Jesus when is the last time y'all watched this? I used to watch it all the time in college, so like 2003-2004ish. I bought a used copy on amazon recently since I haven't seen it since then.
First off its a really well made concert DVD. Great shots, great sound, occasional appropriate crowd shots. Good song selection too.
Second I'm amazed at how the DVD kind of celebrates the unpreparedness of its attendees. People talking about not bringing tents, just sleeping wherever they pass out. Les Claypool celebrating the sunburned faces. And of course the extremely obvious demographic, that all these attendees are fans of Panic, Phish, the Dead, and Cheese.
I know it was 13 years ago, but goddamn what a drastically different time.
So cool to remember how stripped down the grounds were.
Anyway I'm not even halfway through it yet, I'm just taken aback at how incredible the music is. Two Les Claypool projects so far, Ween, Dirty Dozen, I think that was Drums & Tuba? What the hell happened to those guys?

Sounds cool, i think ill try to pick myself up a copy, Drums and Tuba broke up in 05.

yeah that 03 DVD is great too, I'll have to find another copy. IIRC thats the one that has the Flaming Lips "Yoshimi" video. They really set the bar for late night weirdness.
Picked back up today where I left off, the Panic tracks. Blue Indian then Tall Boy > Testify (with dottie peoples). Watching the crowd here its not hard to see why Bonnaroo and AC looooooved them some widespread panic for years. Makes me happy but also tough to see Mikey in this video. His first and only Bonnaroo, I want to say he died just several months later. But damn Dottie Peoples has that crowd going CRAZY. I kind of miss that innocence, that propensity to just love the music without cynicism, to just accept it with pure joy. Not saying we can't have that now, I definitely saw it in the 2013 Soul Superjam, and even a bit during the Skrillex Superjam.
Rambling here but something to be said for leaving your biases and preconceptions about what constitutes good music at the door.
Ooh and here comes Robert Randolph and the Blind Boys!

During Robert Randolph, noticing in the tent he's playing they have pictures hanging up throughout, kind of like they do at jazzfest. That Superfly/NOLA influence. The tent also looks ENORMOUS. Have no clue what tent it is.
EDIT: Was this some kind of gospel tent? did roo have a gospel tent in 2002?

Bela Fleck & Edgar Meyer, I loved their record back in the day. I remember the CD came with kind of a "making of" DVD about their tour together. It was pretty fantastic, they had such a funny relationship. Obviously a lot of love between them but so many little arguments as well, like an old married couple.

ahhhh phil and bobby and jimmy herring!
so just realizing i'll never see the grateful dead in any form since I didn't get chicago tickets. Never saw "the dead" or "the other ones" or even furthur if that counts.
I always skipped the dead sets at other bonnaroos for some reason. usually to get ready for some late night set.

I'm in a similar boat, couldn't get any decent tickets, I'm planning on going to Lockn this summer for some Dead, Phills already gonna be there and I'd say either Bobby or Bill will be added at some point.

makes sense. I'm holding out to hopefully make the phish fest when they announce it. its during a tricky time at work but hopefully I can scheme and get a couple of days off to fly to watkins glen.
Like every other Phish fan I'm hoping Trey takes some of these Dead licks he's learning and plays some dead tunes with Phish this summer.

As the festival grew and started to diversify its offerings, it got harder and harder to secure the publishing rights for those performances. The jam scene was much more compliant to just putting their stuff out there (think etree, archive.org) for little in return, and it's clear from that POS they put out in 2005 that there were too many marketing hands in the candy jar to put anything out with any integrity. I much prefer what they're doing now, i.e. mini docs on single shows, but the 2003 film by Danny Clinch was the best video production they've done to date. Unfortunately, Clinch hasn't done anything to top it since.

ah that makes a lot of sense. Its a shame, so cool to have a nice long movie to watch that does as good a job as possible encompassing the whole weekend.

BONNAROO BABY!!
Being a huge jamband (and WSP) fan I would give anything to attend Bonnaroo 2002 - that lineup was flat out sick and won't ever be topped IMO. Sadly though I was only 16 at the time and there's no way in hell my mom would have let me go...even if I did find out about it in time. My 1st Bonnaroo was 2005 and I'm sure like many others, your first time feels like you found something magical. I'm sure that's what everyone at the inaugural Bonnaroo felt x10! Can't even begin to imagine how awesome that year was...
