Kid at work is from Louisiana. I asked him to tell me I was crazy for thinking my friend and cousin should leave. He just stared at me and said "No. they should get the fuck out."
Then he told me about how his family's home got broken in half by a tree during Katrina. So I'm not crazy, they're crazy.
If I was in Florida, Id more than likely be bailing. Thing that sucks is it's going to be too expensive for most families to do so. Floridians are going to have to travel a long way to avoid it.
I took a glance at Google Maps traffic. 75 looks jammed from Wildwood all the way into Georgia. Probably 200 miles total. 95 looks mostly clear, oddly enough.
Wonder if/when they'll turn 75, 95, and the Turnpike all lanes northbound only.
Couple things...heyyitskait your friends are the crazy ones not you. The problem with Florida is there are basically only two main thoroughfares in and out of the state, which means there is going to be hella traffic. It is one of the excuses my brother and my mom used. The other problem is, if you leave too late, depending on where you are, you might not make it out in time. Also, if that hurricane goes directly up the middle of Florida, everyone is fucked.
I am so worried about everyone in Florida and I just want y'all to stay safe. I am so fucking over hurricane season, it has been a long time since we have had so many severe storms that actually impact the US. So not fun.
Last few runs slash NHC consensus tracks has the center going straight up the middle of Florida. Maybe landfall on the southwest corner, then drifts along or to the east of 75.
The entire state (except maybe the Panhandle) is pretty much screwed by this. The Atlantic side, being on the eastern side, will probably get the worst of it.

My mom just posted a photo of her backyard with the caption: Hurricane? I responded that since she is being crazy and not leaving, could she at least pick up the stuff in her yard that will become projectiles. She is really not taking this seriously and it is pissing me the fuck off. Oh and one more person in South Florida that posts a photo about where they are and how they aren't leaving might make me blow my top. I somehow contained myself from cursing out my mom already.
Anyone in South Florida that hasn't gotten out yet is fucking stupid and are putting themselves at risk.
Been talking to my friend in Naples all day. She still has power somehow. The eye is arriving any minute now.
Haven't heard from my cousin in Fort Lauderdale since 10am. He's probably lost power, but it's not their first rodeo so we're not too worried.
Have you heard from either since this post?
Yes. My friend is ok, just bored out of her mind. They lost power shortly after eye hit. Everyone is safe though. They're just sitting in darkness until someone comes to take down their shutters. I'm sure her boyfriend is outside taking a look around. He went outside while the eye was hitting them.
Heard from my cousin around 4:30pm yesterday. They were ok. Just sent us a video of the yard and said things were getting "pretty crazy." Which to me looked like complete insanity but to him he was clearly having a blast because he was laughing like a crazy person in the background.
What is with guys going outside during dangerous weather events?
Looks like there's a hurricane heading to the Gulf coast again. Current track has it going toward Louisiana, but as a cat 1.
And our pumps are still not working. I was actually coming to this thread to bitch about the fact that a low grade hurricane is heading our way. On Monday my house was the closest to flooding ever due to the pumps not working and now we are going to have to worry about even more water. I might get sandbags for the back porch just in case. So over all this fucking rain.

On a lighter note, conversations with my father:
I have literally no fucking clue how those pumps aren't full speed ahead by now. I just wonder what it is they're made out of that takes so long to be repaired, replaced, etc. At the rate that they are being replaced, you would think they were made by Nintendo. Is it a money thing? Political thing? Or can they just not physically get them quick enough?
I've thought all summer about how all it would take to wipe New Orleans out for good is a Category 3 that lingers. If the city floods for real again, people aren't coming back. My only hope for this storm is that it stays at like a 1 or 2, the eye stays to the east of us, and it's over in a day or less.
If my house had 3 or 4 level winds, I'm afraid it just falls over. My foundation, and many people's foundations, is not strong at all. Our ground sinks and shifts constantly (hence all the pot holes). My neighborhood will probably flood if we get more than 5 inches in a day.

They are super old and it is a money, political, corruption and laziness thing. There was money allocated after Katrina from FEMA that they either spent on something else or that they are sitting on. They have said that to fix/replace it would cost billions of dollars and blah, blah, blah. They don't care about us here, they are too worried about lining their own pockets and doing the least amount of work as possible. The system is so broken here that it doesn't matter who is in charge, they get sucked into the corruption that is the NOLA government.

I'm We're on borrowed time.
Is Lakeview still nothing but craters? I dated a girl that lived off vet for a while and her neighborhoods streets would literally bottom out small cars.

Absolutely. Timely question, btw. I bottomed out near my house in Mid City (outskirts close to Lakeview) on Wednesday night going to a friend's house in Metairie. By the time I got there, my car was making some crazy noises. I had completely busted my transmission oil pan, like 3-4 inch gash in it. Put down $372 to fix it yesterday.

I knocked the front end of my jeep out of alignment driving down one of those streets one night. Those potholes are unbelievable around there, and super dangerous right after a rain and they're full of water. Unfamiliar people will run right into them. Even if they just tarred over them, it's better than nothing at this point. The city should be liable for damages to personal vehicles for not maintaining the roads. That is their job, after all. Hair plug's agenda should be pumps, potholes, then maybes some appeasement. And that's coming from a relatively liberal person that thinks confederate statues are tacky.
There's a thing going on in the Houston area where they'll repair any pothole within like, 48 hours or some shit now.

New Orleans is nothing but craters. Lakeview is bad, but most areas are bad. My mini van hit one on Desire Pkwy in the ninth ward before I bought my Fit and it blew out both tires and bent my tire axl. We have "Fix My Streets, I Pay Taxes" signs in front yards all over the city.

Billions my ass. The infastructure for the pumps is already there. The actual devices just need to be repaired/replaced from my understanding. And I dont think its just NOLA political corruption,as much as I think its just part of the state. With the amount of industry that lines Louisiana down I10 theres no reason that the entire state isnt in as good of shape across the board as Texas. Education is in absolute shambles, roads suck, local taxes blow, and the state blows. Being in a state thats not Louisiana, I feel like I was absolutely robbed of a good education.
And thats coming from someone that grew up in CenLA, went to college in Ruston, and lived in BR for 5 years. I love Louisiana. But I hate Louisiana politics.
And I thought Rhode Island was bad with the potholes and shit roads.
A lot of the issue is that roads are built on mud, and at some point Louisiana politicians figured out they could save a bunch of money and I'm sure line their own pockets with gravel that's seashell based from all the dredging done. I don't know that I've been anywhere else that you can pick out little remnants of white shell off the sides or roads.
