Mumford and Sons
(Left to right: Ted Dwane- bass; Marcus Mumford- lead vocals, guitar, drums; Winston Marshall- banjo, banjo love making; Ben Lovett- keyboard, accordion) FacebookMain Site
Biography: Mumford and Sons formed as a band in late 2007 as a folk rock/alternative rock band. In October of 2009 their debut album, Sigh No More, was released in the UK. The US had to wait till early 2010 for the album. Sigh No More went on to be very successful in terms of popularity and critical reviews. Sigh No More received the award for best British album at the Britt Awards. In September of 2012 their highly anticipated second album came out, Babel. It was seen as a weaker album than Sigh No More, but Sigh No More is hard to live up to. This album did how ever push Mumford and Sons into becoming a household name. Through their song I Will Wait they received tons radio attention. This attention lead to other alternative bands coming in to the "mainstream" such as The Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men. The peak of this genre was seen at the Grammy's in February of 2013. Mumford and Sons beat out Jack White, Frank Ocean, The Black Keys, and Fun. for Album of the Year. This led to Mumford and Sons being headliner material in the summer of 2013. They headlined many festivals and where supposed to headline Bonnaroo, but had to cancel due to the health of the bassist Ted. After a short fall North American tour in 2013 they went on a hiatus. Marcus Mumford was a big part of The New Basement Tapes during their hiatus, and it is highly debated if this is our mystery superjam. If the New Basement Tapes do not end up being a superjam it is likely that we could see some of the amazing artists join Marcus during the Headlining set.The announcement of their headlining performance for this years Bonnaroo was what broke the hiatus, and even though they have announced more tour dates it seems Bonnaroo will be their first gig back. It will be their first show in about 20 months. It is known that they are working on their third album, but it is unknown if it will be out before Bonnaroo. Even if it is not out by June we could expect new (even debut) music from them at Bonnaroo. This belief comes from their 2011 set at Bonnaroo where they played multiple songs off Babel more than a year before Babel came out.
A lesser known song of theirs, but one of my favorites
Personal Thoughts: Sigh No More is what sparked my interest in music around late 2012. I have listened to the album from start to finish at least a hundred times, and if you haven't listened to it I defiantly recommend you do. I also recommend watching all the bookshop sessions on YouTube; those videos where my first exposer to Mumford and Sons (two are embedded above).Without this album I probably never would have gone to Bonnaroo in 2013. In 2013 I was heart broken that they canceled. I saw them later that year at their Atlanta show. It was good. They covered Come Together by the Beatles. They also covered I'm On Fire by Bruce Springsteen earlier in their tour, so we should get at least one awesome cover in their set. I do not like Babel. As I have listened to more music I have started to like Mumford and Sons less, but I am very thankful they got me into music. I personally will go see all of their set this year. It is not my top show for the weekend, but if they put out another album my thoughts would change a lot. Lastly if you love watching a man make love to a banjo, Mumford and Sons will not disappoint.

Thanks for the write up. I'll add my thoughts in return. I had barely heard of them, but never heard them when the 2011 lineup was announced. I then bought Sigh no more and grew to love it. Their show at Roo '11 was one of the best Ive seen. I admit, the more you hang around inforoo the harder it is to stay a fan, with the constant negativity. If Sigh No More got you into music, only focus on that, not Babel, and not the anti success negativity. Their show is going to be amazing, it'll be full of Sigh no more, Babel tracks may come off better live, and I'll bet a ham sandwich they world premiere 2 or 3 songs that night. For people to go have a nap during them is a terrible closed minded non Roo attitude. It'll be fun!
Are they better than a ham sandwich? No. Are they better than a nap before the late night shows? Probably not. Are they better than Kings of Leon? Yes. Lastly if you love watching a man make love to a banjo, Mumford and Sons will not disappoint.
You can go to hell. Mumford gets way more hate than they deserve. I'm very excited to see them. I was also disappointed when they cancelled, but I was expecting it and I totally don't blame them. They definitely made the right decision. But they're good and had Babel been a stronger album with a better single that got super popular I think less people would talk shit about them. I was just listening to Sigh No More again today actually forgot how great that album is. White Blank Page may be one of my favorite songs an I'm going to dance my ass off during Dustbowl Dance.

I personally think they better than a ham sandwich that was more for all the people here who think they suck. It was intended to show them it could be worse. I was not mad at mumford for canceling either. I am still a fan and intend on seeing all of their show this year.

