Should Oshega be counted since it is a Canadian fest? Awesome fest, but I wouldn't put them in the ranking unless you put an asterisk next to it.
Bah. Begone with your pro-'Murica snobbery!
Montreal is only a 5-hour drive from Boston, probably not that much more from NYC. It's more accessible to most than, say, Beale St.
You do realize that I live in NY, right? I have a lot of love for Canada. I have lived near that border a couple times and be enough there. Great people and culture. Anyways, it is still a different country where you need a passport or special ID to go there. It's not hard to obtain one(unless you have a criminal record), but a slight inconvenience, but it is good to have just in case.

Thanks for the passport lesson but why again should we be putting asterisks next to Canadian festivals?

Because it is Canadian. Just thought about Europe and all of the festivals in different countries. We just label them as European festivals instead of individual fests in different countries. I suppose we can do the same with North America, I just wouldn't think of putting them in the mix.

I do indeed! Hence why you were once Dirty Jerzee, then Ol' Dirty Brooklyn, and now LIGuy AKA the Dirty Long Island Sound.
As for not including Montreal festivals... meh. From down here, it's basically all just 'Murica. I see your point, but it's also not like driving to Lollapalooza Chile or whatever. Plus I sometimes tend to assume everyone has a passport lying around.

I am impressed you know me, but you missed one screen name And the Long Island Sound isn't that dirty, just a little murky. Lol I do want to hit one of the festivals in Canada one of these days. How are the temps out there in August?

people are gonna hop on me for this, but by my personal opinion... Lolla Roo Outside Lands Osheaga Firefly Coachella Shakey Knees Hangout Bottlerock Bunbury Gov Ball From the videos I've seen online, drake is horrible live, thats why i have coachella and ball so low, i would rank shakey knees slightly higher if it had some EDM or rap, even though i understand its not that type of fest. But overall i think Lolla and Roo whipped the floor with everyone. Ill most likely be attending FF and Bunbury because of how close they are to me, hoping FF can do a slightly better job next year, especially with delivery. I Tried to base this not so much off of my opinion, but more off of an average festival goer who's into all genres.
1. Lollapalooza 2. Osheaga (not big on their headliners but they have a solid undercard) 3. Shaky Knees 4. Coachella 5. Governor's Ball 6. Bonnaroo 7. Firefly 8. Hangout
A lot of fests I left out but I haven't really looked at their lineups much.
Even though I'm not intending to include festivals outside North America I felt I had to include Glastonbury. See OP for my updated rankings.
Glastonbury should be awesome.
Amusing that Jazzfest isn't on anyone's list but mine although the Who will win (or should win) the madness game. I stand by it easily being #1 lineup for the shear volume of quality talent and the best night shows of about all other festivals combined. www.jazzfestgrids.com. Show me more late night music than that in anyone's 5 favorite festivals and I'll agree to argue the point.

JazzFest typically looks awesome but once you consider it's spread over two weekends it's easier to understand why it looks so well rounded out. Two other issues I have with JazzFest is the fact that the whole thing comes to a close at 7 PM each day and also the way they schedule all the biggest performers are crammed into the final 2-3 hours each day and headliners don't play unopposed. The late night stuff you refer to isn't part of your festival ticket so I don't directly factor into the rankings.

Understood it's actually my least favorite of the 3 pay festivals I go to in the city by a long way. Granted, their food is probably the best festival food on the planet, so they get their due for that. But the musical talent level far beyond rock, hip hop edm etc is there. The 7 days don't usually feature many repeats though some local acts might be found doubled up somewhere on the lineup (not 100% sure). But there is a reason it ends at 7, and that's because this is a 24 hour city, and Jazzfest tends to draw a much older crowd than newer, big festivals. You need time to recharge for night and overnight shows. I think it's an irrelevant point to say that night shows don't come with your ticket. Most fests don't give you that option either unless you do vip or super vip or unless you are at a camp fest that rolls til dawn like a Bonnaroo or Wakarusa. That all being said, the collection of musical talent in town those 10 days is unparalleled. The number of super jams and 1 time collaborations spanning race, age, gender and musical style is not duplicated anywhere. So I hear the reasons for the exclusions, and I respect them. But I think it's pretty apparent that despite my personal misgivings with Jazzfest, it's got the most music both as part of the festival and the surrounding night and overnight shows.

Absolutely understand what you are are saying. One of the biggest highlights when I went in 2010 was partying in the quarter after the music day was done. That was before I even knew there were after shows. That revelation came one morning while looking through a free local magazine and skimming a huge list of shows going on that week. I couldn't believe my eyes to discover Patti Smith was doing Tipitina's that very night and it was even more ecstatic to learn that it wasn't even sold out. Then Peter Buck and Michael Stipe joined her as surprise guests for a couple songs during the show and I fricken lost my mind.

I would lose my mind if Stipe randomly came on during a show I was at
It has got written off as "Sir Paul and a bunch crap" but it's not that bad. It's cheese in a sense, not that unique. It's not awful though.
Coachella has my vote for the best lineup, which seems to be the trend lately. It and MMJ One Big Holiday are the only two festivals that I would commit to financially without knowing the lineup. Little ahead of myself, but I'm planning on Coachella 17 and MMJ One Big Holiday 18.
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief

i don't know where to rank festival D'ete de quebec, it deserves mad points for being the only fest to book the rolling stones in a long time, and also had foo fighters, boston, doobie brothers, deep purple, and a decent undercard after that. but the second line is the ugliest thing in existence. nickelback, keith urban, and iggy azalea.
