big if they either expand Buku into something bigger or go after AEG (Jazzfest headliners) or Voodoo (Live Nation). We are a small city, but obviously that doesn't count for culture. Having 3 or 4 major festivals a year I would consider (Essence doesn't really Interest me) gives me more options to see more live music.

Austin runs shit musically (except for hip hop: Houston) in Texas and it is a tenth of the size compared to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Ill be in NOLA from roughly Dec 6th-14th by the way for an improve intensive at the New Movement Theatre. If you want cheap giggles, hit that theatre up dude. The owner Chris Trew runs the whole "Air Sex Championships" that take place at random festivals including Funfunfun and Pemberton.

I posted about this festival last year and not a single person seemed to know about it. Depending on how things go this year, I may shell out the $$ to hit this thing up. The sheer size and attention to detail is insane, along with the fact there is a story line to go with the whole festival. 4 nights, 20 some stages, 9 different "districts"
Boomtown looks like fun, but I don't fly much anymore and done with Europe after living there three years. Gonna look into one of the Mattlikesrock festivals he brought up. The one in North Carolina is interesting. I really like Hangout but, this year the lineup is shifted way too far to the kids. Hopefully, this will be a short lived experiment and Hangout will go back to a better balance of rock, jam, indie, alternative, R&B, EDM, etc.

I think my paradigm for what I want in a festival is slightly shifting. Camping/destination festivals seem to appeal to me more than just a basic city based festival. I've attended ACL for 3 years, FFF for 2, and this will be my 3rd SXSW with a badge and I guess I am enjoying the idea of GOING somewhere and away from the hustle. Hangout certainly is an outlier even though it isn't a camping festival. So maybe I will enjoy this year just as much as last year even with a shift in line-up format. Plus hanging with y'all should be a blast. If the Weeknd closes, let's hit up the condos early and watch Har Mar Superstar videos by the pool til 2am.
I am pretty sure I will find someone playing from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm I want to see for three days. A break here and there is inevitable. Drinks by the pool with whatever music we can conjure up does sound better than Weekend. I am hoping they don't make it worse by scheduling the twenty bands I really want to see at the same time like Shakes, Moon Taxi, Jason Isbell, Cage the Elephant, or Miike Snow. i understand Kravitz is all about himself (ego), but I'd much rather hear him headline than Weekend or Calvin.

This will be my 6th and probably last. It was damn good while it lasted!
