I thought we needed a thread dedicated to Inforooster travels and recommendations for places to see, things to do, and restaurant recommendations.
I'll start: The boyfriend and I planning a two week trip to Europe next summer. We plan on starting in Strasbourg, France for two or three days, then heading to Belgium for a week or so to see friends, then finishing up in Amsterdam for two or three days. I'm looking for recommendations on the best areas to stay in Amsterdam and Strasbourg. I think we're going to go the AirBnB route for lodging, but I'm not familiar with the towns so I don't know what areas are good and what areas are sketchy. Also, if you have food recommendations for either city, bring em on!

Katy Mae might be able to give you some recommendations for Amsterdam.
If any Inforoosters are heading Down Under, I'd be more than happy to offer some recommendations for my favourite haunts around Sydney and surrounds (Melbourne, too). Hard to believe, I know, but there's a lot more to this city than just the Harbour Bridge & Opera House and Bondi Beach!
Thinking of going somewhere warm in late January. Was thinking San Diego or San Juan, but it may be kinda pricey for my budget. GF is probably thinking Florida (Orlando), since its closer and cheaper.

If I recall correctly late January is one of the cheapest times to go to Disney, if you are into that sort of thing. On property resorts are much cheaper and crowds are much smaller. I know an embarrassing amount about Disney World if you want any additional guidance.

This is true. My ex girlfriend and I got 3 day passes in 2014 in early February for $99. It'll allow you to visit one park a day. Dirt cheap, especially compared to summer where prices jump to well over $100 a day.

When it comes to Amsterdam, I've found it's actually cheaper to get a hotel than an airbnb. It's a city I wouldn't recommend trying to find really nice lodging because you're only going to be using it to sleep, ideally. If you're only planning on being there for a few days, I would stay either in the central canal ring area, or in the museum quarter right outside of the ring. Amsterdam has such a fantastic tram/bus system that you can get from one part of the city to another quickly, easily, and without confusion. Also, everything you're going to want to do is walking distance, and the land is flat. You can also rent a bicycle, EVERYONE is on bikes, they're more dangerous than cars in the city so be careful and look for them, I'm being completely serious cause you will get creamed if you don't.
^the circle area is the Museum Quarter, and the outlined part is the central area
When you arrive at the airport you have a couple of options of getting to your hotel. Underneath the airport there is a train that brings you directly to Centraal Station, which is in the center of town. You can take a tram or bus to your hotel, this is a good option if you're staying in the city center. There is also the Airport Express Bus (http://www.bus197.nl/), which takes you from the airport to Centraal Station also. If you stay in the my preferred neighborhood of the museum quarter, the bus is a very good option because it makes stops along the way to Centraal, and one of them is right in that neighborhood and close to all the hotels.
You must go to an Indonesian restaurant while you're there and get rijsttafel, it's like Indonesian tapas. You get a big bowl of awesome rice, and 15-20 small dishes that everyone shares. For drunk food, bitterballen is the way to go. They're deep fried crispy balls of awesome.
I'm not sure if you or the man smoke, but I can give some coffeeshop recommendations as well, if that's something you're planning on checking out.
If there's anything else, please ask, I'm going back in less than a month so talking about the city is just getting me even more excited!

Katy has Amsterdamn covered, so listen to her over me. I've stayed in the central canal ring and the museum quarter. The museum quarter is were it's at. It's much more relaxing(way less sketchy) and lodging isn't all that expensive, if memory serves.
This is were I stayed. Nothing fancy but it's in a good location, the staff was nice and it was clean. www.europa92.nl/amsterdam/english/
I've only taken a day trip to Strasbourg. I'd recommend doing the most touristy thing imaginable and visiting Strasbourg Cathedral. The astronomical clock is amazing, but the church as a whole is magnificent and well worth the time. I found the tours of the European Parliament quite boring and uninformative but that was over a decade ago. So unless you are really into politics, you might find your time best spent elsewhere in the city.
Monie and I will be in Houston for Day for Night Festival in a couple months; does anyone have any suggestions of what to see and do when we're not festying?
Also, there's been talk of a family vacation to Bali in 2016 or 2017. Has anybody here been? It's probably a longshot given geography, but I figure there's no harm in asking.

I can't stress enough how I much I agree with you. You get so much more bang for your buck in the Museum Quarter, not to mention much better sleep.
I will check out the museum ring area! Plans have now sloghtly changed and it looks like we'll be going to at least one day of Rock Wertcher so the boyfriend can see Rammstein. It's the least I can do if he's going to have to visit the Anne Frank house.

If you aren't aware of it yet, check out groupon getaways. They often have trips with airfare to the Dominican and Mexico and other warm places for good prices.

My little brother and his girlfriend just got back from a trip to the Dominican that they got through Groupon. I think they enjoyed it very much.

We don't have passports. How long would it take to get one?

I seen Rammstein a few years ago and was a good show. Very elaborate stage setup, not sure if a fest show will bring the full experience.

It depends. I would give it 3 months but you could always have it sooner. This is a good time of year to apply though, it's the least busiest season. I had mine in a month when I applied in Nov 2012.
Las Vegas is nice in late January, but I'm not sure I would call it warm necessarily, especially at night. Regardless, if you decide to come here, I can give you some recommendations.

I strongly recommend a boat tour of the canals in Amsterdam. And the Van Goh Museum. You can pass on the Heineken brewery.

yep. G and I did a Groupon thing for our honeymoon to Jamaica and it was amazing.

Heading to Dallas for the College Football Playoff later this week. We have never been and are looking for some good places to eat and drink. Any suggestions?

I just got back from Cambodia. Angkor Wat was the most incredible thing I've ever experienced and it should be on everyone's bucket-list. No idea how it isn't one of the 7 wonders.

I have a long list of places I want to visit before I die, Angkor Wat is somewhere in the top 10 worldwide. I'm so jealous yet happy that you made it there! Hope you took a ton of pictures.
turns out i have a full week of vacation left from this year that i have to use before march. my bf and i are planning on taking a long weekend trip during his spring break, and spending a few days in philly and nyc. we're going to try to go to some museums, but i would love recommendations for things we have to do in both cities (like visiting Jaz!). also, food suggestions! i'm vegetarian, but he eats everything.
