Hey, everyone. Have you ever participated in Soberoo or gone to meetings? To be perfectly honest, I've struggled with abusing alcohol for quite a while now and I've silently decided to discontinue use. I'm not sure why I haven't really told friends and family - I think it's mostly because I don't want to let them down if I fail. I've also tried quitting before, and I don't want the response of "Yeah, okay suuuuure."
I'd like to hear any personal stories of being sober at Bonnaroo or why you don't partake if you feel like sharing.

I haven't done it (I enjoy Corn at festivals ) but there are plenty of folks that have done it and been supportive of others. This is old info/posts but some may still be relevant. Browse through some of these and hopefully others will be able to reply to this thread with their experience:

9 years sober here. Went to roo in 2003/2004 very much not sober, returned in 2012 and did 2012/2013/2014 sober. For me attending sober is infinitely preferable. I see significantly more live music sober, and have a much easier time connecting with the music, period.
Note I was 2 years sober before attending my first sober concert, and was 7 years sober before I did bonnaroo. YMMV. Since I started seeing live music sober I've attended a pretty staggering amount of shows and festivals, relative to my time in active addiction. It just strips away all the bullshit and makes the whole experience smoother.
I have no problem with others use of alcohol or drugs. Whatever connects you to the music, without harming yourself or those around you, is cool with me. Alcohol and drugs just don't work for me anymore.
I won't get into my full story of why I got sober, but if you ever wanted to chat on the phone about it I'd be happy to share, but if you heard one you've heard them all. Drugs and alcohol destroyed all my relationships, all my opportunities, etc. In sobriety I got all that back, so I'll take sobriety. I got sober in 12 step meetings, and still actively participate in a 12 step program, so thats what I know and recommend. But I understand the steps aren't for everyone.
Soberoo is a pretty kick ass thing. In past years Bonnaroo has provided us with a sweet covered area for meetings, of which we have a handful a day, it changes from year to year. There is also a soberoo booth right across from That Tent. Meeting attendance can range from 15 to 80 people. Its one of the more consistent meetings I go to, I love seeing the same faces year over year.
If you feel you have a problem and would like to hear others experience, it wouldn't kill you to hit up a local 12 step meeting. And I see you are in Huntsville! I know some kick ass sober bonnaroo/live music folks in that area I could hook you up with. They could steer you to the good meetings and share more experiences of live music in sobriety. Shoot me a PM if you want to chat more.

Thanks for all the info and sharing your story. I'm on my 3rd day of sobriety right now, and I haven't had any big slips yet. It's been kind of nice to just experience everything around me and be fully aware of what is going on. I'm sure I will eventually reach a point where it will be a struggle. If I hit a wall, it's nice to know that you offered to be there to talk. I really appreciate it. I'd be interested in getting to know some local Huntsville folks that hit up Bonnaroo sober. Thanks again for everything.

Two years sober and will be going to my third Bonnaroo this year. But like postjack, I had been sober for awhile (6 months) and had worked with 12 step groups before going. Had I not been sober I wouldn't go to as many shows as I do now nor would I be having as much fun.
I've yet to go to the Soberoo meetings due to schedule conflicts, but this years lineup pretty much sealed the deal of me having less of those so i'll be hitting them up pretty frequently this year. I hope to see you there.
I'll have to share 3post1jack1 's suggestion of going to a 12 step meeting. And if you need someone to talk to about anything, pm me anytime

Awesome, thank you. I'll hopefully see you at a Soberoo meeting! I have some very supportive friends going with me this year, so I think that will be helpful once I talk to them about my decision to cease drinking.

I was sober as a judge my first three Bonnaroos and had a blast. And I am a regular drinker, I was just unable to handle the endurance while drinking at the same time. Also didn't want to splurge a bunch of money on booze. Even in 2013 and 2014 I waited until sundown to drink anything. I do not have any idea how some of these people get hammered in the day at Bonnaroo then keep on going. Even in my rowdy prime tailgating and what not, I could not have done that.
Who makes guacamole happen!?!? Does a tabloid like the University of Oklahoma student paper make guacamole happen or do ME AND YOU make it exist? Just cause they write about it doesn't make guacamole exist - ME AND YOU MAKE IT EXIST!
