Biography: In 2012, Seattle production duo ODESZA began as a recording project between Harrison Mills (aka Catacombkid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches) after graduating from Western Washington University. Two tracks from Summer's Gone, "How Did I Get Here" and "iPlayYouListen," reached #1 on the Hype Machine Popular chart, cementing the duo as a force in the underground electronic community.
2013 saw the release of the My Friends Never Die EP with three of the five tracks hitting #1 on Hype Machine. Relentless touring followed, including dates with Pretty Lights, Emancipator, Michal Menert, and performances at Sasquatch Music Festival, Lightning In A Bottle, What The Festival, Summer Meltdown, Capitol Hill Block Party, MusicfestNW, Decibel Festival and Symbiosis Gathering.
February 2014 brought the release of the ODESZA single “Sun Models (feat. Madelyn Grant)” off the forthcoming new album which also hit #1 on Hype Machine. In March 2014, ODESZA’s remix of Pretty Lights’ “Lost And Found” was released on the DIVERGENT movie soundtrack and hit #1 on Hype Machine, the duo’s eighth #1 on Hype Machine.
Sounds Like Genre: good electronic shit Similar Artists: disclosure, flume, classixx, bonobo with words and some extra pow Similar Bonnaroo Artists: you'll probs also enjoy seeing: flume, caribou, SBTRKT, tycho, rudimental, jamie xx
Suggested Listening Honestly, there's nothing between their 3 albums that I dislike. favorite tracks: how did I get here, iplayyoulisten, my friends never die, memories that you call, say my name, koto, sun models...
outside of their albums, they have an awesome mix tape series on their soundcloud account called NO.SLEEP my personal favorite of the no sleep mixes (so far):

Physical Reaction/Live Show these boys are a blast live. I've seen them ~3 time (more like 2.25 thanks to an incident recounted at the bottom) and every time has been a blast. I first saw them open for emancipator, then open for bonobo, and then saw their mainroom headlining set where they sold out at first ave. it's been really cool to watch them blow up and progress as artists. they were basically 2 kids with some equipment not even 2 years ago, and their set has blown into a full light & graphics show. if you have any interest in dancing, be there. you'll have fun no matter what. they clearly love what they're doing and I'll catch them whenever I can.
to those who may not be into EDM, you should still give these guys a shot. they're quite far outside of the EDM stereotype - they're no cheese act.

Interesting Facts ODESZA may or may not have derived their name from Mills' uncle's ship, which sank. Only his uncle and one other crew mate survived.
Mills & Knight met their freshman year of college, but didn't begin collaborating until near the end of their senior year.
Personal Random Notes Here's a few stories from when I've seen ODESZA:
when I first saw these boys in 2013, they were opening for emancipator. I'd had a really stressful week and was ready to party. ODESZA was so fun as an opener, and they were the main reason I was there. between ODESZA and emancipator's sets, I decided I should take some shots. apparently in the middle of emancipator I just yelled "I GOTTA GO!" and left. and apparently sat on the curb outside with some random boy. a friend of mine came outside and saw me, and tried to talk to me. apparently I shushed her and pulled this guy into a cab. and then apparently I jumped out of the cab at my place, said "KBYE!!" and ran inside. I still have "jacob emancipator" in my phone. which I didn't discover until several months later.
when I "saw" ODESZA this last october, we went to the depot (restaurant connected to first ave) for food & drinks beforehand. the friends I was with were all part of my fantasy league. the eagles were playing and I had their defense and it was a really intense matchup between unicornfarts & my friend tate's team, so we were both yelling at the tv. anyway, at one point the eagle defense was totally fucking up and I let out a big "AHHHHHH!!" while pointing toward the screen. apparently at the same time the ODESZA boys were walking past to head out of the restaurant. I apparently startled them and they thought I was a big freak show fan girl that was yelling at them. in reality, I was a big freak show fantasy football loser.
finally. I didn't see much of the above show ^, because some dude stole my wallet during the beginning of their set. I hunted the guy down, called him out, and watched a first ave security guard tackle him as he ran away. then I got to sit with the cops for 90% of the show. all the first ave employees who were part of the fiasco situation (like 5 of them) stayed outside with me and ate tater tots as if they were watching a movie while all of this went down. after I got to go back in and see 2 songs, the show was over. I lost my friends and was about to head out alone when a security guard grabbed me and told me that I needed an escort because the cops released the 2 dudes involved in stealing my wallet and they were outside. so, I got 2 body guards to walk me to my car. so all in all, it was kinda cool.
TL;DR: go see ODESZA but don't let your wallet get stolen

Gotta correct you on something: their name didn't come from the sinking of an uncle's ship. While Harrison's uncle's ship did sink, the name of the boat wasn't Odessa. The real story is that they couldn't use ODESSA so they swapped out an "S" with a "Z." They just use the ship-sinking story to mess with press people, which is pretty funny.

More signs of them messing with interviewers I researched them a bit before interviewing them myself, and found they gave different reasons behind their name. I asked them why their answers conflicted, and they laughed and told me the true reason (assuming they weren't just messing with me either).

well, I adjusted it to "ODESZA may or may not have derived their name..." - leave the mystique up in the air!
Before the lineup, I'd seen odesza a few times on pandora to know the name when I saw it. After the lineup, I love it. I've listened to almost everything on spotify, made a setlist playlist, and hope to see them on the farm.

Saw Odesza in Nashville this past Friday. Good show- they were entertaining. Not worth missing top talent for but if your group just wants to chill for a set a do a little dancing- it is good for that.
