If you want to hang out, you've gotta take her out, cocaine If you want to get down, get down on the ground, cocaine She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie, Cocaine
"The road has become unbearable," he said. "It's become unapproachable, because it takes so long to get anywhere. It's hostile – everywhere: getting in and out of airports, traveling on planes and in cars." -Eric Clapton
That certainly sounds like a guy who wants to travel to a farm in the middle of Tennessee to play in the heat to a bunch of kids who are just hanging around because the molly from the earlier Macklemore show hasn't worn off yet.
I think he could do it as a one-off and be fine with it, but I do think his show needs an audience that's appreciative of what he's doing. He doesn't bring the hits the same way McCartney, Elton, or Billy Joel do. While I'd like to see Clapton, I just don't think Bonnaroo is the place for him. I'd much prefer Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Roger Waters, Springsteen, or plenty of other old white guys over him.
Clapton's saving grace would be his affinity for guests. I feel like there'd be a decent chance Derek Trucks, John Mayer, or Warren Haynes would show up for his set along with some other cool musicians

If he's going to do a one-off show, why make it Bonnaroo?
Re: his affinity for guests........ is Bonnaroo a place for random guests to show up during headliners? History says no.
I don't think he would make it Bonnaroo, nor should he. But it's not 100% out of the question. More like 90%.
And yeah I was thinking if any of those people were on the lineup on their own, there'd be a chance. But you are right that that kind of stuff doesn't really happen the amount we all hope it will.
How would the Roo crowd respond to this setlist? This is what he performed at Jazz Fest....
Somebody's Knocking (J.J. Cale cover) Key to the Highway (Charles Segar cover) Pretending Hoochie Coochie Man (Willie Dixon cover) Tell the Truth (Derek and the Dominos song) Driftin' Blues (Johnny Moore's Three Blazers cover) Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out(Jimmy Cox cover) Crazy Mama (J.J. Cale cover) Stones in My Passway (Robert Johnson cover) Layla (Derek and the Dominos song) How Long (Ace cover) (Paul Carrack on lead vocals) Gin House (Amen Corner cover) (Andy Fairweather Low on lead vocals) Cross Road Blues (Robert Johnson cover) Little Queen of Spades (Robert Johnson cover) Cocaine (J.J. Cale cover)
Encore: High Time We Went (Joe Cocker cover) (Paul Carrack on lead vocals)

I'd enjoy that. I loved that album of Robert Johnson covers he put out in the 00's. I thought him and his band sounded good on the Crossroads Guitar Fest DVDs when they cut loose on the blues. I'd never pay to see Clapton solo, but would definitely check him out as an unopposed headliner or up against an act I cared less about at a festival
I love blues guitar so damn much but I've never been able to get excited about Clapton. The man is like a robot. He's crazy talented but there's not much else going for him as far as originality or creativity.

I'd love to see Clapton on the farm. I saw him once after I got a free ticket and expected to see a washed up rock star whoring it on the nostalgia circuit. Instead I got my ass handed to me, it was amazing! Steve Gadd on drums! Now the that being said that happened 16 years ago. Things may have changed.
Funny story, I was at a Dawes & Friends aftershow of Newport Folk in 2013, and they started the show by saying "We lost a legend today, we'd like to play you a few of his songs as tribute". They start into "After midnight" and everyone was shocked, going "oh no, Eric Clapton has died!", until they realized it was actually a JJ Cale song.

Just throwin this out there...there have been a number of guests during headliner sets, all the way from Dottie People and that huge orchestra with Panic to Nas with the Beastie Boys to Stevie Nicks with Tom Petty to those two cello dudes with Elton John. I don't want Eric Clapton to play, though. Any of those that you mentioned would be better for my tastes.

One of those shows that would be like Springsteen's show (little known songs played throughout) but UNLIKE the Boss who has tons of energy and just can pull off that kinda show, Clapton really cannot. The idea that he doesn't play his hits will set a lot of people off I do believe.
I agree on the fact that he is great but probably not for Bonnaroo.
