About Sound Tribe Sector 9 or STS9 is an instrumental band that formed in Atlanta, GA in the late 90’s. Once Self-described as “post rock dance music”, their music combines the sound of many genres ranging from funk and jazz, to post rock, to electronic. Their current live show would fall into the “jamtronica” sub-genre, combining instrumental improvisation with electronic sonic elements. STS9 has built up a cult following of fans based on their live shows and constant touring. STS9 has a steady presence in the music festival circuit; particularly in the jam and EDM scenes with headlining and late night sets at festivals like Wakarusa, Summercamp, Camp Bisco, Electric Forest and All Good just to name a few. STS9 has become somewhat of a Bonnaroo regular with 2015 being their 5th appearance on the Farm. (previously playing in ’03,’05,’07,’11) Their 2011 appearance was a 2:30 a.m. set that lasted until sunrise, (fingers crossed we get more of the same this year.) (source wikipedia, Bonnaroo.com)
Major Discography (All available on Spotify)
STS9’s sound has evolved over the years. Early albums will be more jazz and funk; later albums will add more electronic elements. Here are some albums to get you started on their diverse sound.
Interplanetary Escape Vehicle (1999) Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace (2000) Seasons 01 (2002) Artifact (2004) Peaceblaster (2008) Ad Explorata (2009) When The Dust Settles – EP (2011)
Sounds Like Genre: Livetronica, Jam Band, EDM Similar Artists: The Disco Biscuits, Lotus, The New Deal, Papadosio Similar Bonnaroo Artists: I guess Dopapod? Gramatik? These are two artists that play many of the same festivals as STS9 and will more than likely draw similar crowds at Roo. Essential Listening:
"Circus" Live at Bonnaroo 2011. Encore from the sunrise set. Listen in at 4:05 for a good laugh.
"Squares and Cubes" - Athens, GA 3.22.13
"Monkey Music" All Good 2009
"When The Dust Settles" Hangout 2014
Live Show STS9’s live shows feature extended grooves and jams. The band does a great job of building a song up to a climax with each member adding a little something as the song progresses. The STS9 experience will include a top notch light show and will induce a lot of dancing and moving. The music can appeal to hardcore jam band fans, EDM heads and anyone else who likes to dance excessively for hours at a time. I believe that STS9 will likely play at after dark, whether that’d be a late night marathon or a tent closer before a headliner remains to be seen. But regardless of when the set is, I will be there raging.
Special Shout Out to SwiggitySwoodyComin4DatBooty - for all your hard work and dedication to this thread.
And really excited for this set. Haven't seen STS9 in probably 4 years, but always enjoyed them. Can't wait to see them with Alana, heard nothing but good things. Would be amazing if they got a sun rise set.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but STS9 has a pretty sweet deal for those interested in thoroughly getting to know the current incarnation of the band:
For $25 you get the FLAC version of their ONE / ONE all improv show at the Fillmore, and MP3 versions of every show they played in 2014. So that is 50 live shows for 50 cents apiece.
Personally I've always liked STS9, and have caught them live a handful of times (most noticeably at Bonnaroo 2003, my first Roo LN set), but have never really taken the time to become super familiar with them. This bundle provides a super easy way to get familiar with their songs. I've been listening to the shows and really like what I'm hearing. I really really really want to try and stay up for their entire set, which I'm assuming will go till morning. That's my #1 Bonnaroo 2015 goal.
