Yea, just posted this in the Gov Ball thread. Wonder if there will be a new petition to sign?
The next battle of the bands could be in Queens.
New York’s Madison Square Garden is seeking permission from the city to put on a major outdoor music festival in Queens next June, The Post has learned.
The move ratchets up its East Coast/West Coast rivalry with Los Angeles-based AEG, the live-events producer behind the popular Coachella festival in California.
AEG, which counts former MSG executive Jay Marciano as chairman of its AEG Live division, is also petitioning the city to stage a music festival in Queens around the same time.
Both are said to be eyeing Flushing Meadows Corona Park as the site for their 2016 festivals.
MSG is expected to confirm details of its event this week, but sources said it will celebrate quintessential New York with food and entertainment as well as music.
MSG, run by Executive Chairman James Dolan, counts music impresario Irving Azoff as a key ally in lining up top acts.
Azoff, who formed a live-events partnership with Dolan, called Azoff MSG Entertainment, manages talent including Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and The Eagles.
“There’s no one as committed to, or more capable of, creating a world-class festival than we are,” David O’Connor, president and CEO of MSG, said in a statement to The Post.
MSG’s petition seeks to hold the festival on Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26, with a free Queens community celebration happening on Saturday, June 18.
AEG hasn’t announced its plans or dates, but is said to be interested in staging an East Coast version of Coachella.
Its move onto New York turf has drawn criticism from the independent organizers of the Governors Ball on nearby Randall’s Island, which also happens in June.
ah, you can delete this post if you want. It probably doesn't need it's own thread now that I think about it.
Nah, might as well leave this open if the festival happens. Will need a place to discuss it. I just meant that I just saw the news and posted it. Will be interesting to see what happens.
