Yeah, it's almost like the last few years haven't featured the consensus best superjams ever (Jim James and D'Angel0), or what many consider to be Jack White's best show ever, or rare festival appearances from the legendary Nick Cave during LN, or Paul McCartney, or Bjork, or Bobby Womack's last show. Now that Bonnaroo is Coachella East none of those things happen anymore.
None of the things you just mentioned are a festival rarity, and while both the superjams you mentioned were good, they certainly were not the "consensus" best unless people only started going in 2010. 2004 was certainly better, (and to my mind 2008 was as well), 2006 was the two front men from Phish with Phil Lesh, and 2007 was Ben Harper and Questlove doing Zeppelin with guests. Bonnaroo has moved to a more pop formulaic lineup from 2012 on, and this is just likely to continue to push them in that direction for good or bad. Certainly though there has been a decline in the art part of the festival, the truly unique acts like Ornette Coleman, Oysterhead, Steve Earle with Bonnie Rait, and the other really unique acts have been on the decline. These days we get very little that is truly unique, D'Angelo was, and so was the secret DJ Jazzy Jeff show, but there are not really many acts I can not see, or I could not have see prior to or after Bonnaroo, and almost none of the spur of the moment collaborations that used to be amazing.
You do have a good point. It seems these days all the spur of the moment collaborations only happen at Coachella O_o
Not thrilled about this, but we could get some serious headliners next year. I'm breaking my 8 year streak anyways; it won't hurt nearly as bad to miss next year too if LN turns Roo into total shit.

But seriously, this dud of a year aside, Bonnaroo has been consistently pulling rare and unique acts. Hell, even this year they got Atomic Bomb, which is gonna be dope. Anyone bringing the "you custie losers shoulda been there when it was still a jamband fest" shit just looks like an idiot. I know I sure as shit would rather repeat Bonnaroo 2013 than repeat 2003.
Let's see how well all the people who bitch about Spicy Pie like Domino's or Little Caesars. Of course, the "improved facilities" might be useful then.
I'm still gonna continue my Roo streak until I'm not feeling it anymore. The people make the festival. If they price us out or destroy the experience we will just find another festival.

I'll go from not eating Spicy Pie to not eating Domino's.
I'm worried. But I don't think anyone can say this is a good or bad thing quite yet.
As others have said Livenation could improve the grounds and bring better lineups.
However, I still remember a few years ago Livenation bought the Bamboozle festival here in NJ, drove it into the ground, and they haven't had another one in 3 years (despite initially saying they were just going to take a year off). They also bought The Wellmont Theatre near me not too long ago; and shows there have become alot loss frequent, lesser quality acts, and much higher ticket prices. The venue is a shell of its former self.
It's really too soon to tell the impact any of this will have.

and D'Angelo, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Slayer, Tears for Fears, Earth Wind and Fire (unique for festivals at least), The Very Best, etc. etc. etc.
Even on a weak year, Bonnaroo still got acts that no one else has. They do better than many give them credit for.

That is true but I would take '06-'09 over anything that has happened since. Those years had a great balance unique acts, a thriving art scene, headliners that were one offs not just more festival fodder, and they took a lot of risks i.e. Jazz Tent, Bela getting a stage to curate, Phish getting a LN What and headliner Sunday, MMJ getting free reign on the LN Which etc.... Since then things have progressively gotten safer, and tickets have gotten higher. There have been great moments since, but really not a great festival since then imo.
They tell us "Rock'n'roll is the devil's music." Well, let's say we know that rock is the devil's music, and we know that it is, for sure … At least he fuckin' jams! If it's a choice between eternal Hell and good tunes, and eternal Heaven and New Kids on the fuckin' Block … I'm gonna be surfin' on the lake of fire, rockin' out.
So, I found this list of artists on Live Nation's page...can't tell if this is just artists that they have done events for or if these artists have a deal with them.

If you click on all artists, that is an extensive list.
Yea, I have a feeling that this will be where a lot of headliner speculation will come from next year if this turns out to be the "list of 200+ artists" that they work with.

All those bands are touring consistently in the US however, and EW&F played Wanee a few weeks ago. Not the same as Radiohead, or Metaliica, or Oysterhead that were truly unique to the US that year. It is not the same as having John Paul Jones as a artist in residence who just dropped by sets to crank out a few songs, really the originality that drew me first to Bonnaroo has been lacking for awhile now.

They are definitely going to pull from other sources as well. Manchester Orchestra played Voodoo last year, the first year under LiveNation and they are not on that list. So IMO, that makes it obvious it isn't going to be JUST LiveNation artists. They will just push their artists, if they are touring, to Bonnaroo, one would think, but will need to still have others.

That's because when Bonnaroo first started it was a unique show for bands because festivals weren't as abundant as they are today. Now, playing a festival isn't unique anymore, it's just another show. That's not Roo's fault, that's just what it is now.

True that. I'm interested to see the quality of headliners next year and if this deal has any affect on it, though. I think in the end, this won't really change much of anything except that Bonnaroo might have a few more artist management connections.

What new large festivals have come onto the scene since 2008? The difference was that Bonnaroo used to make an effort to stand out, now they seem to make one to fit in.

I don't want permanent bathrooms. I don't want "bigger" line ups.
I want dirt and a lot of walking and questionable portos.
At least I still have my small festivals.
I think anyone who went to Coachella can attest to the beauty of the permanent bathrooms. It sucks having nature call at night and you're stuck in the porta pottie hell of oblivion.

There hasn't. It's still the big three. Bonnaroo. Coachella. ACL.