Although Babel was not as good as sigh no more, its still good. i listen to both albums on occasion.
It will be the most crowded act of the week. I gaurantee there will be a lot of people buying tickets just because of them. There were so many dissappointed fans in 2013. I broke the news to a lot of them near my camp after i read the news on my phone. They were super bummed.
Obviously music is subjective, but they put on one of the best live shows I've been a part of. They remind me of the Avetts in that aspect.
Of course there will be a few to skip them, kind of like the tens of thousands that skipped Kanye.

That makes me feel much better. I was really sad faced that the person who chose to do their write up wasn't even going to attend their show. I will be getting pit for this show. I seriously love me some Mumford. Don't even care if I'm in the pit alone.

the only reason I won't be in the pit is because i was literally the first person to get to the atl show. I got there at 8am. If they put out another album that is just better than babel i will be much more excited about seeing them.
Sooo... I was told that they didn't even write Sigh No More, they got all the material from a studio musician who had been working on it. If that is the case, it would explain why Babel wasn't as good.

I personally believe that not enough credit is given to Mumford and Sons in regards to how young they are. I mean, they're a group of 20 something year olds who have a lot more talent and success than so many of their peers. When people bash them all that comes to my mind is that not many bands have honed their craft at 20 something years old and only after two albums. I think Mumford hasn't entirely honed their craft either, but regardless when I saw them a few years back I was blown away by their talent level.

For the record, I'm not sayin this is true, just throwing it out as something I heard. I'm really wondering if you guys that are into Mumford have heard that rumor and know it to be false or true or whatever.

This is BS, put it to rest. Studio musicians can't put that shit together or else they would be M&S
It is the band a day sign up thread. I thought everyone but me didn't like Mumford and Sons on here so I tried to make it clear that they have their faults, but they are not the worst headliner we could have got.

I understand. I dont mind mumford, I think they are a great band for people to be introduced to more bluegrass/folk music. I'll be there and I'll sing along to the songs I know, but they are a meh kinda headliner for me. I think If you are up close it will be awesome, but a mile back I dont see it being out of this world for the casual fan.
I used to love them. I was receptive to the anti-success hate, but my feelings really remained on the fence until, reading the "Mumford Sucks" thread, I found the video of the 'heart' count for Sigh No More and Babel. Marcus sings the word 'heart'" 65 times, across two albums/26 tracks. Now it cannot be unheard. :/
Heart, heart, heart, heart, heart:
Putting the video in a spoiler in case you are curious and want to hear it, or in case you do not wish to ruin all your Mumford listening like I did.
I think of this video every time I hear him say a long "heart," like in White Blank Page, "your heeeeeeaaaarrt, your heeeeeeaaarrrt as well as your body..." But, it makes me giggle and didn't really ruin them for me.
Also, you def didn't need to change the OP Pieshutter. We're just discussing the band.. I thought it was funny.
I'll probably chill at the back of the What field for this. I'm not super into them and I kind of find their songs repetitive. Like if I've heard one Mumford song, I've heard them all. I'll be a nice, chill set though. Also, how appropriate that this was the artist of the day for Valentine's Day. Heartheartheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart.
I know a couple of people who heard a new song by Mumford & Sons this week, word is they're releasing it next Monday. And they tell me it's electric guitar-based with no banjo whatsoever and is going to be yet another big hit for them...so needless to say it'll be interesting to hear how it sounds.

Mumford goes electric. Prepare for the backlash. Bob Dylan style fiasco part deux.
I honestly can't understand why Mumford would get any hate. They are fantastic musicians and put on an absolutely great show. Until inforoo (and besides inforoo) I have never heard anyone say negative things about them. I just don't get it. Babel is easily just as good or damn near close to Sign No More. I was so let down by them canceling last time. It is hate towards bands like this then praise for someone like Deadmau5 and Kendrick that really make me not think I'd fit in with inforoo people. I don't know if this site is mostly people whom think roo should still be a jam festival or not but I really feel the music taste as a whole on this site (at least the major posters) is very lacking. I just can't understand why people would rather see someone like MMJ jam for hours then see actual good bands live. Same with Mau5. He has the most excruciatingly boring house music I have ever heard. Yet somehow everyone loves him. I love house music but his is garbage. You don't need to repeat the same exact thing for an 8 min long song. Jam acts are the same. They just jam some random music for hours with a few songs thrown in. I'll take Mumford, Awol, Florence and Against Me any day. Sorry for the rant. I just can't understand the hate on bands. If you don't like them stay out of their threads.

So you don't like people hating on your music, and then you shit on Deadmau5, Kendrick and My Morning Jacket.

This statement is all over the place. Multiple personalities type of throught process.
