I've been to the nearby falls at the nearby Old Stone Fort State Park. It's our yearly pre-roo Wednesday excursion. I always see people swimming - there is a series of falls and swimming holes beneath them, with Deliverance-like surrounding cliffs - but I don't trust the look of the water. This looks much more palatable to me.

The people who signed up for this likely did not miss a whole lot of swimming. A buddy and I got in mid afternoon Wednesday, and we took a personal excursion to the waterfall, having previously visited Old Stone Fort's waterfalls the prior three years. Rutledge Falls were much nicer, with seemingly cleaner, clearer water and an incredible visual of the huge falls themselves, but there were two potential negatives for a big excursion. One was the fact the walk down to the falls could be treacherous. My buddy fell and banged up his hand pretty good. If you weren't wearing the right shoes, too, it could be dangerous on the sharp rocks around the water. Second was the fact the water was freaking FREEZING. I walked across the creek and underneath the falls, and my feet quickly felt numb. I saw people wading up to their shins, but nobody jumped into the deep pools while I was there. One couple stood on a rock for like 10 minutes, seemingly trying to will themselves to jump down into the pool, but they finally gave up and moved away. I couldn't blame them. It's was frigid. Another woman kept trying to coax her dog to jump into the water and swim out to her - and I'm not lying, it just shivered and looked at her like she was dumb. I'll 100 percent go again next year and wade around because it instantly cools you down, but I don't know if I'll be jumping in and doing any extended swimming.
