What was the first year Bonnaroo really had scheduled music on Thursday?
This being something like my 12th Bonnaroo (never attended an Itchycoo) the early Bonnaroo's kind of glom together in a smile inducing memory with no regard for chronological order.
So as I recall it (and this could be completely wrong), gates used to not open until Thursday morning around 6, or at least that was what was posted on the website. I vaguely remember a friend calling me to tell me that because traffic was so backed up wednesday night, they opened the gates at like 9pm on wednesday. I believe that was the year that STS9 played an unscheduled show on thursday (might have been the next year, because I think they then moved the gate times to wednesday night). I was not at the show, so I have no personal recollection of this, but for some reason it is cemented in my head as true. After that year, they began scheduling acts on THursday. I want to say it was 2007....
2004 was my first year. The gates officially opened Thursday morning, but they opened them Wednesday night, maybe around 6 or 7. We were inside by 9. I don't think there was music Thursday. I remember being there a whole day just hanging out at the campsite before the music started.
Not sure about the first few years, though. I'm still trying to get my hands on those schedules/maps to add to Inforoo Archive.
Ok, was that the Dave Matthews year where they ended with a huge jam of ThankyaFalletinMeBeMiceElf? And if it was, then that was the first time I ever heard the buttscratcher yell. (for some reason I remember that being in the daytime, which doesnt line up with a headliner finish time...)
Ok, so now I am piecing this together... I guess I was wrong about there not being ANY music scheduled for thursday, and I think 2005 was the first year for Thursday music. According to my recollection of this secondhand rumor was that STS9 arrived early and was able to set up and put on a show that went pretty late night on thursday.
Is there anyone out there that can corroborate any of that?

It's unlikely that the infamous "Buttscrathaahhh!" began before 'Roo 2007 as the Family Guy episode it came from aired 6.May.2007.
2004 was my first Roo as well and after that it took me until 2011 to make it back to the farm again. There are many say that MTV's purchase of the fest was for the worst, I disagree. In 2004 they did not open the gates until Thurs AM. We hit traffic on the freeway around 6-7AM and waited in line about 8 hours. When we reached our site it was at the tree line which was insanely too far from Centeroo about a 45 minute walk at minimum. The grass was two feet high crawling with spiders and made it difficult to put up our tents. I have pictures of us sitting around a camp fire so those must have been allowed and I do not remember any music until Friday either. I also remember standing in a thunderstorm for hours with my feet sunk in mud and I was sleep/standing waiting for The Dead to come play. There wasn't any vendors setup dividing the What and Which Stage either so it was faster walking back and forth. Have made it back every year since 2011 and I have been thrilled with the changes plus how much more organized it is since MTV took over.

Dave Matthews was a headliner in 2005. He was in the 3rd slot behind Widespread Panic and Widespread Panic.
You're incorrect. Dave Matthews was a headliner in 2004 with The Dead and Trey Anastasio. Dave Matthews Band was a headliner in 2005, the first year with a full-blown Thursday schedule.
2004 was billed as Dave and Friends, because Trey played with him, cause otherwise I wouldn't have gone to the show because I hated Dave so much.
Then I had a great time at the show and wasn't sure why I hated Dave so much.
That Dave and friends show was pretty great, I thought. I was huge into DMB around then though. But it was a nice mix of Dave solo stuff plus good covers, and the end run of waste>everyday>bathtub gin with Dave and trey acoustic before the whole band came out to end on with sly stone was epic to my little brain

Agreed, really awesome show! I have the AUD around here somewhere, I should put it on.

Notes: The seeds for BARN69 were planted when our friends Andy and Meredith Freed who came to visit us in NYC last summer from Boston and brought us to the Citifield Dave Matthews Band show -- my first since the HUGE Central Park show years ago. While chatting with them I recalled attending and recording this Bonnaroo set and that it came out quite good. The show itself, while enjoyable, wasn't particularly memorable. Highlights include the "Solsbury Hill" Peter Gabriel cover, a killer version of The Band's "Up On Cripple Creek" with Trey on vocals, the acoustic duo segment near the end with Trey & Dave trading off verses on each-other's songs and a few of the songs from the Dave Matthews solo project "Some Devil" (though most of them were nothing to write home about). "Gravedigger" is a pretty good one, "Stay Or Leave" and "So Damn Lucky" also pass muster, but on the whole I find most of the songs on the album (and subsequently this show) to be pretty forgettable. One notable thing for Phish fans about this show is that there are 2 guitarists in the band, and Trey and Tim Reynolds couldn't be more different in their styles or the sound of their guitars, so it's interesting to hear the interplay between the two. Another interesting fact is that Tony Hall, the bassist in this band, has gone on to become one of the *2* bassists in Ivan Neville's awesome Dumpstaphunk. He gets a nice solo to begin the final song of the night.
Regardless, it's a pretty great sounding recording!

I think I actually bought the flac from livebonnaroo.com back when they still did that.
