I'm coming from CT so I find myself on I-81 for quite a while. Past two years the 'Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway" has perked my interest.
Anyone taken this route as opposed to I-81 for a scenic path rather than the quickest way? How long would it take to travel this way as opposed to just staying on 81?
it will be worth the drive, BUT see if you can check the weather first ... one time i went on it, it was foggy , and a two hour trip turned into , if i remember right, a 7 hour trip ... and there are few places you can get off if you change your mind .. but next to hwy1, and some road in NY, it is one of the great drives in the us .. cr****

awesome, this is definitely going to be taken into consideration for this years trek down. I was under the impression that it was a straight shot, all or nothing kind of deal, but now that I think about it, duh, of course you don't need to take it the entire way. Under clear skies, I'll see if the passengers/caravan? want to check it out. Thanks, karma to the both of ya's, after an hour of course.
Id recommend hitting it up on your way back through that way if it takes a little longer who cares...I live in the valley and I try to take as much advantage of the drive as possible...also some awesome hiking trails in the Blue Ridge
Old Rag is an awesome hike...we used to do it once a year in Boy Scouts and it was always a good time.....last time I went on my own accord the view from the top is truly beautiful

Indeed it is! There are also lots of spots on the way up with BEAUTIFUL views, espcially the top 1/3
