Biography: Pokey LaFarge is from Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. Let's talk about that for a moment. Bonnaroo has a big Midwestern draw, so you likely know the feel of his hometown even if you've never been there. It's a fairly large city about halfway between the Midwest's cultural capital of Chicago and Illinois' actual capital of Springfield. The "halfway" part is key because, like most Midwestern regional hubs, Bloomington is otherwise surrounded by cornfields. You can hear that pull, from being a place between places, in Pokey's music.
But it wasn't Bloomington, or Normal, or Bloomington-Normal, or even Chicago that held Pokey's interest. It was the road--at first. After graduating high school in 2001, Pokey changed his name from Andrew Heissler, set out hitchhiking, proceeded to begin a prolific songwriting career, and later assembled the current band, which performs under Pokey's name.
When the road wore out its welcome, it was the river that called next. Pokey eventually settled along the Mississippi in St. Louis, and the rest is revivalist ragtime history.
Major Discography: Marmalade (2006) Beat, Move, and Shake (2008) Riverboat Soul (2010) Middle of Everywhere (2011) Live in Holland (2012) Pokey LaFarge (2013) Something in the Water (2015, forthcoming)
Sounds Like Genre: ragtime, Americana, turn of the century jazz Similar Artists: Even considering the comeback and recent popularity of American roots music, Pokey's sound is distinct. Those who enjoy the folk and bluegrass elements on the Bonnaroo ticket should definitely give the band a listen.
Suggested Listening Central Time is a good starting point. If you like it, you like Pokey.
Live Show I haven't seen him live, but will I be there? Yes, depending on conflicts. I'm expecting a fun show. pondo ROCKS and others have given positive reviews of the band's live show. A separate thread with additional videos is here: www.inforoo.com/thread/34228/pokey-lafarge-2015
I just adore Pokey. We've seen him 5 times in a little over a year and have another show in May. I can't get enough of him.
We went to Chicago last September to see the Central Time tour and it was amazing. What he put together on that tour with all those artists was something really special. It's a long story but we ended up getting invited by Pokey himself to see their show the next night in Wisconsin so we changed all our plans and went to that show too.
They are all so talented though and if you have the chance - go see him! It boggles my mind that tickets to his shows are only $15.
