General Info Members:So this is a band with four guys who play organ/piano, guitar, drums, and bass and their names are (John) Medeski, (John) Scofield, (Billy) Martin, and (Chris) Wood, respectively. Biography: MMW started as a jazz trio in NYC, playing mostly acoustic jazz standards. As they began recording and releasing more albums, their own brand of funk/hip hop/groove influences creeped into their jazz sound giving them a more widespread appeal outside the typical jazz scene. They exploded into the "jam" scene after the entire band joined Phish on stage in Austin for a ridiculous You Enjoy Myself (can be found here). In that same spirit of collaboration, they have recorded four albums with John Scofield. Now John Scofield is a legend of a jazz guitar player, having played with jazz greats like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus, Pat Metheny, and Jaco Pastorius as well as filling on guitar with Phil Lesh and Friends, Mavis Staples, Gov't Mule, and many, many more. The dude doesn't just play jazz guitar either, he is at home doing new orleans funk, blues, rock, or just far out weird shiz. Major Discography: MSMW have only release 4 albums of material together. Their first together, A Go Go, was release under John Scofield's name, with MMW being the "studio" band, and is a great jazz-funk album. The most recent was Juice, from September of last year that sees them perform some original jazz tunes, as well as their own (re)interpretations of classic songs like Sunshine of Your Love,The Times they are a-changing, and Light My Fire. John Scofield has performed on too many albums to list, but he performed with Miles Davis on You're Under Arrest, Decoy, and Star People;

here is a full live show from a jazz fest in europe. over an hour long, but great stuff.
Physical Reaction/Live Show These are four phenomenal musicians, and their talents will be on full display. It's gonna be funky, high energy, dance-able grooves and lots of improvisation. Probably some of the best guitar solos on the farm this year. Don't let the word "jazz" scare you, the music is infectious and engaging and I think most people will like it (unless you are one of those "where is the singer?" type people. Then you won't like it).
Interesting Facts John Scofield put out an album with Jon Cleary, another Bonnaroo performer this year, in 2009. Medeski Martin & Wood, The Word (a John Medeski side project with N. Mississippi Allstars and Robert Randolph), The Wood Brothers (a Chris Wood side project), The Medeski/Martin duo, Spectrum Road (John Medeski was organist) have all played bonnaroo through the years.
Personal Notes I am stoked about this set, I had been hoping they would be on the farm since their album came out last year. John Scofield is a guitar god. I think this set is going to be a wildly good time.

For those keeping track of such things, John Medeski also sat in with Pedrito Martinez Group just after the Spectrum Road set.
This is going to be great. But as a selfish counterpoint, if you find the idea of jazz scary, stay away. Or at least stay way towards the back out of reach of the scariness. I love how sparse the turnout is for Roo artists perceived as jazzy.
