I wouldn't consider Alan Jackson new country. You'd have to lump Garth Brooks in that category, too. Alan's former keyboard player was a good friend of mine back in the day and I went to a number of shows for free. It was always a good time. I still like some of the country I used to listen to then.

Is Alan Jackson really modern country though? According to wiki he started in the 80s and got top new male vocalist in 1990.
Pop country. CMT stuff. Songs about Trucks. It's all the same.
Johnny Cash was real country.
Though I did always find the one of Alan Jackson's music video's to be funny as a kid. I have just been bombarded with pop country for years and years.

I actually read yesterday that he had said that. I love Jim James, but that comment really pissed me off. Today's mainstream country is certainly lazy, repetitive, unimaginative, dumbed-down, glorifies "country" stereotypes and just downright aweful. But racist? That's just ridiculous. That word gets thrown around so much nowadays that it's close to losing any meaning. There is most definitely enough racism in the world without trying to point it out where it doesn't exist.

Maybe it has to do with the use of the Confederate Flag which definitely has some associations with racism. He definitely is making a blanket statement about something that isn't true for everyone.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say that decorative use of the confederate flag feels a bit racist to me (as a person of color) but it is, of course, a sort of unfair blanket statement.

I don't keep up with the genre. Is the use of a confederate flag really a common thing? The stuff I've heard in passing, while dumb downed, didn't seem racist.
Also, I think Alan Jackson was considered one of the new traditionalist when he came out. Kind of an anti-Garth.
You can point out Hank Williams Jr using the confederate flag, but he is not modern country music. The stuff out of Nashville is a lot of pop leaning music and pretty generic. It is rare to have anything controversial.

That's stretching it. Not much into hip-hop, country, or EDM stuff...but there is exceptions for each genre.
I was upset when I first saw the tile of this thread. I knew Alan Jackson was playing within 45 mins of me recently, but I drove to Richmond and back this weekend, and didn't care enough to spend money to buy a ticket. It was on the day before this show though.

as a music lover, it's hard for me to understand why another so called music lover can hate certain types of music. They all Play off of each other. take bluegrass for example. 5 years ago most people hated bluegrass. Now its mixed in with almost all genres of music. IMO all music should be appreciated for what it is.
