I'll be missing Kendrick by not being able to make it to Roo this year, and I'm pretty bummed about it. Are they definitely not doing day passes this year? I would love to snag one for his day and would be elated if Phantogram and/or Misterwives ended up on his day too.

Not a fan of this lineup at all. I went in 2012 and it was phenomenal(even with Avicii) and the 2013 lineup was fantastic as well, but damn did they drop the ball in 2014 and now this. its unfortunate it will sell out anyway because of the mainstream acts, but they are definitely getting greedy IMO asking for $175 a ticket. Shame too because it thought it was not only a great idea for a fest but also the Merriweather is a fantastic venue!

175 really is pretty ridiculous for that lineup. Especially considering Calvin is one of the top two....

Yeaahhh....this is pretty underwhelming. I was expecting AT LEAST one more big or semi big name, but whatever. I'll be going mostly bc I'm 30 mins away and bc of Kendrick. Not happy about that price though...

And the Pavilion pass says: "General Admission access for both days of the sweetlife festival, and GA access to the covered unassigned seats in the pavilion and standing room area in front of the stage for both days (5/30 and 5/31) of the sweetlife festival"
Is there a difference between "the pit in from of the main stage" and "standing room area in front of the stage"?
Has anyone done VIP before? Is it worth it? (hefty price)

There's a decent size standing room pit in the front of Merriweather. Usually for GA events like this people just make a long line and are let in as people leave the pit. The treefort thing is behind and to the left of the stage (it's also the handicap access), and I assume VIP will have priority access from there into the pit.

When I went two years ago their was just one pit right in front of the stage; and the GA Pavillion ticket allowed access to it. They may have made changes; but I would just go with GA Pavillion if I were you. The treehouse stage is on an incline; so no matter where you are you'll have a good spot.

I went last year. They section off the outermost pavilion seats for VIP - so you can walk right down to be really close sidestage. If you're a general ticket holder you wait in this insane line (per artist) and they walk you down to the pit between shows. I'm not sure if they flush the pit between shows or if they just let VIP stay.

I can only go Sunday so I bought a ticket for that, wish I could see Kendrick. It was like $136 with fees for the Pavilion/pit ticket. God I hope I didn't spend that much money to not even be able to get close up. I also hate lines.... but I couldn't justify $200+ for a one day show with this lineup.

They really kept to schedule and bands started exactly on time, so more than once we were running between stages hearing the next band start. If you just wanted to post up early in the Pavilion, I'm sure you could get a good spot all day long.

Ugh that sounds brutal. Not sure why they wouldn't just have pit tickets separate like most other events/concerts do. I guess they want people to pony up for VIP. I guess I'll just have to wing it and hope for the best.
To be fair, the crowd at the year I went to FreeFest was one of the worst crowds that I have ever experienced at any place ever, so the apathy isn't something that is exclusive to 2015 or to this particular festival. I did want to quote his comment on Calvin Harris which is the kind of thing to earn undying devotion from Phyre Fest, "And for more than an hour, kids jumped up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down to the most boring music in the world. “SWEEEEETLIFE!” Harris roared during the sonic dissolves, not unlike how a young Arnold Schwarzenegger might. This was a 75-minute reminder that mediocrity actually steals your life from you."

Richards really overplayed his hand here, making this about the "decline of the American music festival," rather than just focusing on the issues with this event. As he said, c'mon, when the truth hurts, don't try to bend it: This is a top-40 music festival held in the suburbs and run by a salad company.
First, I'm getting sick of this ageist nonsense of ripping on millennials and their "selfies" and their "fashion." Kids have ALWAYS been obnoxious, they are not a new or different obnoxious now. I remember when I was that idiot kid taking selfies with a disposable camera and running around Pine Knob doing god knows what instead of watching whatever show I was there for.
Second, spending all those column inches bagging on kids but only once mentioning the price misses the mark. This fest costs as much per day as premium fests like Governor’s Ball and Lollapalooza, but the product, while decent, is ultimately not worth it (reminds me of a certain salad company). Maybe he wouldn’t have been so annoyed by all the millennials if a few more working stiffs could afford to attend this thing.
Bagging on booking Billy Idol also missed the mark. To me, Billy Idol was the most interesting pick on a lineup of what was otherwise a spin-class soundtrack. “Mony Mony” may not be the greatest thing in the world, but at least the promoters were actually going for something here.
Finally, others will disagree, but the shots at Vic Mensa and Kendrick rubbed me the wrong way. So what if Vic Mensa is just making positive, feel-good music? The stuff that guys like him are doing right now is pretty interesting to me precisely because it’s not about anything. And while Kendrick only playing one track off TPAB is inexplicable/inexcusable, bringing that second fan on stage who completely bodied mAAd city, to me, builds the kind of community feeling at an event that Richards spent the whole article claiming didn’t exist. It’s got this whole “we are the future of music” vibe to it that I think is great.

The disconnect between your younger self and present self can be pretty extreme at times. I was an idiot when I was younger. It's easy for me to see that now. Anyone who tells you different is lying or hasn't grown as a person since their junior year of high school. I have years of experience and practice that would allow me to better handle an number of situations from my youth if I was allowed to do it all over. Those skills simply weren't available to me at that time which is what people have a hard time remembering. They base their expectations of the behavior of the kids based on what abilities they themselves didn't have until much later in life. Is it annoying? Sure but you have to come to terms with that being where they are at 15 or 20 which is exactly where you were at the same age.

I remember assholes talking all through shows 10-15 years ago. Cell phones/cameras didn't have their ubiquitous nature back then either, so it was never a temptation for you.
There will always be dumb kids. Sometimes those dumb kids grow up to be dumb adults, sometimes they grow up to be great members of society. They've always been there, it's just easier to recognize now that you're a little removed from it.

This guy looks at EDM the way a lot of mid thirties and forty year olds do, with disdain. I personally like Calvin Harris and I dont lump him with others as to me his stuff has a different sound. I love no mention of acts like St. Paul and the Broken Bones or Misterwives who are unique in sound. He chooses to mention Vance Joy and Phantogram as merely blips on the radar. Green Day and Punk acts and rock acts are the ones who say Fuck the system and the man, not Tove Lo. Also I'm sorry Kendrick Lamar as the greatest rapper of his generation?? Cmon man, Is he talented and is his flow genuine? Yes he is good but greatest of the generation? This guy just comes off as a 40 year old who hates today's youth and today's youths music. To suggest people paid near $250 to just stand around and take pictures is ridiculous! Music festivals are a collection of music and fans who are there for an experience. If millennials or anyone else wants to take pictures or drink or skip an act to nap or anything like that, that is their experience. I feel like this after reading it
