John Scofield Ben Harper Gary Clark Jr. Jerry Douglas Jim James Carl Broemel Kerry King Gary Holt
Who else? I'm taking nominations.
But first, a few words about the criteria. 1) They have to play guitar. I know someone will want to mention Bela Fleck. Yes, he's amazing. But his instrument is called a banjo. 2) They have to be really good at playing the guitar. That requires more than them being the guitar player for a band you really like.
Once I receive a few nominations, I'll convert this into a poll.

There's a lot of banjo and bleep-bloop represented on this year's lineup. But what about the solo guitarists whose music is built mainly on their riffs? I'm looking to make a list, and hopefully help myself and others discover new artists.
These are the only ones I know...
Ben Harper Gary Clark Jr. Mac Demarco Benjamin Booker
Who else we got? Honorable mentions for bands with good guitar players, like John Scofield or Adam Granduciel from War on Drugs.
Also, you're list is woefully short. For someone who doesn't like bleep bloops, and banjos, you sure don't seem to know many guitarists.
I don't pretend to know the whole lineup. That's why I asked for nominations. And I got nothing against banjos.
Forgive Boner, but he was referring to Matty's list. There was another thread that was made and I moved the posts into here to merge both topics together.

I was only talking about solo performers like Gary Clark Jr initially. I already know Jim James, Kerry King, Gary Holt, John Scofield, etc. and that they're going to be great. Forgive me for not being too familiar with Jerry Douglas.
This thread is just fine though, thanks itrainmonkeys for merging.

gotcha. I guess I just didn't feel there's enough of a difference. All those "solo" guitarists will be playing with full bands. Why exclude great guitarists just because the band isn't named after them.

Yeah, this thread idea is definitely better. MMJ and Slayer shredding my head off are my most anticipated shows of the whole weekend.

I have locked this poll. While it appears, at first glance, that Gary Clark Jr. won, that is only true for the online polling. Based on the write-in votes, John Scofield won with 98% of the votes. There were those who challenged the validity of these results, but I personally conducted a thorough investigation (supervised by former Florida Sec'y of State Katherine Harris) and can confirm their accuracy.
And c'mon people, is it that surprising? GCJ is very talented and popular these days. But do you really think Sco can't play that same fuzzy blues guitar sound? Conversely, could GCJ on his best day have played in a band with Miles Davis? Could he fit in with MMW, Phil & Friends, or any of the countless other acts in countless other genres that Scofield has? No, he couldn't.
So, the people have decided, John Scofield is the best guitarist who will be playing at this year's Bonnaroo. Glad we got that settled.
